The economic impact of obtaining biomass could become significant to U.S. rural economies via the establishment of a bioeconomy. In 2023, the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory provided a road map to obtain over a billion tons of biomass for conversion to bioenergy and other products. Using information from this roadmap, this study estimates the potential positive and negative economic impacts that occur because of land use change, along with increased technological advances. This is achieved by using the input–output model, IMPLAN, and impacting 179 Bureau of Economic Analysis regions in the conterminous United States. Biomass included in the analysis comprises dedicated energy crops, crop residues, and forest residues. The analysis found that managing pastures more intensively could result in releasing land to produce dedicated energy crops on 30.8 million hectares, resulting in the production of 361 million metric tons of biomass. This, coupled with crop residues from barley, corn, oats, sorghum, and wheat (162 million metric tons), plus forest residues (41 million metric tons), provide 564 million dry metric tons of biomass. Assuming the price for biomass in 2023 dollars was USD 77 per dry metric-ton, this additional production results in an economic benefit for the nation of USD 619 billion, an increase from the Business As Is scenario (Baseline) of almost USD 100 billion per year, assuming a mature biomass industry. An additional 700,000 jobs are required to grow, harvest/collect, and transport the biomass material from the land.
The electric vehicles (EVs) market keeps growing globally; thus, it is critical to secure the EV charging communication protocols in order to guarantee reliable and fair charging operations among the customers. The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.0.1 supports the communication between the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and Charging Station Management Systems (CSMSs); therefore, it becomes vulnerable to several types of attacks, which aim to jeopardize smart charging, billing, and energy management. Specifically, OCPP 2.0.1 allows the self-reporting of the State of Charge (SOC) values, which makes it vulnerable to spoofing-based cyberattacks, which target manipulating the scheduling priorities, distorting the load forecasts, and extending the charging sessions in an unfair manner. In this paper, we try to address this type of attack by providing a comprehensive analysis of the SOC spoofing attacks and introducing a novel unsupervised detection framework based on the One-Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) algorithm. Specifically, two types of attack scenarios are analyzed (i.e., priority manipulation and session extension) by deriving engineered features that capture the nonlinear relationships under normal charging behavior. Detailed simulation-based results are derived by utilizing the DESL-EPFL Level 3 EV charging dataset. Our results demonstrate high F1-score and recall in identifying spoofed SOC values and that the proposed OCSVM model demonstrates superior performance compared to alternative clustering and deep-learning based detectors.
We report the fastest quasar outflow first detected in the ultraviolet, via variable C IV and Si IV absorption at outflow velocities −77,000 km s −1 to at least −90,000 km s −1 , in the radio-quiet quasar SDSS J231854.31+243954.2 (J2318). J2318 is a weak-lined quasar in the rest-frame ultraviolet, but Gemini GNIRS spectroscopy reveals an Hα redshift of z = 2.6781 ± 0.0004. A 20 yr photometric time series shows peak-to-peak variability of 0.5 mag in the g band. The C IV outflow strengthened monotonically over three epochs spanning ∼2.2 rest-frame years. The existence of such a high-velocity outflow implies that models of quasar outflows must be able to either accelerate gas to 0.3c while still preserving C IV and Si IV ions, or enable the formation of C IV and Si IV ions in gas, which has been accelerated to 0.3c. Virial estimates reveal a black-hole mass of 1.65 × 10 9 M ⊙ , which leads to an Eddington luminosity and Eddington ratio of 2.4 × 10 47 erg s −1 and 0.45, respectively. Using very conservative assumptions, the UV-absorbing outflow alone has an estimated mass loss of >0.82 M ⊙ yr −1 and a kinetic luminosity ratio L kin /L bol ≥ 0.75%. The lower limit is just above the threshold usually cited for significant feedback on the host galaxy. Comparison to PDS 456, the only other known quasar with a UV-absorbing outflow at 0.3c, suggests that the true $\dot{M}$ and Lkin/Lbol could be up to 2 orders of magnitude larger.
We leverage the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations to test how the large-scale cosmic web shapes galaxy morphology and to forecast the early cosmic web structure that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will reveal. In the hydrodynamic TNG50 and N-body TNG50-Dark runs, we reconstruct the cosmic web at redshifts z = 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 with the Monte Carlo Physarum Machine density estimator and the DisPerSE structure identification framework. We confirm that dark matter halos start out predominantly prolate (elongated), and their shapes are aligned with their nearest filaments; prolate galaxies retain strong shape alignment with their outer halos to later times. At z ≥ 1, the fraction of prolate (spheroidal) halos increases (decreases) toward lower stellar mass, higher redshift, and lower filament density. At z < 1, more spheroidal (oblate) stellar structures preferentially reside in higher-density (lower-density) filaments. We also find that higher-density filaments favor extended rotationally supported disks, whereas lower-density filaments more often host smaller dispersion-supported systems. Then, generating mock galaxy samples from TNG100 and TNG50, we predict the early cosmic web accessible to Roman. We find that the spectroscopic emission-line depth planned for the High-Latitude Wide-Area Survey (HLWAS) yields a highly incomplete galaxy sample that does not accurately trace the z = 1 cosmic web. A survey ≥2.5× deeper over a few square degrees would enable a proper reconstruction and reveal qualitatively correct filament–galaxy morphology relationships. Nevertheless, the planned HLWAS Deep field should still identify most galaxy overdensities; targeted deeper spectroscopy of these regions would efficiently and adequately map the early filamentary structure.
This document is being submitted to the 2024-2026 European Strategy for Particle Physics Update (ESPPU) process on behalf of the US Muon Collider community, with its preparation coordinated by the interim US Muon Collider Coordination Group. The US Muon Collider Community comprises a few hundred American scientists. The purpose of the document is to inform ESPPU about the US plans for Muon Collider research and development (R&D), explain how these efforts align with the broader international R&D initiatives, and present the US community vision for the future realization of this transformative project.
