Considerations for accurately determining the maximum power output of solar cells

The most important single electrical parameter characterizing solar cell performance is Pm, the cell's maximum power output. In order to experimentally determine Pm it is necessary accurately to control both illumination and cell temperature during measurements. Two quite different measurement approaches can be used: an equilibrium method and a transient flash method. Both techniques are discussed in the paper in detail.

Considerations in the analysis of flight test maneuvers

This paper discusses the application of a maximum likelihood estimator to dynamic flight-test data. The information presented is based on the experience in the past twelve years at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center of estimating stability and control derivatives from over 3,000 maneuvers from 32 aircraft. The overall approach to the analysis of dynamic flight-test data is discussed. Detailed requirements for data and instrumentation are discussed and several examples of the types of problems that may be encountered are presented.

Manned remote work station - Safety and rescue considerations

It is noted that due to restrictions of payload and volume limitations of current and projected launch systems, space construction of ultralarge space structures is essential. The present paper discusses the concepts of a key piece of construction equipment needed to support assembly of such large structures. Attention is given to the manned remote work station (MRWS), a universal crew cabin to be used as a construction cherry picker, space crane turret, work station on a construction base rail system, or a free flyer. Concepts and safety and rescue requirements for this spacecraft are delineated for early applications in support of Shuttle operations, as well as applications in support of a mid to late 1980's space construction base. Finally, applications in support of constructing and maintaining a solar power satellite system are covered.

Economic Analysis in the Pacific Northwest Land Resources Project: Theoretical Considerations and Preliminary Results

The Pacific Northwest Land Resources Inventory Demonstration Project i s an a ttempt to combine a whole spectrum of heterogeneous geographic, institutional and applications elements in a synergistic approach to the evaluation of remote sensing techniques. This diversity is the prime motivating factor behind a theoretical investigation of alternative economic analysis procedures. For a multitude of reasons--simplicity, ease of understanding, financial constraints and credibility, among others--cost-effectiveness emerges as the most practical tool for conducting such evaluation determinatIons in the Pacific Northwest. Preliminary findings in two water resource application areas suggest, in conformity with most published studies, that Lands at-aided data collection methods enjoy substantial cost advantages over alternative techniques. The pntential for sensitivity analysis based on cost/accuracy tradeoffs is considered on a theoretical plane in the absence of current accuracy figures concerning the Landsat-aided approach.

Dosimetric considerations in dental applications

The integration of the Lixiscope into dental procedures was studied and compared with conventional dental radiographic techniques. It was found that through the use of intraoral sealed sources in conjunction with microchannel plate technology, the Lixiscope gives increased diagnostic information with decreased radiation dosage.

Acoustic considerations of flight effects on jet noise suppressor nozzles

The inflight acoustic characteristics of high velocity jet noise suppressor nozzles for supersonic cruise aircraft were reviewed. The inflight effects at the peak noise level were discussed. Both single and inverted velocity profile multistream suppressor nozzles were considered. The importance of static spectral shape on the noise reduction due to inflight effects was stressed.

Control considerations for CCV fighters at high angles of attack

Wind tunnel and piloted simulation studies were conducted to investigate the potential high angle of attack control problems that are introduced by the use of the CCV concept of relaxed static pitch stability (RSS) on fighter aircraft. A conventional wing/aft tail design incorporating modest levels of static instability and a close-coupled canard/wing design exhibiting very high levels of instability was investigated. Two types of high angle of attack control problems can result from the use of RSS: pitch departures caused by coupling and deep stall trim. Avoidance of these problems requires that the airplane have sufficient nose-down pitch control at high angles of attack. The effectiveness of several pitch control configurations were investigated including conventional aft-mounted stabilators, wing-mounted elevators, canard-mounted flaps, and all-moveable canards. Varying the incidence of the canards was the most effective scheme; however, very large deflections may be required on highly unstable configurations to prevent pitch departure without sacrificing roll performance and to avoid deep stall trim. For situations where the high angle of attack pitch control requirement is not met, control laws were developed to inhibit the departure and to allow deep stall recovery. However, these schemes involve limiting airplane roll capability and therefore can potentially compromise maneuverability.

Photovoltaic power system reliability considerations

An example of how modern engineering and safety techniques can be used to assure the reliable and safe operation of photovoltaic power systems is presented. This particular application is for a solar cell power system demonstration project designed to provide electric power requirements for remote villages. The techniques utilized involve a definition of the power system natural and operating environment, use of design criteria and analysis techniques, an awareness of potential problems via the inherent reliability and FMEA methods, and use of fail-safe and planned spare parts engineering philosophy.

The LACIE data bases: Design considerations

The implementation of direct access storage devices for LACIE is discussed with emphasis on the storage and retrieval of image data. Topics covered include the definition of the problem, the solution methodology (design decisions), the initial operational structure, and the modifications which were incorporated. Some conclusions and projections of future problems to be solved are also presented.

Colorimetric consideration of transparencies for a typical LACIE scene

The production film converter used to produce LACIE imagery is described as well as schemes designed to provide the analyst with operational film products. Two of these products are discussed from the standpoint of color theory. Colorimetric terminology is defined and the mathematical calculations are given. Topics covered include (1) history of product 1 and 3 algorithm development; (2) colorimetric assumptions for product 1 and 3 algorithms; (3) qualitative results from a colorimetric analysis of a typical LACIE scene; and (4) image-to-image color stability.

Design considerations for attaining 200-knot test velocities at the aircraft landing loads and traction facility

Design studies are presented which consider the important parameters in providing 200 knot test velocities at the landing loads and traction facility. Two major components of this facility, the hydraulic jet catapult and the test carriage structure, are considered. Suitable factors are determined to correlate analytical data for characteristics of the hydraulic jet catapult with data measured from the existing catapult system. The resulting equations are used to calculate test velocities for a range of jet nozzle diameters and carriage masses with both the current 122 m and an increased 183 m catapult stroke. Using the catapult characteristics, a target design point is selected and a carriage structure is sized to meet the target point strength requirements.

Design considerations for attaining 250-knot test velocities at the aircraft landing dynamics facility

Preliminary design studies are presented which consider the important parameters in providing 250 knot test velocities at the Aircraft Landing Dynamics Facility. Four major components of this facility are: the hydraulic jet catapult, the test carriage structure, the reaction turning bucket, and the wheels. Using the hydraulic-jet catapult characteristics, a target design point was selected and a carriage structure was sized to meet the required strength requirements. The preliminary design results indicate that to attain 250 knot test velocities for a given hydraulic jet catapult system, a carriage mass of 25,424 kg (56,000 lbm.) cannot be exceeded.

Spacecraft damping considerations in structural design

The role of damping in the prediction of spacecraft structural responses and loads, and in the structural design of spacecrafts is discussed. The methods used to incorporate damping in the structural analysis are summarized and some experiences and procedures relating to damping in recent spacecraft design are discussed. Methods for modal testing and the experimental determination of damping, the use of discrete dampers, and the estimation of payload response are studied. A collection of damping data for recent spacecraft and related hardware is provided in the appendix.

Some evolutionary considerations of Beta Cephei stars

The evolutionary aspects of massive population 1 stars were investigated. Semiconvection was treated in two different ways, and included mass loss both in the early as well as later spectra stages. The effect of rotation was taken into account and the time evolution of angular momentum of these models was studied. The effect of differential rotation due to the faster rotating interiors and slowed down surface layers are briefly described.
