Principal Component Analysis of azimuthal flow in intermediate-energy heavy-ion reactions

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) via Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of large datasets is an adaptive exploratory method to uncover natural patterns underlying the data. Several recent applications of the PCA-SVD to event-by-event single-particle azimuthal angle distribution matrices in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-LHC energies indicate that the sine and cosine functions chosen a priori in the traditional Fourier analysis are naturally the most optimal basis for azimuthal flow studies according to the data itself. We perform PCA-SVD analyses of mid-central Au+Au collisions at $E$ $beam$ / $A$ =1.23 GeV simulated using an isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model to address the following two questions: (1) if the principal components of the covariance matrix of nucleon azimuthal angle distributions in heavy-ion reactions around 1 GeV/nucleon are naturally sine and/or cosine functions and (2) what if any advantages the PCA-SVD may have over the traditional flow analysis using the Fourier expansion for studying the EOS of dense nuclear matter. In conclusion, we find that (1) in none of our analyses the principal components come out naturally as sine and/or cosine functions, (2) while both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the covariance matrix are appreciably EOS dependent, the PCA-SVD has no apparent advantage over the traditional Fourier analysis for studying the EOS of dense nuclear matter using the azimuthal collective flow in heavy-ion collisions.

Towards next-generation optical potentials for nuclear reactions and structure calculations

Optical-model potentials (OMPs) are critical ingredients for basic and applied nuclear physics. Present-day computational capabilities allow us to generate data-driven nucleon-nucleus OMPs that are non-local and exactly dispersive (as theoretically required to be), include statistically-sound uncertainty quantification, and are trained on both scattering and bound-state data from a wide area of the nuclear chart. Combined together, these features allow for significant improvement in fidelity and extrapolative power of the model. Here, we present preliminary work toward the development and training of such an OMP. The capability of the model to describe data at this first stage is encouraging.

What's new? An ab initio investigation of the 3 He-4He radiative capture into 7 Be

The 3 He$(α, γ)$ 7 Be radiative capture reaction plays an important role in the creation of elements in stars and in the production of solar neutrinos. It is difficult to experimentally measure this fusion cross section at energies relevant to solar processes because of Coulomb repulsion. Therefore, theory is needed to perform extrapolations from higher energies (where experimental fusion measurements are feasible) to the astrophysical regime. Here, we present the first microscopic calculations of 3 He$(α, γ)$ 7 Be with explicit inclusion of three-nucleon forces. With the incorporation of experimental bound-state and scattering information, our calculation of the astrophysical S factor agrees quantitatively with experimental data.

Shell effects in quasi-fission: Reactions forming actinide and superheavy compound nuclei

Quasi-fission occurs in fully damped heavy-ion collisions following a significant mass transfer between the fragments, without formation of a compound nucleus. As in fission, quasi-fission is expected to be affected by quantum effects leading to asymmetric mass splits. Quantum shells stabilising fission fragments with octupole shapes have been invoked as a factor determining the distribution of nucleons between the fragments at scission, explaining the fact that the centroid of the heavy fragment charge distribution is found around Z = 54 protons in fission and quasi-fission of actinides. These shell effects are studied in microscopic studies of quasi-fission. In particular, time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations have been performed for reactions forming actinides.

59 Co(p,X) spallation reaction cross sections for 250 MeV to 2 GeV protons

Cobalt is an advantageous target for probing the physics of nuclear spallation, because it is a naturally mono-isotopic element ( 59 Co), and its per-nucleon binding energy (BE/A = 8.768 MeV) is near the maximum value for all nuclei. We measured nuclear spallation cross sections for the 59 Co(p,X) reaction at five kinetic energies ranging from 250 MeV to 2 GeV. Cross sections for the production of 58 Co, 57 Co, 57 Mn, 56 Co, 56 Mn, 56 Cr, 55 Fe, 53 Fe, 54 Mn, 52 Mn, 51 Cr, 49 Cr, 48 V, 47 Sc, 46 Sc, 44 Sc, and 44 Scm are reported. Where comparable data exist in the EXFOR reaction database, we find that our measured cross sections generally agree. In many cases, we provide data for reactions or energies not currently reported in EXFOR. Our cross sections also provide evidence for the presence of α-clusters within the 59 Co nucleus, a surprising result given the asymmetry in Z (27) and N (32) for this nucleus. Finally, we use our measurements to evaluate the accuracy of spallation cross section simulations from GEANT4-based radiation transport toolkit, performed with the INCLXX-, Bertini-, and Binary-ion-cascade (BIC) based physics lists. This benchmarking activity revealed that the simulations overestimated the cross sections by a factor of ∼2–4 on average, and that the INCL-XX physics list provides the most reliable results. This evaluation informs the selection of the GEANT4 physics lists used for the analysis of data from NASA’s Psyche mission, which will measure γ rays and neutrons resulting from spallation reactions occurring on the surface of an asteroid whose surface is thought to be rich in iron-nickel metal.

On the canonical formulation of gauge field theories and Poincaré transformations

We address the Hamiltonian formulation of classical gauge field theories while putting forward results some of which are not entirely new, though they do not appear to be well known. We refer in particular to the fact that neither the canonical energy momentum vector ( P μ ) nor the gauge invariant energy momentum vector ( P inv μ ) do generate space-time translations of the gauge field by means of the Poisson brackets: In a general gauge, one has to consider the so-called kinematical energy momentum vector and, in a specific gauge (like the radiation gauge in electrodynamics), one has to consider the Dirac brackets rather than the Poisson brackets. Similar arguments apply to rotations and to Lorentz boosts and are of direct relevance to the “nucleon spin crisis” since the spin of the proton involves a contribution which is due to the angular momentum vector of gluons and thereby requires a proper treatment of the latter. We conclude with some comments on the relationships between the different approaches to quantization (canonical quantization based on the classical Hamiltonian formulation, Gupta-Bleuler, path integrals, BRST, covariant canonical approaches).

Direct WIMP detection rates for transitions in isomeric nuclei

The direct detection of dark matter constituents, in particular the weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), is central to particle physics and cosmology. In this paper we study WIMP induced transitions from isomeric nuclear states for two possible isomeric candidates: 180 Ta and 166 Ho. The experimental setup, which can measure the possible decay of 180 Ta induced by WIMPs, was proposed. The corresponding estimates of the half-life of 180 Ta are given in the sense that the WIMP-nucleon interaction can be interpreted as ordinary radioactive decay.

Transverse-momentum and event-shape dependence of D-meson flow harmonics in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV

The elliptic and triangular flow coefficients v 2 and v 3 of prompt D 0 , D + , and D * + mesons were measured at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.8 ) in Pb–Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays in the transverse momentum interval 1 < p T < 36 GeV / c in central (0–10%) and semi-central (30–50%) collisions. Compared to pions, protons, and J / ψ mesons, the average D-meson v n harmonics are compatible within uncertainties with a mass hierarchy for p T ≲ 3 GeV / c , and are similar to those of charged pions for higher p T . The coupling of the charm quark to the light quarks in the underlying medium is further investigated with the application of the event-shape engineering (ESE) technique to the D-meson v 2 and p T -differential yields. The D-meson v 2 is correlated with average bulk elliptic flow in both central and semi-central collisions. Within the current precision, the ratios of per-event D-meson yields in the ESE-selected and unbiased samples are found to be compatible with unity. All the measurements are found to be reasonably well described by theoretical calculations including the effects of charm-quark transport and the recombination of charm quarks with light quarks in a hydrodynamically expanding medium.

Beta decay of the axially asymmetric ground state of 192 Re

The β decay of 192 75 Re 117 , which lies near the boundary between the regions of predicted prolate and oblate deformations, has been investigated using the KEK Isotope Separation System (KISS) in RIKEN Nishina Center. This is the first case in which a low-energy beam of rhenium isotope has been successfully extracted from an argon gas-stopping cell using a laser-ionization technique, following production via multi-nucleon transfer between heavy ions. The ground state of 192 Re has been assigned J π = (0⁻) based on the observed β feedings and deduced logft values towards the 0⁺ and 2⁺ states in 192 Os, which is known as a typical γ-soft nucleus. Furthermore, the shape transition from axial symmetry to axial asymmetry in the Re isotopes is discussed from the viewpoint of single-particle structure using the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model.

First measurement of the |t|-dependence of coherent J/ψ photonuclear production

The first measurement of the cross section for coherent J/ψ photoproduction as a function of |t|, the square of the momentum transferred between the incoming and outgoing target nucleus, is presented. The data were measured with the ALICE detector in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02TeV with the J/ψ produced in the central rapidity region |y|<0.8, which corresponds to the small Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10 -3 . The measured |t|-dependence is not described by computations based only on the Pb nuclear form factor, while the photonuclear cross section is better reproduced by models including shadowing according to the leading-twist approximation, or gluon-saturation effects from the impact-parameter dependent Balitsky–Kovchegov equation. These new results are therefore a valid tool to constrain the relevant model parameters and to investigate the transverse gluonic structure at very low Bjorken-x.

First measurement of coherent ρ 0 photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV

The first measurement of the coherent photoproduction of ρ 0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV is presented. This result, together with previous HERA γ p data and γ –Pb measurements from ALICE, describes the atomic number ( A ) dependence of this process, which is particularly sensitive to nuclear shadowing effects and to the approach to the black-disc limit of QCD at a semi-hard scale. The cross section of the Xe + Xe → ρ 0 + Xe + Xe process, measured at midrapidity through the decay channel ρ 0 → π + π – , is found to be d σ / d y = 131.5 ± 5.6 ( stat . ) – 16.9 + 17.5 ( syst . ) mb. The ratio of the continuum to resonant contributions for the production of pion pairs is also measured. In addition, the fraction of events accompanied by electromagnetic dissociation of either one or both colliding nuclei is reported. The dependence on A of cross section for the coherent ρ 0 photoproduction at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of the γA system of W γ A , n = 65 GeV is found to be consistent with a power-law behaviour σ ( γ A → ρ 0 A ) ∝ A α with a slope α = 0.96 ± 0.02 ( syst . ) . This slope signals important shadowing effects, but it is still far from the behaviour expected in the black-disc limit.

Υ production and nuclear modification at forward rapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of Υ mesons in Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is measured with the muon spectrometer of the ALICE detector at the LHC. The yields as well as the nuclear modification factors are determined in the forward rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4.0, as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. The results show that the production of the Υ(1S) meson is suppressed by a factor of about three with respect to the production in proton– proton collisions. For the first time, a significant signal for the Υ(2S) meson is observed at forward rapidity, indicating a suppression stronger by about a factor 2–3 with respect to the ground state. The measurements are compared with transport, hydrodynamic, comover and statistical hadronisation model calculations.

Kaon–proton strong interaction at low relative momentum via femtoscopy in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC

In quantum scattering processes between two particles, aspects characterizing the strong and Coulomb forces can be observed in kinematic distributions of the particle pairs. The sensitivity to the interaction potential reaches a maximum at low relative momentum and vanishing distance between the two particles. Ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC provide an abundant source of many hadron species and can be employed as a measurement method of scattering parameters that is complementary to scattering experiments. This study confirms that momentum correlations of particles produced in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC provide an accurate measurement of kaon–proton scattering parameters at low relative momentum, allowing precise access to the K – p $\rightarrow$ K – p process. This work also validates the femtoscopic measurement in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions as an alternative to scattering experiments and a complementary tool to the study of exotic atoms with comparable precision. In this work, the first femtoscopic measurement of momentum correlations of K – p (K + $\bar{p}$) and K + p (K – $\bar{p}$) pairs in Pb–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =5.02 TeV registered by the ALICE experiment is reported. The components of the K – p complex scattering length are extracted and found to be $\mathfrak{R}$f 0 = -0.91±0.03(stat)$^{+0.17}_{-0.03}$(syst) and $\mathfrak{T}$f 0 =0.92±0.05(stat)$^{+0.12}_{-0.33}$(syst). The results are compared with chiral effective field theory predictions as well as with existing data from dedicated scattering and exotic kaonic atom experiments.

Spectroscopy of the T = 2 mirror nuclei 48 Fe/ 48 Ti using mirrored knockout reactions

A sequence of excited states has been established for the first time in the proton-rich nucleus 48 Fe (Z=26, N=22). The technique of mirrored (i.e. analogue) one-nucleon knockout reactions was applied, in which the T z = ±2 mirror pair, 48 Fe/ 48 Ti were populated via one-neutron/one-proton knockout from the secondary beams 49 Fe/ 49 V, respectively. The analogue properties of the reactions were used to help establish the new level scheme of 48 Fe. The inclusive and exclusive cross sections were determined for the populated states. Large differences between the cross sections for the two mirrored reactions were observed and have been interpreted in terms of different degrees of binding of the mirror nuclei and in the context of the recent observations of suppression of spectroscopic strength as a function of nuclear binding, for knockout reactions on light solid targets. Mirror energy differences (MED) have been determined between the analogue T = 2 states and compared with the shell model predictions. MED for this mirror pair, due to their location in the shell, are especially sensitive to excitations out of the f 7/2 shell, and present a stringent test of the shell-model prescription.

Light nuclei collectivity from s NN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, 3He, 4He) produced in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

Beam-spin asymmetry Σ for Σ – hyperon photoproduction off the neutron

We report a new measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}$ for the $\vec{\gamma} n \rightarrow K^+\Sigma^-$ reaction using quasi-free neutrons in a liquid-deuterium target. The new dataset includes data at previously unmeasured photon energy and angular ranges, thereby providing new constraints on partial wave analyses used to extract properties of the excited nucleon states. The experimental data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), housed in Hall B of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The CLAS detector measured reaction products from a liquid-deuterium target produced by an energy-tagged, linearly polarised photon beam with energies in the range 1.1 to 2.3 GeV. Predictions from an isobar model indicate strong sensitivity to $N(1720)3/2^+$, $\Delta(1900)1/2^-$, and $N(1895)1/2^-$, with the latter being a state not considered in previous photoproduction analyses. When our data are incorporated in the fits of partial-wave analyses, one observes significant changes in $\gamma$-$n$ couplings of the resonances which have small branching ratios to the $\pi N$ channel.

Measurement of prompt D s + -meson production and azimuthal anisotropy in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV

The production yield and angular anisotropy of prompt $D^{+}_{s}$ mesons were measured as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) in Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. $D^{+}_{s}$ mesons and their charge conjugates were reconstructed at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) from their hadronic decay channel $D^{+}_{s}$ → φπ + , with φ → K - K + , in the p T intervals 2 < p T < 50 GeV/c and 2 < p T < 36 GeV/c for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality intervals. For p T > 10 GeV/c, the measured $D^{+}_{s}$ -meson nuclear modification factor R AA is consistent with the one of non-strange D mesons within uncertainties, while at lower pT a hint for a $D^{+}_{s}$ -meson R AA larger than that of non-strange D mesons is seen. The enhanced production of $D^{+}_{s}$ relative to non- strange D mesons is also studied by comparing the pT-dependent $D^{+}_{s}$ /D 0 production yield ratios in Pb–Pb and in pp collisions. The ratio measured in Pb–Pb collisions is found to be on average higher than that in pp collisions in the interval 2 < p T < 8 GeV/c with a significance of 2.3σ and 2.4σ for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality intervals. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient v2 of prompt $D^{+}_{s}$ mesons was measured in Pb–Pb collisions in the 30–50% centrality interval and is found to be compatible with that of non-strange D mesons. The main features of the measured RAA, $D^{+}_{s}$ /D 0 ratio, and v 2 as a function of p T are described by theoretical calculations of charm-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding quark–gluon plasma including hadronisation via charm-quark recombination with light quarks from the medium. The p T -integrated production yield of $D^{+}_{s}$ mesons is compatible with the prediction of the statistical hadronisation model.

Investigating the role of strangeness in baryon–antibaryon annihilation at the LHC

Annihilation dynamics plays a fundamental role in the baryon–antibaryon interaction ($B–\bar{B}$) at low-energy and its strength and range are crucial in the assessment of possible baryonic bound states. Experimental data on annihilation cross sections are available for the $p–\bar{p}$ system but not in the low relative momentum region. Data regarding the $B–\bar{B}$ interaction with strange degrees of freedom are extremely scarce, hence the modeling of the annihilation contributions is mainly based on nucleon–antinucleon ($N–\bar{N}$) results, when available. In this letter we present a measurement of the $p–\bar{p}$, $p–\bar{Λ}$⊕$p–{Λ}$ and $Λ–\bar{Λ}$ interaction using correlation functions in the relative momentum space in high-multiplicity triggered pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV recorded by ALICE at the LHC. In the $p–\bar{p}$ system the couplings to the mesonic channels in different partial waves are extracted by adopting a coupled-channel approach with recent χEFT potentials. The inclusion of these inelastic channels provides good agreement with the data, showing a significant presence of the annihilation term down to zero momentum. Predictions obtained using the Lednický–Lyuboshits formula and scattering parameters obtained from heavy-ion collisions, hence mainly sensitive to elastic processes, are compared with the experimental $p–\bar{Λ}$⊕$p–{Λ}$ and $Λ–\bar{Λ}$ correlations. The model describes the $Λ–\bar{Λ}$ data and underestimates the $p–\bar{Λ}$⊕$p–{Λ}$ data in the region of momenta below 200 MeV/c. The observed deviation indicates a different contribution of annihilation channels to the two systems containing strange hadrons.
