Conference on In Situ Composites, 2nd, Bolton Landing, N.Y., September 2-5, 1975, Proceedings

The present collection of papers deals with advances in several areas of interest in in-situ composites. Major areas discussed include solidification and structural control, physical properties, mechanical behavior, stability, environmental response, and development of new metallic and ceramic systems. New evidence about directional solidification in terms of temperature gradients is presented along with solidification rates for successful formation of in-situ composite structures. Much is learned about the factors that control structure in directionally solidified eutectic alloys and the relationship of properties to structure, especially the change in properties as a function of operating environment. Less progress is achieved in the area of physical properties than in the area of mechanical properties. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Topics include a quantum-mechanical treatment of high-energy charged particles radiating in a homogeneous magnetic field, the solution and properties of the Dirac equation for magnetic fields of any strength up to 10 to the 13th power gauss, experimental difficulties encountered and overcome in generating megagauss fields, the effect of strong radiation damping for an ultrarelativistic charge in an external electromagnetic field, magnetic susceptibilities of nuclei and elementary particles, and Compton scattering in strong external electromagnetic fields. Other papers examine static uniform electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the vacuum in arbitrarily strong magnetic fields, quantum-mechanical processes in neutron stars, basic ideas of mean-field magnetohydrodynamics, helical MHD turbulence, relations between cosmic and laboratory plasma physics, and insights into the nature of magnetism provided by relativity and cosmology. Remarks by Dr. James C. Fletcher at Conference on Satellite Communication and Public Service

The present status of communications satellites, together with the future goals and technology developments in use of public service, is assessed. Improvements in design during the last decade considerably cut the cost of their development and launching, and the systems carry information to millions of people on earth. The space shuttles will change the rules in design and make it possible for communications satellites to have multiple frequencies operating at high power.
