Fe-Phosphates in the Jezero Crater Fan: Implications for Habitability and Sample Return

In the ~1000 sols since the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover landed on the floor of Jezero crater, it has traversed >23 km, carrying out analyses of the crater floor and western fan. The fan is comprised of sediments transported and deposited by streams that once flowed into Jezero crater in the late Noachian to early Hesperian[1]. Detailed investigation of the sediments and rocks of the western fan can thus provide insights into ancient fluvial to lacustrine environments on Mars, whether they were habitable, and/or if biosignatures maybe preserved.

Biosignature Preservation Potential of Sulfate-Rich Rocks From Hogwallow Flats, Jezero Crater, Mars

The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover discovered fine grained sedimentary rocks in the Hogwallow Flats member of the Shenandoah Formation at the ~3.6- to 3.8-billion-year-old Jezero crater, Mars. Mudstones and sandstones at the 3-meter-thick Hogwallow Flats (HWF) outcrop, and a laterally equivalent outcrop known as “Yori Pass”, show extensive evidence of diagenesis (alteration after deposition). Enhanced preservation of organic matter and other biosignatures can occur in early diagenetic environments associated with aqueous alteration in a lake, floodplain or pro-deltaic setting, as envisaged for HWF and Yori Pass [1]. Three drilled rock cores were collected from HWF-type bedrock as part of the Mars Sample Return Program. They are considered to be the samples with the highest potential to preserve organic compounds and biosignatures out of all samples collected so far by Perseverance (as of mission Sol 1000) [2]. This work outlines the implications of diagenesis for biosignature preservation in rock samples for possible return to Earth.

Depositional History of the Upper Sequence of the Western Fan: Evidence for Late-Stage Fluvial and Potential Igneous Activity, Jezero Crater, Mars

Within Jezero crater, a 45 km diameter Noachian-aged crater on Mars, the Upper Fan group (UFg) stratigraphy records the youngest interval of sediment deposition via aqueous activity on the western fan. From orbital images, the UFg surface is characterized by ridges interpreted to be associated with channels that can be group based on orientation into distinct elongate and fan-shaped deposits. UFg deposits primarily consist of a sandstone to granule conglomerate facies covered by a lithified boulder conglomerate or dense accumulations of loose boulders along the surface. The coarse-grained nature of UFg deposits and the unconformable contact with the underlying fan stratigraphy suggest that the UFg represents a higher-energy shift from the relatively longer-lived, lower-energy aqueous systems interpreted in underlying fan stratigraphy. The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover encountered the main exposures of the UFg deposits beginning on Sol 755 and has been continuously collecting data along its northwestward traverse across the fan, enabling reconciliation of orbitally-derived geomorphology with in-situ observations from the rover and Ingenuity helicopter. This work represents a combined assessment of the geomorphology and the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the UFg in order to establish its depositional and emplacement history. Determining the origins of the Upper Fan sequence will clarify how, when, and in what order aqueous environments evolved through time within Jezero crater (e.g. crater infill, overflow, breach, and lake level drop;). Finally, this work will provide critical context for the three rock samples within the UFg sample suite.

The Mars Sample Return Analogue Collection

The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover touched down in Jezero crater on February 18th, 2021, and sealed the first sample for Mars Sample Return (MSR) later that summer. As of sol 1088, 23 rock cores have been collected across a diverse set of lithologies that span rock types from sedimentary to igneous. As the cache on Perseverance continues to grow, the overall portfolio of MSR expands, creating long lasting implications for a wide net in the scientific community as well as supporting detailed analyses for generations to come. To best prepare for these precious samples to return to Earth one day, NASA and ESA are jointly planning to create a MSR Analogue Collection that will be available to the community in the near future.

Developing Mars-Based Clinical Scenarios for an Earth Independent Medical Operations (EIMO) – Based Decision Support Service

As crewed missions move beyond Low-Earth Orbit, pre-mission planning cannot fully buy down the medical risks of exploration-class missions. Martian missions, where increased hazards exist, (such as long-duration spaceflight, surface-level EVA operations, and communications delays) will require a paradigm shift in the structure of a medical system. An Earth-Independent Medical Operations-based Medical System (EIMO-MS) will need to optimize four critical domains to help provide medical care: utilization of Pre-Mission Planning, augmentation of Acute and Prolonged Medical Decision Making, automated tracking of Resource Management, and assistance in Task Load Balance. The ideal EIMO-MS will be able to accomplish this goal by having an interactive, adaptable interface that will be able to provide real-time medical services. It must respond based on the level of crewmember training, medical situation, and available medical and non-medical resources. To showcase the capabilities and requirements of such a sophisticated automated MS, a series of clinical scenarios of escalating complexity were developed with clinical and systems engineering input. These scenarios describe in clinical detail what a theoretical future medical system, enhanced with multiple information streams (such as a medical database, an AI-based Decision Support System, real-time monitoring, enhanced in-situ laboratory imaging, etc.) can achieve in conjunction with a trained and experienced crew. Scenarios are comprised of: a context section including objectives and applicable spaceflight environment, a highlighted assumptions section, a clinical narrative section, and a systems engineering activity diagram demonstrating the integrated Medical System (MS). The “swim lanes” of the activity diagram act as the logistical core of each scenario and show how the MS will interact with the crew, ground support, and other in-flight systems. The Design Reference Mission that is used for the scenarios is based on existing reference mission profiles [1] with a projected 30-sol stay on the Martian surface. Scenarios span the spectrum from planned evaluations, minor medical care, urgent care, surgical guidance, critical and expectant management, and behavioral health care. Mission complexity will exponentially increase during deep space and Mars exploration-class missions, and medical support for these missions will likewise need to increase in autonomy and adaptability. The integrated system that will support these missions will need to provide assistance in a variety of anticipated and unforeseen scenarios. These medical scenarios, guided by clinician input, are initial steps in crafting the requirements for an EIMO-based medical system. By working in a systems engineering framework, requirements and capabilities can be extracted and mapped while maintaining a clinical core.

Misfit p-type transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films, methods and applications

A p-type transparent conductive oxide (TCO) mixed metal oxide material layer formed upon a substrate has a formula M1xM2yOz generally, CaxCoyOz more specifically, and Ca3Co4O9 most specifically. Embodiments provide that the p-type TCO mixed metal oxide material may be formed absent an epitaxial crystalline relationship with respect to the substrate while using a sol-gel synthesis method that uses a chelating polymer material and not a block copolymer material.

Edge ICRF simulations in 3D geometry: From MHD equilibrium to coupling determination

We present in this work a consistent numerical scheme that allows the computation of 3D magnetic fields a nd 3D density profiles and their usage in ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) coupling simulations. We first utilize the PARVMEC code to compute the 3D free-boundary plasma equilibrium in the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation. Since the PARVMEC solution is only defined within the last closed flux surface (LCFS), the magnetic field domain is extended to the scrape-off layer (SOL) via the BMW code, which computes a divergence-free magnetic field solution arising from the external conductors’ vacuum field a nd t he PARVMEC flux surface currents. This magnetic reconstruction is then used in the EMC3-EIRENE transport code in order to compute 3D density profiles. In the last step, the RAPLICASOL code is utilized to compute the ICRF antenna S-matrices resulting from the 3D density profiles. We exemplify this scheme for the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. A new implementation of a curved model for the ASDEX Upgrade ICRF 2-strap antenna in RAPLICASOL allows simulations in realistic geometry, without any coordinate transformations.

Dopant Segregation in Single-Crystal Optical Fiber Grown via the Laser-Heated Pedestal Growth Technique

Single crystal (SC) optical fiber has promising potential to be used for optical fiber sensing applications in harsh conditions due to its robustness to high temperature, high radioactivity, and resistance to chemical corrosion as compared to optical sensors using silica fiber. However, SC fiber grown via the laser-heated pedestal growth (LHPG) technique innately does not have a core-cladding structure found in standard optical fiber, resulting in optical losses. In this work we investigate optimization of the growth parameters of a two LHPG process used to grow SC fiber with a graded index via introduction of dopants to the feedstock material. Feedstock material is fabricated with the first LHPG device, then sol-gel dip-coated to create outer films of dopant material. The dip-coated feedstock is used to grow SC fiber in which segregation of the dopant constituents occurs, resulting in a graded index of refraction across the fiber, and an effective core-cladding structure. Hardware and software improvements to both LHPG systems are presented and the growth parameters for short pieces of ~320-330 μm diameter YAG fiber has been established. Characterization techniques/procedures have also been established for future grown SC fiber. These improvements and preparations are anticipated to result in a significant increase in grown fiber quality with a similar growth rate to that previously established.

Verification of the Uniformly-Ordered Binary Decision Algorithm in Correlated-Benchmark Whisper Calculations

Whisper is a nuclear criticality safety code package that aids analysts in validation exercises by computing upper subcritical limits (USL) for applications of interest. To obtain statistically meaningful, significant, and conservative USLs, the analyst must ensure that Whisper selects a sufficient number of benchmarks that are neutronically similar to the application. Many of the available benchmarks are correlated but are currently treated as independent, leading to an artificially small sample size, as their individual information contributions will be overestimated. To aid the analyst in obtaining a sufficient sample size, prior work [2] demonstrated application of the Uniformly-Ordered Binary Decision (UOBD) algorithm in adjusting benchmark weights to account for benchmark correlations. This work provides verification of the Whisper implementation and considers the impact of updated benchmark correlations compared to those available previously. We demonstrate that the UOBD algorithm performs as expected with an analytic example. With HEU-SOL-THERM-001 cases 1 through 10 as the applications, we compare the USLs computed with benchmark correlations available in the Whisper 1.1 release only to those computed with additional benchmark correlations from DICE 2023 and demonstrate substantive differences.
