The kinetics of the PuO 2 to Pu 2 O 3 conversion

Here in an oxidizing environment, the oxide formed on plutonium (Pu) metal is composed of a plutonium dioxide (PuO 2 ) top layer and a thin cubic plutonium sesquioxide (Pu 2 O 3 ) middle layer. In a reducing environment, the PuO 2 layer auto-reduces to cubic Pu 2 O 3 . The speed and extent of this conversion depend on the combination of temperature and time. While PuO 2 provides a strong diffusion barrier against unwanted Pu corrosion by gaseous species (like hydrogen), Pu 2 O 3 does not, since its crystal structure has chains of oxygen vacancies. The kinetics of the PuO 2 reduction are, therefore, of fundamental interest and enable researchers to better protect Pu from corrosion. In this report, the oxygen-diffusion-limited kinetics of the dioxide to sesquioxide conversion were obtained by dynamically heating a PuO 2 -covered Pu sample from 294 to 418 K in a high-vacuum vessel equipped with an in situ spectroscopic ellipsometer. The physical/chemical constraints in the conversion process were combined with the ellipsometry method of multi-sample analysis to track the percentage of PuO 2 and to compute the extent of Pu 2 O 3 formation. The resulting diffusion coefficients were compared against and then combined with complementary literature data to produce a comprehensive set of kinetic parameters for reliably modeling oxide conversion over a larger temperature range than spanned by prior studies. The extracted thermal activation energy barrier (43.7 kJ/mol) and pre-exponential factor (5.0 × 10 -10 cm 2 /s) for the oxygen-diffusion-limited process can be used to accurately model the PuO 2 to Pu 2 O 3 transformation in vacuum and/or inert gas applications.

A machine learning approach for determining temperature-dependent bandgap of metal oxides utilizing Allen–Heine–Cardona theory and O’Donnell model parameterization

To evaluate the high temperature sensing properties of metal oxide and perovskite materials suitable for use in combustion environments, it is necessary to understand the temperature dependence of their bandgaps. Although such temperature-driven changes can be calculated via the Allen–Heine–Cardona (AHC) theory, which assesses electron–phonon coupling for the bandgap correction at given temperatures, this approach is computationally demanding. Another approach to predict bandgap temperature-dependence is the O’Donnell model, which uses analytical expressions with multiple fitting parameters that require bandgap information at 0 K. This work employs data-driven Gaussian process regression (GPR) to predict the parameters employed in the O’Donnell model from a set of physical features. We use a sample of 54 metal oxides for which density functional theory has been performed to calculate the bandgap at 0 K, and the AHC calculations have been carried out to determine the shift in the bandgap at non-zero temperatures. As the AHC calculations are impractical for high-throughput screening of materials, the developed GPR model attempts to alleviate this issue by predicting the O'Donnell parameters purely from physical features. To mitigate the reliability issues arising from the very small size of the dataset, we apply a Bayesian technique to improve the generalizability of the data-driven models as well as quantify the uncertainty associated with the predictions. The method captures well the overall trend of the O’Donnell parameters with respect to a reduced feature set obtained by transforming the available physical features. Quantifying the associated uncertainty helps us understand the reliability of the predictions of the O’Donnell parameters and, therefore, the bandgap as a function of temperature for any novel material.

Impact of metal diffusion, lattice distortions, native defects, and ambient on dielectric breakdown in Ni–Ga 2 O 3 Schottky diodes

Ga 2 O 3 unipolar devices are of high interest due to their ~8 MV/cm predicted breakdown fields, which have not yet been achieved due to premature device failure. Pre- and post-failure defect analysis of Ni–Ga 2 O 3 Schottky diodes in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and air were performed using depth-resolved cathodoluminescence, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis to understand the physical mechanisms that precede premature breakdown. The breakdown voltage in UHV was dramatically reduced by nearly 40% compared with the breakdown in air. This reduction in the breakdown voltage correlated with post-breakdown differences in Ni distribution, indicating that the coordination and bonding of Ni contribute strongly to electrical behavior in Ni–Ga 2 O 3 Schottky diodes. Breakdown studies in UHV revealed that Ni diffuses away more from the metal–semiconductor interface than with air breakdown, where Ni localizes more near the interface, indicative of the preferential formation of a Ni oxide under O-poor conditions. These measurements also identified the formation of divacancy-interstitial complexes and their characteristic luminescence signature ~150 nm from the interface, the densities of which correlated with breakdown fields. These findings show that electric-field-induced degradation occurs via the rearrangement of native point defects, which act as an additional precursor to device failure. Macroscopically, they show the impact of both vacuum conditions and metal reactivity on Ga 2 O 3 device fabrication.

High-frequency electrical behavior in V 3 O 5 thin films

Vanadium oxides are known for their metal–insulator transition (MIT), with V 3 O 5 being notable for its transition temperature exceeding room temperature. At about 430 K, this material shows a change in crystal symmetry accompanied with one order of magnitude increase in its electrical conductivity and alterations in its optical properties. Although the property changes during the MIT in V 3 O 5 are less pronounced than those observed in VO 2 , its transition temperature is 90 K higher, making it appealing for applications requiring elevated temperatures. In this article, the high-frequency characteristics were determined in a V 3 O 5 two-terminal device in the range from 5 to 35 GHz. The S-parameters showed that the return loss at room temperature was close to −1.5 dB, and the isolation between ports was approximately −50 dB. At temperatures above the metal–insulator transition, the isolation decreased to around −40 dB at 35 GHz. For S11 and S22, similar behavior was observed at room temperature, with a notable change in the S-parameter phase of the device. This behavior suggests that V 3 O 5 may function well as a capacitor because the considerable change in phase could control the flow of electrical signals in devices. This property also may be used for matching purposes, especially considering its response to temperature changes. Additionally, conductivity calculation from S-parameters shows a decrease of approximately two orders of magnitude at 500 K and one order of magnitude at 300 K compared to DC values. These findings highlight V 3 O 5 potential for integration into radio frequency devices that demand consistent performance in high-temperature environments.

Light-induced H 2 generation in a photosystem I-O 2 -tolerant [FeFe] hydrogenase nanoconstruct

The fusion of hydrogenases and photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) has proven to be a promising strategy for the production of sustainable biofuels. Type I (iron-sulfur-containing) RCs, acting as photosensitizers, are capable of promoting electrons to a redox state that can be exploited by hydrogenases for the reduction of protons to dihydrogen (H 2 ). While both [FeFe] and [NiFe] hydrogenases have been used successfully, they tend to be limited due to either O 2 sensitivity, binding specificity, or H 2 production rates. In this study, we fuse a peripheral (stromal) subunit of Photosystem I (PS I), PsaE, to an O 2 -tolerant [FeFe] hydrogenase from Clostridium beijerinckii using a flexible [GGS] 4 linker group (CbHydA1-PsaE). We demonstrate that the CbHydA1 chimera can be synthetically activated in vitro to show bidirectional activity and that it can be quantitatively bound to a PS I variant lacking the PsaE subunit. When illuminated in an anaerobic environment, the nanoconstruct generates H 2 at a rate of 84.9 ± 3.1 µmol H 2 mg chl –1 h –1 . Further, when prepared and illuminated in the presence of O 2 , the nanoconstruct retains the ability to generate H 2 , though at a diminished rate of 2.2 ± 0.5 µmol H 2 mg chl –1 h –1 . This demonstrates not only that PsaE is a promising scaffold for PS I-based nanoconstructs, but the use of an O 2 -tolerant [FeFe] hydrogenase opens the possibility for an in vivo H 2 generating system that can function in the presence of O 2 .

Electronic and structural properties of single-crystal Jahn–Teller active Co 1+x Mn 2–x O 4 thin films

Recent investigations on spinel CoMn 2 O 4 have shown its potential for applications in water splitting and fuel cell technologies as it exhibits strong catalytic behavior through oxygen reduction reactivity. To further understand this material, we report for the first time the synthesis of single-crystalline Co 1+x Mn 2-x O 4 thin films using molecular beam epitaxy. By varying sample composition, we establish links between cation stoichiometry and material properties using in-situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Our results indicate that excess Co ions occupy interstitial tetrahedral sites up to a certain stoichiometry, then are substitutional for octahedrally-coordinated Mn beyond this threshold. Here, we compare these results with density functional theory models of stoichiometric CoMn 2 O 4 to understand how the Jahn-Teller distortion and hybridization in Mn-O bonds impact the ability to hole dope the material with excess Co. The findings provide important insights into CoMn 2 O 4 and related spinel oxides for future application as inexpensive oxygen reduction reaction catalysts.

Phase comparison and equation of state for Ta 2 O 5

Abstract Tantalum pentoxide (Ta 2 O 5 ) is among the most technologically useful heavy transition metal oxides. Unfortunately, its crystal structure is the subject of long-standing and unresolved disagreement. Among other consequences, this uncertainty has made it impossible to formulate a robust high pressure equation of state for Ta 2 O 5 . Here, we report the results of high pressure x-ray diffraction experiments indexed against a comprehensive list of proposed Ta 2 O 5 phases. Five of the proposed phases produce good matches to experimental observations, and the compressibility parameters for these phases are all consistent within uncertainty. This means that regardless of the particular phase chosen, the Ta 2 O 5 equation of state can be described with bulk modulus K 0 = 138 ± 3.68 GPa and pressure derivative K 0 ′ = 1.82 ± 0.45 . Combining these experimental results with new density-functional theory calculations allows us to identify the λ phase as the best structural model of Ta 2 O 5 at ambient conditions.

Operando study of mechanical integrity of high-volume expansion Li-ion battery anode materials coated by Al 2 O 3

Group IV elements and their oxides, such as Si, Ge, Sn and SiO have much higher theoretical capacity than commercial graphite anode. However, these materials undergo large volume change during cycling, resulting in severe structural degradation and capacity fading. Al 2 O 3 coating is considered an approach to improve the mechanical stability of high-capacity anode materials. To understand the effect of Al 2 O 3 coating directly, we monitored the morphology change of coated/uncoated Sn particles during cycling using operando focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy. Here, the results indicate that the Al 2 O 3 coating provides local protection and reduces crack formation at the early stage of volume expansion. The 3 nm Al 2 O 3 coating layer provides better protection than the 10 and 30 nm coating layer. Nevertheless, the Al 2 O 3 coating is unable to prevent the pulverization at the later stage of cycling because of large volume expansion.

Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3-δ as facile and tunable oxygen sorbents for chemical looping air separation

Abstract Chemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a promising technology for oxygen generation with high efficiency. The key challenge for CLAS is to design robust oxygen sorbents with suitable redox properties and fast redox kinetics. In this work, perovskite-structured Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3 oxygen sorbents were investigated and demonstrated for oxygen production with tunable redox properties, high redox rate, and excellent thermal/steam stability. Cobalt doping at B site was found to be highly effective, 33% improvement in oxygen productivity was observed at 500 °C. Moreover, it stabilizes the perovskite structure and prevents phase segregation under pressure swing conditions in the presence of steam. Scalable synthesis of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 oxygen sorbents was carried out through solid state reaction, co-precipitation, and sol-gel methods. Both co-precipitation and sol-gel methods are capable of producing Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 sorbents with satisfactory phase purity, high oxygen capacity, and fast redox kinetics. Large scale evaluation of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 , using an automated CLAS testbed with over 300 g sorbent loading, further demonstrated the effectiveness of the oxygen sorbent to produce 95% pure O 2 with a satisfactory productivity of 0.04 g O2 g sorbent −1 h −1 at 600 °C.

The origin of metallic conductivity in Pt 3 O 4 : a first principles study

The platinum oxide Pt 3 O 4 exhibits metallic conductivity even though it contains square-planar PtO4 units, which in related oxides such as PtO are usually associated with insulating behavior. To identify the electronic origin of this anomalous metallicity, we performed a comprehensive first-principles study using the PBE and r 2 SCAN functionals together with Hubbard U corrections and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Structural benchmarks show that r 2 SCAN with SOC and a moderate U value (<4 eV) reproduces the experimental lattice constants and formation enthalpy, whereas larger U values (~8 eV) destabilize the cubic structure. Across all functionals and U values considered in this work, Pt 3 O 4 remains metallic. Analyses of the projected density of states, band structures, charge-density isosurfaces, and bonding characteristics demonstrate that the dominant contribution to the metallic character originates from delocalized Pt–O–Pt hybridized antibonding states at the Fermi level. Direct Pt–Pt interactions are present but contribute less strongly to the conductivity. Bader charge analysis reveals only weak Pt charge disproportionation, consistent with mixed Pt II /Pt III character, and a small charge-transfer energy that prevents localization of the Pt 5d electrons even at elevated U. In contrast, PtO develops a Mott or charge-transfer gap under modest U despite having the same PtO 4 coordination environment. These findings demonstrate that persistent Pt–O–Pt covalency is the primary driver of metallicity in Pt 3 O 4 and support the view that this phase can remain conductive under oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction conditions in fuel cell and electrolyzer environments.

Unravelling competing microscopic interactions at a phase boundary: A single-crystal study of the metastable antiferromagnetic pyrochlore Yb 2 Ge 2 O 7

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements from our newly synthesized single crystals of the structurally metastable antiferromagnetic pyrochlore Yb 2 Ge 2 O 7 . We determine the four symmetry-allowed nearest-neighbor anisotropic exchange parameters via fits to linear spin wave theory supplemented by fits of the high-temperature specific heat using the numerical linked-cluster expansion method. The exchange parameters so-determined are strongly correlated to the values determined for the g-tensor components, as previously noted for the related Yb pyrochlore Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . To address this issue, we directly determined the g-tensor from electron paramagnetic resonance of 1% Yb-doped Lu 2 Ge 2 O 7 , thus enabling an unambiguous determination of the exchange parameters. Our results show that Yb 2 Ge 2 O 7 resides extremely close to the classical phase boundary between an antiferromagnetic Γ 5 phase and a splayed ferromagnet phase. By juxtaposing our results with recent ones on Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , our work illustrates that the Yb pyrochlore oxides represent ideal systems for studying quantum magnets in close proximity to classical phase boundaries.

Structure and dynamics of $\mathrm{Fe_{90}}$$\mathrm{Si_3}$$\mathrm{O_7}$ liquids close to Earth's liquid core conditions

Using an artificial neural-network machine learning interatomic potential, we have performed molecular dynamics simulations to study the structure and dynamics of $\mathrm{Fe_{90}}$$\mathrm{Si_3}$$\mathrm{O_7}$ liquid close to the Earth's liquid core conditions. Here, the simulation results reveal that the short-range structural order (SRO) in the $\mathrm{Fe_{90}}$$\mathrm{Si_3}$$\mathrm{O_7}$ liquid is very strong. About 80% of the atoms are arranged in crystallinelike SRO motifs. In particular, ~ $70$% of Fe-centered clusters can be classified as either hexagonal-close-packed-like or icosahedrallike SRO motifs. The SRO clusters centered on Fe, Si, or O atoms are strongly intermixed and homogenously distributed throughout the liquid. The atomic structure of the liquid and the fractions of dominant SRO clusters are not sensitive to pressure/temperature used in the simulations except that the SRO of the O-centered clusters is enhanced close to inner core pressures. The O-diffusion coefficient is about two to three times larger than the Fe and Si ions and increases more rapidly in the deeper core regions.

Revisiting spin ice physics in the ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7

Pyrochlore materials are characterized by their hallmark network of corner-sharing rare-earth tetrahedra, which can produce a wide array of complex magnetic ground states. Ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores often obey the “two-in-two-out” spin ice rules, which can lead to a highly degenerate spin structure. Large moment systems, such as Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 , tend to host a classical spin ice state with low-temperature spin freezing and emergent magnetic monopoles. Systems with smaller effective moments, such as Pr 3+ -based pyrochlores, have been proposed as excellent candidates for hosting a “quantum spin ice” characterized by entanglement and a slew of exotic quasiparticle excitations. However, experimental evidence for a quantum spin ice state has remained elusive. Here, in this work, we show that the low-temperature magnetic properties of Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 satisfy several important criteria for continued consideration as a quantum spin ice. We find that Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 exhibits two distinct spin-correlation time scales of τ ≥ 10 –4 and ~10 –10 s in the spin ice regime. Our comprehensive bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements enable us to map out the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, producing results consistent with expectations for a ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore. We identify key hallmarks of spin ice physics and show that the application of small magnetic fields (μ 0 H c ~0.5 T) suppresses the spin ice state and induces a field-polarized, ordered spin-ice phase. Together, our work clarifies the current state of Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 and encourages future studies aimed at exploring the potential for a quantum spin ice ground state in this system.

Melting and transport properties of Al 2⁢ O 3 at extreme conditions

The high-pressure, temperature phase diagram and transport properties of materials are of broad interest to planetary sciences and high-energy-density sciences and applications. Alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) or its various forms (e.g., solutions with other oxides or silicates) are important constituents in Earth’s and super-Earths’ mantles, common window materials in dynamic compression experiments, and standard pressure calibrators in diamond-anvil-cell experiments. Its structures and transport properties are of particular importance but have not been well studied at above 100 GPa pressures. Based on extensive first-principles molecular dynamics calculations, we obtain atomic level insights on structural differences and accurate results on electrical conductivity (σ dc ), thermal conductivity (κ), and reflectivity of Al 2 O 3 in several phases at pressures of ~130–1300 GPa and temperatures of 4000–20,000 K. We find the solid-to-liquid state changes of Al 2 O 3 are accompanied by an insulator-to-semimetal transition with enhanced σ dc and κ, which is similar to other silicates and oxides and can facilitate magnetic field generation in deep interiors of rocky planets. We also find the solid-to-solid transition (from Rh 2 O 3 (II) to CaIrO 3 ) is accompanied by negligible changes in σ dc and κ at 160 GPa, contrary to previous expectations, whereas another higher pressure phase transition (CaIrO 3 to U 2 S 3 at 450 GPa) is associated with increases in σ dc and κ. Furthermore, we show the transport properties can be enhanced by oxygen vacancy in Al 2 O 3 , but are not significantly affected by forming solutions with MgSiO 3 , particularly when in the solid states.

Electron Glass Phase with Resilient Zhang-Rice Singlets in LiCu 3 ⁢O 3

LiCu 3 ⁢O 3 is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge-sharing Cu(II)O (3⁢d 9 ) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3⁢d 10 ) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory reveal two insulating electronic subsystems that are segregated in spite of sharing common oxygen atoms: a Cu d z 2 /O p z derived valence band (VB) dispersing on the Cu(I) plane, and a Cu 3⁢d x 2 -y 2 /O 2⁢p x,y derived Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) band dispersing on the Cu(II)O planes. First-principle analysis shows the Li substitution to stabilize the insulating ground state, but only if antiferromagnetic correlations are present. Li further induces substitutional disorder and a 2D electron glass behavior in charge transport, reflected in a large 530 meV Coulomb gap and a linear suppression of VB spectral weight at E F that is observed by ARPES. Surprisingly, the disorder leaves the Cu(II)-derived ZRS largely unaffected. Finally, this indicates a local segregation of Li and Cu atoms onto the two separate corner-sharing Cu⁡(II)⁢O 2 sub-lattices of the edge-sharing Cu(II)O planes, and highlights the ubiquitous resilience of the entangled two hole ZRS entity against impurity scattering.

Isostructural Phase Transition of Fe 2 ⁢O 3 under Laser Shock Compression

We present in situ x-ray diffraction and velocity measurements of Fe 2⁢ O 3 under laser shock compression at pressures between 38–122 GPa. None of the high-pressure phases reported by static compression studies were observed. Instead, we observed an isostructural phase transition from 𝛼−Fe 2⁢ O 3 to a new 𝛼′−Fe 2 ⁢O 3 phase at a pressure of 50–62 GPa. The 𝛼′−Fe 2⁢ O 3 phase differs from 𝛼−Fe 2 ⁢O 3 by an 11% volume drop and a different unit cell compressibility. We further observed a two-wave structure in the velocity profile, which can be related to an intermediate regime where both 𝛼 and 𝛼′ phases coexist. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard parameter indicate that the observed unit cell volume drop can be associated with a spin transition following a magnetic collapse.

Insights into ε - Fe 2 O 3 interactions via Cr doping

We report innovative materials, particularly multiferroics, have the potential to transform technology. Full optimization of their usage will require an in-depth understanding of the underlying electronic and magnetic interactions. One such material is ε-Fe 2 O 3 . However, because this hard ferrimagnet with strong magnetoelectric coupling is composed of only Fe 3+ , distinguishing the role of the various sites is incredibly challenging. To overcome this challenge, Cr 3+ ions were doped into the DOh1 sites of ε-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles, effectively creating electron deficient defects. The ε-(Fe 1-x Cr x ) 2 O 3 (x = 0.01 to 0.12) nanoparticles have reduced μ 0 H C (T) and M S (T) as the Cr concentration increases. The impact of Cr doping on the local electronic and magnetic structure is characterized. At 10 K, subtle changes are measured, with the T d site electrons becoming increasingly localized as the concentration of electron-deficient DOh1 sites increases. Far more dramatic changes occur at 300 K, when the T d site of the ε-(Fe 1-x Cr x ) 2 O 3 splits into two distinct local environments with Fe 2+ and Fe 4+ character. The nature of this splitting suggests that dynamic electron interactions play a significant role in ε-Fe 2 O 3 ’s magnetic anisotropy and magnetoelectric properties.

Probing Ice-Rule-Breaking Transition in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 Thin Film by Proximitized Transport and Magnetic Torque

While the spin-ice state of bulk pyrochlores such as Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Ho 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 has been extensively studied in the past several decades due to its unique degenerate ground state and emergent monopole excitation, whether it survives in the thin-film form remains a mystery. The limited volume of the thin-film sample makes it challenging to study the intrinsic magnetic properties. Here, we synthesized 18-nm-thick Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 thin film on yttria-stabilized zirconia with 9.5 mol% Y 2 ⁢O 3 substrate and capped it by a thin conductive Bi 2 ⁢Ir 2 ⁢O 7 layer and performed the proximitized magnetoresistance measurements. Our Letter found that the ice-rule-breaking phase transition survives but with a modified effective nearest-neighbor interaction (𝐽 eff =1.054 K) and distorted Ising spin axes (𝜀 = +0.051) compared to the bulk crystal. Furthermore, the results are supported by the simultaneously measured capacitive torque magnetometry. Our Letter demonstrates that proximitized transport is an effective tool for thin films of insulating frustrated magnets.
