AHIMSA - Ad hoc histogram information measure sensing algorithm for feature selection in the context of histogram inspired clustering techniques

An algorithm is proposed for dimensionality reduction in the context of clustering techniques based on histogram analysis. The approach is based on an evaluation of the hills and valleys in the unidimensional histograms along the different features and provides an economical means of assessing the significance of the features in a nonparametric unsupervised data environment. The method has relevance to remote sensing applications.

A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics

The effects of composites as adherends was studied. Several other variables were studied by fractography: aluminum powder adhesive filler, fiber glass cloth scrim or adhesive carrier, new adhesives PPQ-413 and LARC-13, and strength-test temperature. When the new results were juxtaposed with previous work, it appeared that complex interactions between adhesive, adherend, bonding, and testing conditions govern the observed strength and fracture-surface features. The design parameters likely to have a significant effect upon strength-test results are listed.

A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics

The ability of SEM/EDAX to determine the physical and chemical composition of very small areas was used to study several diverse types of samples representative of NASA-LaRC technology. More systematic investigation was carried out on differences in the results of grit-blasting Ti 6-4 adherends and the presence of extraneous elements, primarily silicon, in some polymer/HT-S fiber composites. Initial results were obtained from a fractured (ILS) short-beam shear specimen, and from Ti 6-4 alloy, before and after a proprietary Boeing anodizing surface preparation for adhesive bonding. Photomicrographs and EDAX spectra were also obtained from new, fractured lap shear strength specimens that employed PPQ and LARC-13 adhesives.

A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics

Various surface preparations for titanium 6-4 alloy were studied. An anodizing method was investigated, and compared with the results of other chemical treatments, namely, phosphate/fluoride, Pasa-Jell and Turco. The relative durability of the different surface treatments was assessed by monitoring changes in surface chemistry and morphology occasioned by aging at 505 K (450 F). Basic electron spectroscopic data were collected for polyimide and polyphenylquinoxaline adhesives and synthetic precursors. Fractographic studies were completed for several combinations of adherend, adhesive, and testing conditions.

A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics

Adherend surfaces and fractography were studied using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive analysis of X-rays. In addition, Auger Electron Spectroscopy with depth profiling capability was used. It is shown that contamination of adhesion systems plays an important role not only in determining initial bond strengths but also in the durability of adhesive bonds. It is concluded that the analytical techniques used to characterize and monitor such contamination.

End-to-end testing

The principle objective of the kinds of demonstration tests that are discussed is to try to verify whether or not carbon fibers that are released by burning composite parts in an aircraft-fuel fires can produce failures in electrical equipment. A secondary objective discussed is to experimentally validate the analytical models for some of the key elements in the risk analysis. The approach to this demonstration testing is twofold: limited end-to-end test are to be conducted in a shock tube; and planning for some large outdoor burn tests is being done.

A computer program for detailed analysis of the takeoff and approach performance capabilities of transport category aircraft

The takeoff and approach performance of an aircraft is calculated in accordance with the airworthiness standards of the Federal Aviation Regulations. The aircraft and flight constraints are represented in sufficient detail to permit realistic sensitivity studies in terms of either configuration modifications or changes in operational procedures. The program may be used to investigate advanced operational procedures for noise alleviation such as programmed throttle and flap controls. Extensive profile time history data are generated and are placed on an interface file which can be input directly to the NASA aircraft noise prediction program (ANOPP).

The economics of project analysis: Optimal investment criteria and methods of study

Insight is provided toward the development of an optimal program for investment analysis of project proposals offering commercial potential and its components. This involves a critique of economic investment criteria viewed in relation to requirements of engineering economy analysis. An outline for a systems approach to project analysis is given Application of the Leontief input-output methodology to analysis of projects involving multiple processes and products is investigated. Effective application of elements of neoclassical economic theory to investment analysis of project components is demonstrated. Patterns of both static and dynamic activity levels are incorporated.

A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics

The acid-base properties of titanium 6-4 plates (low surface area) were investigated after three different pretreatments, namely Turco, phosphate-fluoride and Pasa-Jell. A series of indicators was used and color changes were detected using diffuse reflectance visible spectroscopy. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis was used to examine the indicator on the Ti 6-4 surface. Specular reflectance infra-red spectroscopy was used to study the adsorption of stearic acid from cyclohexane solutions on the Ti 6-4 surface.

High-Lift Separated Flow About Airfoils

TRANSEP Calculates flow field about low-speed single-element airfoil at high-angle-of-attack and high-lift conditions with massive boundary-layer separation. TRANSEP includes effects of weak viscous interactions and can be used for subsonic/transonic airfoil design and analysis. The approach used in TRANSEP is based on direct-inverse method and its ability to use either displacement surface or pressure as airfoil boundary condition.

Solar energy system economic evaluation: Fern Tunkhannock, Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania

The economic performance of an Operational Test Site (OTS) is described. The long term economic performance of the system at its installation site and extrapolation to four additional selected locations to demonstrate the viability of the design over a broad range of environmental and economic conditions is reported. Topics discussed are: system description, study approach, economic analysis and system optimization, and technical and economical results of analysis. Data for the economic analysis are generated through evaluation of the OTS. The simulation is based on the technical results of the seasonal report simulation. In addition localized and standard economic parameters are used for economic analysis.

Noise suppression characteristics of peripherally segmented duct liners

The acoustic fields and transmission losses produced in semi-infinite circular ducts with peripherally segmented liners are analyzed using a series expansion of hard-wall duct modes. The coefficients of the series are computed using Galerkin's method. Unlike finite element approaches, this analysis includes the effects of realistic sources and the number of peripheral strips need not be small. It is shown that peripherally segmented liners redistribute the acoustic energy in waves composed of only a single circumferential mode at the source into other waves which contain a multitude of circumferential modes in the lined section. The accuracy of eigenfunctions computed from the analysis was observed to increase as either the frequency or radial mode order increased. The transmission losses were found to be accurate at frequencies above the cut-on value of the first-order radial mode in a hard-wall duct. The results show that for plane wave sources, peripherally segmented liners may attenuate as much sound as an optimized uniform liner at the optimal point while giving more noise suppression at most other frequencies.

On the scaling of crater dimensions. II - Impact processes

Holsapple and Schmidt (1980) previously addressed the problem of the scaling of explosive cratering. Their analysis included results which show under which conditions the scaling can be bounded between quarter-root and cube-root rules. The present investigation is an extension of the earlier analysis and approaches the case of impact cratering. More restrictive bounds are found for impact cratering than for the explosive case. These stronger results come from considering the role of the impactor momentum as an independent variable for impact cratering. Attention is given to impact cratering variables, general scaling rules, the bounds on scaling rules, a generalization to more variables, and previous scaling rules and results.

Winding for the wind

The mechanical properties and construction of epoxy-impregnated fiber-glass blades for wind turbines are discussed, along with descriptions of blades for the Mod 0A and Mod 5A WECS and design goals for a 4 kW WECS. Multicell structure combined with transverse filament tape winding reduces labor and material costs, while placing a high percentage of 0 deg fibers spanwise in the blades yields improved strength and elastic properties. The longitudinal, transverse, and shear modulus are shown to resist stresses exceeding the 50 lb/sq ft requirements, with constant stress resistance expected until fatigue failure is approached. Regression analysis indicates a fatigue life of 400 million operating cycles. The small WECS under prototype development features composite blades, nacelle, and tower. Rated at 5.7 kW in a 15 mph wind, the machine operates over a speed range of 9-53.9 mph and is expected to produce 16,200 kWh annually in a 10 mph average wind measured at 30 ft.

Radiative resistojet performance characterization tests

The test article, test approach, data analysis and results of a study undertaken to characterize performance of the augmentation section of the Rocket Research Company Augmented Catalytic Thruster as a gas resistojet using hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia as propellants are described. This renewed interest in resistojets is a result of propulsion systems definition studies which indicate potential application to space station auxiliary propulsion.
