CHARM-SYCL & IRIS: A Tool Chain for Performance Portability on Extremely Heterogeneous Systems

Performance portability is becoming crucial as high-performance computing systems become increasingly heterogeneous. We have many options for CPUs and accelerators (e.g., GPUs) but also for non-Von Neumann architectures such as field-programmable gate arrays. This paper presents the CHARM-SYCL unified programming environment for multiple accelerator types as a performance-portable programming environment. It uses the IRIS library developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as the back end accelerator runtime. IRIS has a high-performance scheduler to distribute tasks across accelerators. This design allows us to run an application from the same source on multiple systems with multiple configurations. We provide three types of portability with CHARM-SYCL: Portable Workflow, Compiler and Runtime Portability, and Application and Performance Portability. We implement a Monte Carlo simulation benchmark code on the CHARM-SYCL execution environment and demonstrate that our programming environment can accommodate extremely heterogeneous systems.

Cryo-EM structure of a photosystem I variant containing an unusual plastoquinone derivative in its electron transfer chain

Photosystem I (PS I) is a light-driven oxidoreductase responsible for converting photons into chemical bond energy. Its application for renewable energy was revolutionized by the creation of the MenB deletion (ΔmenB) variant in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, in which phylloquinone is replaced by plastoquinone-9 with a low binding affinity. This permits its exchange with exogenous quinones covalently coupled to dihydrogen catalysts that bind with high affinity, thereby converting PS I into a stable solar fuel catalyst. Here, we reveal the 2.03-Å-resolution cryo-EM structure of a recent MenB variant of PS I. The quinones and their binding environment are analyzed in the context of previous biophysical data, thereby enabling a protocol to solve future PS I hybrids and constructs from this genetically tractable cyanobacterium.

Multi-feedstock Supply Chain Optimization Model

This tool can be used to determine a least-cost feedstock mix from crop residue, energy crop and MSW to meet conversion specifications, while also identifying appropriate depot locations and size, given that depot can be co-located with the biorefinery or can be located in any counties in the biofinery’s supply shed.

Interplays In The Rare Earth Element Value Chain

An imbalance problem exists in the rare earth element (REE) market with cerium and lanthanum being more abundant and less valuable than REEs used in permanent magnets such as neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium. Research has been conducted on new applications for abundant REEs to improve mining economics. However, potential market impacts of these applications on individual REE commodities are unknown. A system dynamics model was built to investigate the impacts of a new aluminum-cerium (Al-Ce) alloy that can theoretically utilize three separate cerium forms: cerium carbonate, cerium oxide, or cerium metal. Cerium carbonate currently possesses the lowest price of the three available forms making it initially the most favorable choice. However, model results showed that cerium oxide could provide the best economics for future Al-Ce alloy deployment because its larger market size buffers major shocks to price.

Variable Chain Length Carboxylic Acids as Modifiers to Enhance the Antiviral Efficacy of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate.

Non-toxic disinfectants composed of readily available commodity chemicals are needed for immediate response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. One such area is the active research field for food-grade sanitization. Combinations of levulinic acid, a five-carbon ketocarboxylic acid, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, have been frequently described for antibacterial use on food contact surfaces. Levulinic acid has been identified as a renewable feedstock but is not presently in commodity production. Other carboxylic acids, such as acetic acid, may be equally usable and food-safe. Acidic and buffered solutions were highly effective, yielding no countable surviving organisms. The high efficacy of each acid may suggest that carboxylic acid sanitizers in general have potential use against viruses.

Patchy snapshots of nuclear chain reactions

Stochastic fluctuations of the neutron population within a nuclear reactor are typically prevented by operating the core at a sufficiently high power. This regime, where the evolution of the neutron density is essentially deterministic, is key for automatic protection and safety systems to safely detect unwanted power excursions during an accident, and to rapidly initiate a reactor trip procedure in case it is needed. Recent works, supported by numerical simulations, have however reported that, for large reactors, the branching nature of the fission reactions might induce strongly non-Poissonian patterns in the neutron spatial distribution, and that stochastic fluctuations might still persist at reactor powers close to operating conditions (startup phase). An international program conducted by LANL, IRSN and CEA was therefore setup to experimentally detect and characterize such fluctuations and correlations. An experiment took place in 2017 at the Reactor Critical Facility (RCF) of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA). In this paper we will report the main findings of this experimental program, supported by stochastic models and by the development of a dedicated high-fidelity Monte Carlo simulation code. We will in particular describe and explain the strong patchiness in neutron power distributions measured at the RCF, as well as a peculiar ‘blinking’ behavior of the core, and discuss the consequences of these findings on nuclear safety.

Operation, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain of Lithium-ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has a rich history of funding key innovations in batteries through multiple programs, including the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy programs sponsored by the Vehicle Technologies Office and Advanced Manufacturing Office. These DOE-sponsored innovations have been critical in lowering the cost of lithium-ion batteries to less than $160/kWh and increasing their energy density to more than 250 Wh/kg, enhancing the nation’s electrification system and achieving higher degrees of decarbonization. These investments continue to be crucial for positioning the United States as the hub for the most cumulative battery R&D programs worldwide. However, major breakthroughs in battery manufacturing are still needed to enable an electrified future evolving to predominantly incorporate rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. This will require a strong battery manufacturing base that will not only enable cutting-edge advancements in materials and manufacturing sciences but will also allow the United States to become a world leader in this fast-growing area. This review aims at supporting DOE’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Loan Program to give technology background and information that can be used to develop the basis for loan topics and evaluate battery applications. Such a program can represent a significant stride toward reinforcing the US position in advanced manufacturing by introducing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sensing and smart controls to facilitate, expedite, and lead the battery industry by 2030.

nEXO Passive Signal Chain

The Next Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) primary mission goal is to detect neutrinoless double beta decay, proving neutrinos are Majorana type fermions. Neutrinoless double beta decay (0vBB) is a theoretical type of radioactive decay in which two electrons and no neutrinos are emitted.

Electrification of Pakistan's Transport System: Modeling Electric Vehicle Penetration and Energy Supply Chain Impacts

Initial analysis of the National Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP) of Pakistan was undertaken by an integrated energy planning team from November 2019 through August 2020. This technical reference document seeks to present the background, inputs and assumptions, methodology, and results of the policy analysis in detail. The intended audience is the technical modeler, analyst, or reviewer who seeks to understand specifically the modeling effort within this initial analytical phase, with the end-goal of interpreting, re-producing, or modifying the simulations or extending the models to conduct follow-on studies subsequently. These studies may examine in greater detail the energy sector, impacts to emissions, charging station infrastructure needs, and overall benefits-cost trade of the policy, among other areas of interest.
