Comparison of two total energy systems for a diesel power generation plant

The capabilities and limitations, as well as the associated costs for two total energy systems for a diesel power generation plant are compared. Both systems utilize waste heat from engine cooling water and waste heat from exhaust gases. Pressurized water heat recovery system is simple in nature and requires no engine modifications, but operates at lower temperature ranges. On the other hand, a two-phase ebullient system operates the engine at constant temperature, provides higher temperature water or steam to the load, but is more expensive.

Phase change thermal storage for a solar total energy system

An analytical and experimental program is being conducted on a one-tenth scale model of a high-temperature (584 K) phase-change thermal energy storage system for installation in a solar total energy test facility at Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. The thermal storage medium is anhydrous sodium hydroxide with 8% sodium nitrate. The program will produce data on the dynamic response of the system to repeated cycles of charging and discharging simulating those of the test facility. Data will be correlated with a mathematical model which will then be used in the design of the full-scale system.

The effect of surface anisotropy on the accuracy of total ozone estimates from satellite observations

The total amount of ozone in a vertical column of the earth's atmosphere is being derived from satellite measurements of the intensity of ultraviolet sunlight scattered by the earth-atmosphere system. The algorithm for deriving the ozone amount utilizes the assumption that the earth's surface reflects the incident light isotropically according to Lambert's law. Natural surface reflection deviates more or less from this law. Two extreme examples of anisotropic reflection from dark ocean and from bright snow are analyzed by means of models for their effects on the derived values of ozone.

Comparison of backscatter ultraviolet /BUV/ and ground-based total ozone fields for December 1970

For the period December 1970, comparison is made between the monthly average analyses (mapped fields) of the backscatter ultraviolet (BUV) total ozone data and the ground-based observations. In particular, significant differences of over 50 Dobson units are noted over the region of the North Atlantic Ocean with the BUV of greater magnitude than the ground-based data. As part of the overall verification program, both analyses are compared against the 100 mb height fields. The results indicate that the BUV analysis in the region of question is the more consistent of the two.

Evolution of the Cerenkov x total-energy telescope for isotopic analysis of cosmic rays

This paper discusses the evolution of the Cerenkov x total energy technique for isotopic analysis of cosmic rays as developed by the University of New Hampshire. This technique is generally restricted to particles with Z greater than 6, and the best mass resolution is achieved over a relatively narrow energy range just above the Cerenkov threshold. State-of-the-art mass resolution is now 0.3-0.4 AMU throughout the charge range z = 8-28 and over an energy range varying from about 40 MeV/n at lower Z to about 200 MeV/n for Fe.

An upper limit for the total energy of relativistic particles contained in the early stages of supernova explosions

A model is proposed for the emission of X-rays from supernova explosions wherein the thermal distribution of photons from a supernova photosphere is inverse Compton scattered by relativistic electrons within or near the surface of the star. Using this model, upper limits for the number of relativistic electrons and their total energy are established on the basis of upper limits to the observed X-ray luminosity of a supernova during maximum light. These upper limits, in conjunction with radio frequency upper limits obtained by Brown and Marscher, strongly suggest that supernovae do not produce significant numbers of relativistic particles until at least 70 years after the initial outburst. This, in turn, implies that young supernovae cannot account for the radio and X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei and quasars.

Solar total energy-large scale experiment, Shenandoah, Georgia

The design and development of a 7 meter diameter parabolic dish solar collector are discussed. Each of the four main subsystems of the collector: (1) reflector, (2) mount and drives, (3) receiver and (4) the controls, is discussed briefly with the major emphasis on the receiver design. To minimize development risks and production costs, a dish design based on use of stamped aluminum petals (sectors) was chosen. This design is similar to the design of a communication antenna already commercially produced. The reflective surface of the petals has a total reflectance of .86 and a specularity (dispersion) of 8 mrd. This performance is obtained by mechanical polishing and chemical brightening of the petal surface, followed by application of a clear RTV silicone protective coating. Selection of the material and weather proofing coated are discussed. Results from performance tests on an engineering development dish collector are presented and compared with pretest predictions.

Content of total iron, copper and manganese in liver of animals during hypokinesia, muscle activity and process of recovery

It is shown that the content of total iron, copper and manganese in the liver of animals is altered depending on the intensity and duration of their swimming. Hypodynamia for 7 days does not alter the concentration of iron, but sufficiently increases the content of copper and manganese. The barometric factor effectively influences the maintenance of constancy in the content of microelements accumulated in the liver after intensive muscle activity.

Equatorial electrojet control on the low latitude ionospheric total electron content

Faraday rotation measurements at 140 MHz were made at a number of locations (covering dip latitudes 3 deg N to 27 deg N) in India, during the period October 1975 to July 1976, when the geosynchronous satellite ATS-6 was positioned at 35 deg E. The ionospheric total electron content (TEC) derived from these measurements shows a semi-annual variation with maxima in equinoxes at all the stations. It is observed that the mean peak electron content is more in April than in October, for the stations situated to the north (poleward) of the crest of the equatorial anomaly whereas for the stations situated to the south (equatorward) of the crest of the equatorial anomaly, a peak larger in October than in April is observed. The equatorial electrojet in this period is found to be stronger in April than in October and can be considered as contributing to this asymmetry in the semi-annual variation of the ionospheric TEC.

The total scattering cross sections for H2 + H2, D2 + D2, and HD + HD for relative collision energies below 10 meV

Relative total scattering cross sections for normal H2 + normal H2, para-H2 + para-H2, normal D2 + normal D2, ortho-D2 + ortho-D2, and HD + HD were measured at energy below 10 meV by colliding particles from two inclined nozzle beams. Cross sections for the H2 + H2 pairs were measured over a relative velocity range of 200-1450 m/s; the normal H2 + normal H2 results suggest a l = 3 orbiting resonance near 375 m/s while the para-H2 + para-H2 results have a l = 4 orbiting resonance near 585 m/s. This latter resonance has a peak energy of 1.79 meV and a FWHM of 1.05 meV. The D2 + D2 cross sections were measured over the velocity range of 190 to 1000 m/s and a minimum between the l = 4 and l = 5 orbiting resonances was observed. Some preliminary measurements on HD + HD over the range of 250-1250 m/s indicate a possible l = 4 orbiting resonance near 300 m/s. The experimental work compares favorably to cross sections calculated from a theoretical potential.

Seasonal and interannual variations in total ozone revealed by the Nimbus 4 backscattered ultraviolet experiment

The first 2 years of backscattered ultraviolet (BUV) ozone data from the Nimbus 4 spacecraft have been processed to a more refined level. The seasonal variations of total ozone for the period April 1970 to April 1972 are described using daily means for 10 deg latitude zones and a time-latitude cross section. In addition, the BUV data are compared with analyzed Dobson data and with infrared interferometer spectrometer data also obtained from the Nimbus 4 spacecraft. A harmonic analysis was performed on the daily zonal means. Amplitudes, days of peak ozone values, and percentage of variance have been computed for the annual and semiannual waves and for higher harmonics of an annual period for the 2 years. Asymmetries are found in the annual waves in the two hemispheres, with a subtle interannual difference which may be due to changes in the general circulation. A significant semiannual component is detected in the tropics for the first year. This component appears to result from influences of the annual waves in the two hemispheres. A search for shorter periods using the harmonic analysis revealed no periodicity whose amplitude was higher than the noise level.

Total carbon and sulfur abundances in Antarctic meteorites

Total carbon and sulfur abundances have been measured in five Antarctic meteorites. Two C2 carbonaceous chondrites Yamato 74662 and Allan Hills 77306 have sulfur abundances (3.490 plus or minus .040% and 3.863 plus or minus 0.050% respectively) similar to other C2 chondrites but their carbon abundances (1.514 plus or minus 0.050% and 1.324 plus or minus .040% respectively) are lower than previously measured C2 chondrites. The decreased carbon abundances may reflect the effects of weathering in cold environments. Carbon and sulfur abundances for one C4 carbonaceous chondrite, one E4 enstatite chondrite and one ureilite are similar to values reported previously for meteorites of the same petrologic grades.

Total aircraft flight-control system - Balanced open- and closed-loop control with dynamic trim maps

The availability of the airborne digital computer has made possible a Total Aircraft Flight Control System (TAFCOS) that uses virtually the complete nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic data for the aircraft to construct dynamic trim maps that represent an inversion of the aircraft model. The trim maps, in series with the aircraft, provide essentially a linear feed-forward path. Basically, open-loop trajectory control is employed with only a small perturbation feedback signal required to compensate for inaccuracy in the aircraft model and for external disturbances. Simulation results for application to an automatic carrier-landing system are presented. Flight-test results for a STOL aircraft operating automatically over a major portion of its flight regime are presented. The concept promises a more rapid and straightforward design from aerodynamic principles, particularly for highly nonlinear configurations, and requires substantially less digital computer capacity than conventional automatic flight-control system designs.

On the combination of kinematics with flow visualization to compute total circulation - Application to vortex rings in a tube

To date the computation of the total circulation, or strength of a vortex has required detailed measurements of the velocity field within the vortex. In this paper a method is described in which the kinematics of the vortical flow field is exploited to calculate the strength of a vortex from relatively simple flow visualization measurements. There are several advantages in the technique, the most important being the newly acquired ability to calculate the transient changes in strength of a single vortex as it evolves. The method is applied to the study of vortex rings, although the development can be carried over directly to study vortex pairs, and it is expected that it can be generalized to other flows which contain regions of concentrated vorticity. The accuracy of the method as applied to vortex rings, assessed in part by comparing with the laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) measurements of Sullivan et al., is shown to be excellent.

Measurements of NO, O3, and temperature at 19.8 km during the total solar eclipse of 26 February 1979

Local measurements of stratospheric NO and O3 mixing ratios and air temperature were made during the total solar eclipse of 26 February 1979. The instrumentation was carried aboard a U-2 aircraft flown at an altitude of 19.8 km in the region near 47 deg N, 112 deg W. Eclipse maximum occurred approximately in the middle of the 2-3/4-hr measurement period. The NO mixing ratio was reduced at least a factor of 25 at the maximum of the eclipse. The decrease and recovery of NO during the passage of the Moon's shadow over the measurement region follows approximately the predictions of two independent models. No change was observed in either the O3 mixing ratio or the air temperature that could be attributed to the eclipse.
