Puerto Rico Demand Response Impact and Forecast Tool (PR-DRIFT) - Beta Version [Slides]

Due to high fossil fuel imports, high electricity rates, an unreliable electricity grid, and 100% renewable electricity goals, demand response can play a crucial role for the Puerto Rico electricity grid. The Puerto Rico Demand Response Impact and Forecast Tool (PR-DRIFT) is a spreadsheet-based tool in which users can estimate the potential impacts of demand response, energy efficiency, and VRE and storage adoption in Puerto Rico from 2021 through 2040. The tool includes projections for solar, wind, and battery adoption based on released RFPs and energy targets (including Act-17 2019) to generate a projected net load profile for each hour through 2040. Based on user inputs and default assumptions, the tool also projects load profile impacts of demand response and energy efficiency, and is specifically focused on highlighting projected demand response technical potential. This demand response technical potential can be used by local utilities, regulators, program administrators, or researchers to help design demand response programs for larger impact.

Analysis of the MQXFA Low Beta Quadrupoles for HL-LHC after 50% magnet assembly complete +

The US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) is fabricating the MQXFA magnets to be used in the Q1 and Q3 Inner Triplet elements of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). This is the first production of Nb3Sn magnets for a particle accelerator, together with the MQXFB magnets for Q2a and Q2b. Here we show status and some results of MQXFA magnets fabrication and vertical test.

Collaborative Research: Parametric Instabilities of Alfven Waves in Low‐beta Plasmas

Alfven waves are of fundamental importance in magnetized plasmas. This project aims to advance our understanding of the basic physics of the parametric instabilities of Alfven waves using advanced computer simulations. The results will have implications for important processes in the heliosphere involving Alfven waves, such as coronal heating and solar wind heating.

PIP-II High Beta 650 Prototype Cryomodule Assembly Experience and Related Design Optimization

After shipment to the Daresbury Lab and return to Fermilab, the prototype HB650 cryomodule underwent another phase of 2K RF testing to ascertain any performance issues that may have arisen from the transport of the cryomodule. While measurements taken at room temperature after the conclusion of shipment indicated that there were no negative impacts on cavity alignment, beamline vacuum, or cavity frequency, testing at 2K was required to validate other aspects such as tuner operation, cavity coupling, cryogenic system integrity, and cavity performance. Results of this latest round of limited 2K testing will be presented.

Maximizing RHIC Deliverable Luminosity with Dynamic Telescopic Beta* Squeeze

To benefit fully from the exceptional performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ions Collider (RHIC) Stochastic Cooling system during heavy ions physics store, the betatron amplitude β ∗ at a given col lision point (IP) can be squeezed from its design value by using the available space in the quadrupole triplets from smaller beam emittances. This should allow reaching new heights in deliverable lumi nosity for both STAR and PHENIX experiments. Prior to 2014, RHIC lattice designs only squeezed the interaction regions (IR’s) down to β ∗ = 0.70 m. To get past this limitation, one can use a telescopic scheme where the non-experimental insertions surrounding STAR and PHENIX are used to generate and close a β-beat wave contributing to the final squeeze in the two IP’s of interest. The following presents the various steps of the implementation in RHIC of this telescopic scheme and the corresponding changes in collision rates and specific luminosity. A full feasibility study with a review of hardware and beam dynamics limitations is also included.

The Effects of Beta Irradiation on the Performance of ATR Fiber Probes

The use of real-time inline monitoring to track the chemical composition of slurries is recognized as a promising method to reduce the processing time of Hanford tank waste. The conversion of waste into glass suitable for long-term storage requires adherence to waste acceptance criteria and process control limits that respectively ensure safe operation of the vitrification facility and suitable glass quality. Real-time measurements of blended waste materials can ensure that the various criteria are met or can be addressed in a timely manner.
