Effect of continuous gamma-ray exposure on performance of learned tasks and effect of subsequent fractionated exposures on blood-forming tissue

Sixteen monkeys trained to perform continuous and discrete-avoidance and fixed-ratio tasks with visual and auditory cues were performance-tested before, during, and after 10-day gamma-ray exposures totaling 0, 500, 750, and 1000 rads. Approximately 14 months after the performance-test exposures, surviving animals were exposed to 100-rad gamma-ray fractions at 56-day intervals to observe injury and recovery patterns of blood-forming tissues. The fixed-ratio, food-reward task performance showed a transient decline in all dose groups within 24 hours of the start of gamma-ray exposure, followed by recovery to normal food-consumption levels within 48 to 72 hours. Avoidance tasks were performed successfully by all groups during the 10-day exposure, but reaction times of the two higher dose-rate groups in which animals received 3 and 4 rads per hour or total doses of 750 and 1000 rads, respectively, were somewhat slower.

Digital simulation of continuous error models with application to an instrument landing system error

A digital simulation of the continuous error of the localized beam of a conventional instrument landing system is discussed. The digital simulation was developed during the analysis of space shuttle navigation capabilities. A discrete mathematical model for use on a digital computer is described. The model generates an output random sequence which is equivalent, for simulation purposes, to the desired random process. The model is a system of difference equations driven by a zero-mean Gaussian random sequence.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Evaluation of storage methods, open circuit versus continuous trickle charge, Sonotone 3.5 ampere-hour sealed nickel-cadmium secondary spacecraft cells

Twenty-five cells were used in a five-year test to compare, after each successive one-year storage period, the discharge and charge characteristics of charged cells on open circuit versus that of cells on continuous trickle charge. The test procedure, instrumentation, and results are described. Based on the test results, the following recommendations were made: (1) If the user's purpose will allow a rejuvenation cycle or two after a long storage period, the open circuit regime will likely give slightly greater capacity. (2) If the user's purpose demands immediately available power following a long storage period, the trickle charge method of storage is definitely the regime to use.

Effect of 90-day continuous exposure to methylisobutylketone on dogs, monkeys and rats

Continuous exposure of rats, dogs and monkeys to 410 mg/cu M methylisobutylketone vapor (MIBK) was conducted to evaluate the provisional spacecraft exposure limit of 20 ppm established by the Space Science Board in 1968. The exposure, conducted in a simulated space cabin environment, did not produce any measurable changes in dogs or monkeys. Rats developed hyaline droplet nephrosis within 2 weeks of exposure which was reversible upon removal from the MIBK even after 90 days. The data obtained indicated that the 60-minute emergency exposure limit of 100 ppm and the 90- and 1000-day provisional limits as established by the Space Science Board contain a wide margin of safety.

Continuous animal exposure to dichloromethane

Continuous exposures of dogs, monkeys, rats and mice to 5000 ppm and 1000 ppm of dichloromethane vapor (CH2Cl2) produced severe toxic effects on dogs, rats and mice. Dogs died after 3 weeks exposure to 1000 ppm and after 6 weeks exposure to 5000 ppm. Thirty percent of the mice also succumbed during four weeks exposure to 5000 ppm CH2Cl2. Although rats survived 14 weeks exposure to 5000 ppm, they experienced subnormal weight gains. Significant gross and histopathological hepatic lesions were noted in all 3 species at death or experimental termination in 14 weeks. In addition, rats showed abnormal kidney histopathology. Fat stains disclosed mild fatty increase in monkey livers after 14 weeks exposure to 1000 ppm CH2Cl2.

Development of a continuous linear model of a d-c to d-c flyback converter.

The analytical design of the feedback circuit for a d-c flyback converter requires the formulation of a model defining the static and dynamic performance of the forward loop. This paper describes the steps which were taken to develop a linear continuous model of a typical flyback circuit. Although the method uses several approximations to simplify the work, the resulting model was found to duplicate the performance of the actual circuit very closely. The model makes it possible to design the feedback circuit using well known linear feedback techniques. The method is an extension of prior work in the modeling of pulse-width controlled circuits.

The Value of Continued Followup in a Preventive Medicine Program

Continued monitoring of hypertension and cholesterol levels in NASA employees by regularly scheduled medical examinations prevents an increase in employee disability and cardiovascular mortality rates. Adequate therapeutic control for younger hypertensive employees is demonstrated by records on mortality and heart diseases over a period of 28 months. It confirmed the importance of systolic blood pressure as diagnostic tool for the inherent risk factor. The prevalence of additional coronary risk factors among employees with hypercholesterolemia is considerably less than in employees with hypertension.

Continuous exposure of animals to methylisobutylketone

Continuous exposure of dogs, monkeys, mice, and rats to MIBK for two weeks and all animals except mice for 90 days resulted in measurable adverse effects only in the case of rats. Rat kidney weights and kidney to body weight ratios were significantly elevated after exposure to 410 mg/cu m for two weeks, and kidney and liver organ weights and organ to body weight ratios were elevated after exposure to 820 mg/cu m for two weeks and to 410 mg/cu m for 90 days.

Continuous dependence of fixed points of condensing maps

Many problems in analysis are concerned with the dependence upon parameters of fixed points of maps. For contraction mappings, criteria are relatively easy to obtain and have been known for some time. In the study of solutions of functional differential equations, more general results were needed. It is the purpose of this paper to give a rather general fixed-point theorem for condensing maps depending on a parameter, to prove continuous dependence and to indicate how many of the previous results are special cases.

Teleconferencing: Cost optimization of satellite and ground systems for continuing progressional education and medical services

A set of analytical capabilities that are needed to assess the role satellite communications technology will play in public and other services was developed. It is user oriented in that it starts from descriptions of user demand and develops the ability to estimate the cost of satisfying that demand with the lowest cost communications system. To ensure that the analysis could cope with the complexities of the real users, two services were chosen as examples, continuing professional education and medical services. Telecommunications costs are effected greatly by demographic factors, involving distribution of users in urban areas and distances between towns in rural regions. For this reason the analytical tools were exercised on sample locations. San Jose, California and Denver, Colorado were used to represent an urban area and the Rocky Mountain states were used to represent a rural region. In assessing the range of satellite system costs, two example coverage areas were considered, one appropriate to cover the contiguous forty-eight states, a second appropriate to cover about one-third that area.

Continuing development of the short-pulsed ablative space propulsion system.

Major advancements have been made in solid propellant pulsed plasma propulsion technology. A LES-6 microthruster has operated for 8900 hours in orbit. Millipound thrustors have been developed and tested at performance levels of as low as 112 watts/mlb. Efficiencies of up to 50% and specific impulse values up to 5000 sec have been measured. An improved microthrustor has operated at 207 watts/mlb continuously for 1440 hours. Correlations of design and performance data exist to allow thrustors to be built to meet a particular level of performance.

Buckling of continuously supported beams.

The buckling of infinite beams continuously supported by a semi-infinite elastic continuum is investigated. The buckling loads were determined when the beam rests on a two-dimensional elastic continuum and also when the foundation extends beyond the width of the beam. The effect of the outside foundation is shown by comparing the obtained buckling loads.

Using computers to analyze continuous data.

Dynamic field measurements often involve large quantities of continuous data, which must be analyzed and interpreted to obtain meaningful information. The processing can often be accomplished by tape-recording the data in analog form, performing off-line digitalization, and using the result as an input to statistical programs on a digital computer. A time series analysis was used to obtain power spectral density (PSD) curves to identify dominant frequencies. Representative PSD plots were obtained for STOL aircraft during cruise. Vibrational energy was clearly concentrated below 0.1 Hz, and was much higher in the vertical than in the lateral direction.

A guidance and navigation system for continuous low thrust vehicles

A midcourse guidance and navigation system for continuous low thrust vehicles is described. A set of orbit elements, known as the equinoctial elements, are selected as the state variables. The uncertainties are modelled statistically by random vector and stochastic processes. The motion of the vehicle and the measurements are described by nonlinear stochastic differential and difference equations respectively. A minimum time nominal trajectory is defined and the equation of motion and the measurement equation are linearized about this nominal trajectory. An exponential cost criterion is constructed and a linear feedback guidance law is derived to control the thrusting direction of the engine. Using this guidance law, the vehicle will fly in a trajectory neighboring the nominal trajectory. The extended Kalman filter is used for state estimation. Finally a short mission using this system is simulated. The results indicate that this system is very efficient for short missions.
