Soil Gas Survey Results Supporting Groundwater Correction Action Plan (GCAP) Development for the Moab Site

A soil gas survey was performed at the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site during the week of November 6, 2023. Soil gas surveys are used to characterize residual subsurface sources of volatile contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds, as well as contaminants that generate a surrogate indicator gas or otherwise influence soil gas composition. The primary objective of the Moab soil gas survey was to confirm, identify, quantify, and refine secondary contaminant source area locations for uranium and ammonium/ammonia (NH 4 + /NH 3 ) in the vadose zone and shallow groundwater. The overarching goal was to provide information to assist in developing the technical basis for the Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Specifically, the soil gas data will support the deployment of source control technologies; e.g., where supplementary capping, removal actions, or amendments might be beneficial.

Correct Compilation of Concurrent C Code

The CompCert compiler represents a landmark effort in program verification as both a piece of verified software and as a compiler for verified C programs. A key shortcoming of CompCert however is that it does not support multithreaded programs. Prior work to add threads to CompCert has either required major rewrites of parts of the proof or only works for well synchronized programs. The problem is that CompCert’s backward simulation derives from a forward simulation via the determinism of the semantics of intermediate representation languages. This makes the proofs in CompCert easier but also makes them incompatible with standard models of multithreading which are non-deterministic. Here we propose an alternate formulation of CompCert’s proof structure that parameterizes the existing single threaded semantics with nondeterministic behavior generated at the multithreading level. While this is an old trick where program equivalence is concerned, performing it in the context of CompCert is quite subtle. Our approach allows for expressive concurrent semantics and does not require major proof rewrites but still results in a global backward simulation for multithreaded programs.

SAIL Radar b1 Data Processing: Corrections, Calibrations, and Processing Report

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility deployed the second ARM Mobile Facility (AMF2) near Crested Butte, Colorado for the Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) campaign. The SAIL campaign occurred from September 1, 2021, to June 15 2023. To study the water cycle in the East River Watershed, ARM deployed a vertically pointing Ka-band ARM Zenith radar (KAZR) and a scanning X-band precipitation radar managed by Colorado State University (CSU XPRECIP), as shown in Figure 1.

Model-form Error Correction using Universal Differential Equations for an Agent-Based Model of Infectious Disease

This report demonstrates universal differential equations (UDEs) as an approach to bridge the gap between ordinary differential equations (ODE) models and agent-based models (ABMs). Using UDE models as surrogates for ABMs allows us to preserve the foundational ODE that represents global disease dynamics while coupling it with a neural network model to approximate functions for the local behaviors of the ABM.

EPCAPE Radar b1 Data Processing: Corrections, Calibrations, and Processing Report

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility recently deployed its First ARM Mobile Facility (AMF1) to La Jolla, California as part of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE) campaign. Some of the goals behind EPCAPE were to characterize the diurnal and seasonal cycles of stratocumulus clouds and to investigate the cloud-aerosol-radiation interactions and feedbacks in the area. The deployment of the AMF1 for a full year from 15 February 2023 to 14 February 2024 aided in addressing these scientific questions. While AMF1 collected data year-round, enhanced measurements were taken during two intensive operational periods (IOPs). The first IOP occurred from April to June and focused on the chemistry of low clouds (EPCAPE_Chem), while the second IOP occurred from July to September and was focused on the radiation of high clouds (EPCAPE_Radiation). Several cloud radars were deployed with AMF1 to collect valuable data on cloud properties that will help users address key science objectives. As in past ARM campaigns, a1-level radar data is extensively analyzed and calibration techniques are performed to generate b1-level data (Matthews et al. 2023, Feng et al. 2024). Radar data at the b1-level are of the highest quality and thus can be used to examine scientific questions. The status of the a1-level data and the a1-to-b1 process for the EPCAPE radars is subsequently detailed in this document.

Laser calibration system and lost muons correction in the g-2 experiment

The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab has the main goal to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_{µ}$ = ($g$ − 2)/2 to a precision of 0.14 parts per million (ppm), which means 4 times improvement in precision with respect to the final result from BNL: $a_{µ}$ (expt. BNL) = 11659208.0(6.3) × 10$^{−10}$ (0.54 ppm) In this report I summarize the work done at the $g$-2 experiment during my summer internship at Fermilab. In the first two weeks my first task has been to replace the NIM logic used in the Laser Calibration System with a new FPGA. Then, I was involved in the Lost Muons analysis studying both real data and MonteCarlo simulations.

Precision QED Corrections to the Neutron s Lifetime

The traditional Fermi function (long-distance radiative contribution) ansatz for nuclear beta decay describes enhanced perturbative effects in the limit of large nuclear charge $Z$ and/or small electron velocity $\beta$. We define and compute the quantum field theory object that replaces this ansatz for neutron beta decay, where neither of these limits hold.

CoURAGE KAZR b1 Processing: Corrections, Calibrations, and Processing Report

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility supports atmospheric and earth system research through a comprehensive network of fixed and mobile observatories. These facilities provide long-term and intensive campaign-based observations of clouds, aerosols, precipitation, radiation, and meteorological state variables. ARM observations are designed to improve the physical understanding and numerical representation of atmospheric processes in earth system models, with particular emphasis on cloud-radiation interactions and precipitation processes. The Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE) deploys one of the ARM Mobile Facilities (AMF) to the Mid-Atlantic region surrounding Baltimore, Maryland, for the period 1 December 2024 through 30 November 2025. This deployment focuses on characterizing atmospheric structure, cloud properties, and precipitation processes across strong land-use and surface heterogeneity gradients associated with urban, rural, and coastal (Chesapeake Bay) environments. The CoURAGE deployment complements the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC), a DOE Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (UIFL), by providing high-quality atmospheric observations needed to connect urban surface processes, emissions, and meteorology to cloud and precipitation responses. In addition to the central urban site, ancillary observing sites were deployed to rural Maryland northwest of Baltimore and to an island site in Chesapeake Bay. These measurements further complement a long-term atmospheric observatory operated in Beltsville, Maryland, by Howard University in collaboration with the Maryland Department of the Environment. Together, these assets form a four-node regional atmospheric observatory network representing Baltimore and its three primary surrounding environments—urban, rural, and coastal/bay. This coordinated observational strategy enables investigation of spatial gradients in boundary-layer structure, cloud occurrence, precipitation evolution, and aerosol-cloud interactions across complex surface regimes. Within this network, vertically pointing cloud radars play a critical role by providing continuous, high-resolution measurements of cloud and precipitation vertical structure.

Automating Orbit Correction In The Main Injector 8 GeV Line

The Main Injector 8 GeV line (MI8 line) transports beam from Fermilab s Booster accelerator to either the Booster Neutrino experiments (BNB), the Recycler or the Main Injector. Often the orbit of the beam through the MI8 line differs depending on the beam destination. The beam is collimated in the MI8 line, so increasing intensities and repetition rates make controlling orbits through the collimators a necessity. The current method of regulating the MI8 line orbit with DC corrector settings is insufficient. A system named MITUNE is being developed to sample and categorize all beams through the MI8 line and automatically calculate and apply proper dipole corrector ramps to maintain desired orbits for pulses to any destination.

Idiomatic Correctness-Checking via Julienne in Fortran 2023

This paper presents a unified approach to unit testing and runtime assertion checking using Fortran 2023. The paper describes the support for our approach in the Julienne framework. Julienne leverages recent Fortran standards to implement object-oriented design patterns, support testing parallel programs, and implement functional programming patterns in order to craft idioms inspired by natural-language expressions. The presented idioms employ novel operators to write expressions that evaluate to a test-diagnosis object encapsulating two components: (1) the test outcome or assertion outcome and (2) an automatically generated diagnostic string. Two other novel aspects of the approach include (1) the ability to enforce assertions inside pure procedures and (2) the ability to output rich diagnostic information inside pure procedures during error termination when assertions fail. The latter capability mitigates against a reason that Fortran programmers commonly cite for not writing pure procedures: difficulty obtaining useful program output inside pure procedures when debugging code. This paper demonstrates how the adoption of the proposed idioms leads naturally to a unifying theme across two otherwise disparate technologies: unit testing and runtime assertion checking. Finally, this paper describes the usage of the Julienne testing framework for writing unit tests and assertions in the Matcha high-performance computing application and the Fiats deep learning library.

Physi-sorption of H 2 on pure and boron-doped graphene monolayers: A dispersion-corrected DFT study

Carbon based materials are of interest as potential candidates for H 2 storage. Earlier work has been inconclusive on the effect of boron doping on the energy of H 2 binding. However, earlier work has been inconclusive on the definitive effect of boron doping on the energy of H 2 binding, i.e. isosteric heats of adsorption (Qst). In this work, we completed a systematic DFT study to evaluate this effect, and found that doping graphene with boron provides only minor enhancement in H 2 binding. More importantly, the presence of the electron deficient boron into a graphene ring introduces a defect, such as terminal hydrogen or distortion from planarity, which creates hydrogen adsorption sites with slightly increased Qst. The increase is from ~ 5 kJ/mol H 2 for the pure carbon matrix to ~6 - 7 kJ/mol for the boron doped system. The more strongly bond H 2 is located near the defect and shows little direct interaction with the boron. Most significant enhancement is found in systems where H 2 is confined between layers at a distance of about 7Å. In this case, the H 2 binding nearly doubles, to ~10 kJ/mol for both pure, undistorted graphene, and the 2% boron doped system, containing tetrahedral C atom distortion. Interestingly, at higher doping levels of boron, we found that the Qst decreases compared to the all carbon materials. These finding suggest that interplanar nanoconfinement may be more effective way to enhance H 2 binding than boron doping.
