Solution of 3-dimensional time-dependent viscous flows. Part 3: Application to turbulent and unsteady flows

A numerical scheme is developed for solving the time dependent, three dimensional compressible viscous flow equations to be used as an aid in the design of helicopter rotors. In order to further investigate the numerical procedure, the computer code developed to solve an approximate form of the three dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations employing a linearized block implicit technique in conjunction with a QR operator scheme is tested. Results of calculations are presented for several two dimensional boundary layer flows including steady turbulent and unsteady laminar cases. A comparison of fourth order and second order solutions indicate that increased accuracy can be obtained without any significant increases in cost (run time). The results of the computations also indicate that the computer code can be applied to more complex flows such as those encountered on rotating airfoils. The geometry of a symmetric NACA four digit airfoil is considered and the appropriate geometrical properties are computed.

Laboratory identification of the 3S(2)3P(2) (3)P2,1-3S3P(3) (5)S2(0) intersystem lines of S III

The spin-changing triple-quintet intersystem lines of S III have been identified in laboratory spectra for the first time. The wavelengths are 1728.939 and 1713.117 A with an uncertainty of plus-or-minus 5 mA. These values are about 250 times more precise than those from the IUE spectra of the Io torus where these lines were first detected. The 1728.939 line is coincident with strong, previously unidentified features in the spectrum of the sun, RR Tel, and V 1016 Cyg. The 1713.117 line and an Fe II line at 1712.997 A form barely resolvable doublets in the latter two spectra. The S III intersystem lines are likely to be density sensitive and therefore a potential new diagnostic for astrophysical plasmas.

Differential electron scattering cross sections for the 3 (2)S to 3 (2)P0 h, k transitions in Mg II - Comparison of experiment and theory

Angular differential electron scattering cross sections are reported for the unresolved inelastic 3s (2)S to 3p (2)P0 h, k transitions in Mg II for the first time. Relative differential cross sections have been measured at 35 eV and 50 eV in the angular range of Theta between 6 and 17 deg using the newly developed electron energy loss technique in a crossed electron-ion beam geometry. Theoretical values have been calculated in a five-state close-coupling approximation in which 3s, 3p, 3d, 4s, and 4p states were included, and to which measurements were normalized at Theta = 12 deg.

Comparison of full 3-D, thin-film 3-D, and thin-film plate analyses of a postbuckled embedded delamination

Local buckling can cause large interlaminar stresses along the delamination front, which can lead to delamination growth. This paper examines several methods of calculating strain-energy release rates, which are often used to predict delamination growth. The thin-film plate analysis, which was least expensive, calculated the total strain-energy release rate G(T) quite accurately. However, the stress field along the delamination front is highly mixed-mode and has no fixed ratio of G(I) to G(II). Since plate analysis can only calculate G(T), it would not be useful for accurate predictions of delamination growth if mode mix is important.

Near-infrared absorption spectra of (O-16)3 and (O-18)3 - Adiabatic energy of the 1A2 state?

The band positions and isotope shifts for the weak vibronic bands of O3 near 1 micron are determined experimentally using a low-resolution dual-beam absorption spectrometer with a 0.2-m holographic-grating monochromator and identical absorption chambers of volume about 600 cu cm and optical path length 46 cm. The experimental setup and procedures and the signal-processing methods applied are described, and the results are presented in tables and graphs. It is found that the adiabatic energy of the 1A2 state lies 9990 + or - 70/cm (1.24 + or - 0.01 eV) above the electronic ground state, close to the O + O2 dissociation limit. The applicability of the present results to studies of O3 in the upper atmosphere is indicated.

Comparison of full 3-D, thin-film 3-D, and thin-film plate analyses of a postbuckled embedded delamination

Strain-energy release rates are often used to predict when delamination growth will occur in laminates under compression. Because of the inherently high computational cost of performing such analyses, less rigorous analyses such as thin-film plate analysis were used. The assumptions imposed by plate theory restrict the analysis to the calculation of total strain energy, G(sub t). The objective is to determine the accuracy of thin-film plate analysis by comparing the distribution of G(sub t) calculated using fully three dimensional (3D), thin-film 3D, and thin-film plate analyses. Thin-film 3D analysis is the same as thin-film plate analysis, except 3D analysis is used to model the sublaminate. The 3D stress analyses were performed using the finite element program NONLIN3D. The plate analysis results were obtained from published data, which used STAGS. Strain-energy release rates were calculated using variations of the virtual crack closure technique. The results demonstrate that thin-film plate analysis can predict the distribution of G(sub t) quite well, at least for the configurations considered. Also, these results verify the accuracy of the strain-energy release rate procedure for plate analysis.

Advanced transportation system studies technical area 3: Alternate propulsion subsystem concepts, volume 3

The objective of this contract was to provide definition of alternate propulsion systems for both earth-to-orbit (ETO) and in-space vehicles (upper stages and space transfer vehicles). For such propulsion systems, technical data to describe performance, weight, dimensions, etc. was provided along with programmatic information such as cost, schedule, needed facilities, etc. Advanced technology and advanced development needs were determined and provided. This volume separately presents the various program cost estimates that were generated under three tasks: the F-1A Restart Task, the J-2S Restart Task, and the SSME Upper Stage Use Task. The conclusions, technical results, and the program cost estimates are described in more detail in Volume 1 - Executive Summary and in individual Final Task Reports.
