Description and Genome Characterization of Three Novel Fungal Strains Isolated from Mars 2020 Mission-Associated Spacecraft Assembly Facility Surfaces—Recommendations for Two New Genera and One Species

National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) spacecraft assembly facilities are monitored for the presence of any bacteria or fungi that might conceivably survive a transfer to an extraterrestrial environment. Fungi present a broad and diverse range of phenotypic and functional traits to adapt to extreme conditions, hence the detection of fungi and subsequent eradication of them are needed to prevent forward contamination for future NASA missions. During the construction and assembly for the Mars 2020 mission, three fungal strains with unique morphological and phylogenetic properties were isolated from spacecraft assembly facilities. The reconstruction of phylogenetic trees based on several gene loci (ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB, TUB, TEF1) using multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and whole genome sequencing (WGS) analyses supported the hypothesis that these were novel species. Here we report the genus or species-level classification of these three novel strains via a polyphasic approach using phylogenetic analysis, colony and cell morphology, and comparative analysis of WGS. The strain FJI-L9-BK-P1 isolated from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Spacecraft Assembly Facility (JPL-SAF) exhibited a putative phylogenetic relationship with the strain Aaosphaeria arxii CBS175.79 but showed distinct morphology and microscopic features. Another JPL-SAF strain, FJII-L3-CM-DR1, was phylogenetically distinct from members of the family Trichomeriaceae and exhibited morphologically different features from the genera Lithohypha and Strelitziana. The strain FKI-L1-BK-DR1 isolated from the Kennedy Space Center facility was identified as a member of Dothideomycetes incertae sedis and is closely related to the family Kirschsteiniotheliaceae according to a phylogenetic analysis. The polyphasic taxonomic approach supported the recommendation for establishing two novel genera and one novel species. The names Aaosphaeria pasadenensis (FJI-L9-BK-P1 = NRRL 64424 = DSM 114621), Pasadenomyces melaninifex (FJII-L3-CM-DR1 = NRRL 64433 = DSM 114623), and Floridaphiala radiotolerans (FKI-L1-BK-DR1 = NRRL 64434 = DSM 114624) are proposed as type species. Furthermore, resistance to ultraviolet-C and presence of specific biosynthetic gene cluster(s) coding for metabolically active compounds are unique to these strains.

The Outburst of the Young Star Gaia19bey

We report photometry and spectroscopy of the outburst of the young stellar object Gaia19bey. We have established the outburst light curve with archival Gaia “G,” ATLAS “Orange,” Zwicky Transient Facility r-band, and Pan-STARRS “rizy”-filter photometry, showing an outburst of ~4 yr duration, longer than typical EX Lupi objects but shorter than FU Orionis objects. Its pre-outburst spectral energy distribution shows a flat far-infrared spectrum, confirming the early evolutionary state of Gaia19bey and its similarity to other deeply embedded young stars experiencing outbursts. A lower limit to the peak outburst luminosity is ~182 L{sub ⊙} at an assumed distance of 1.4 kpc, the minimum plausible distance. Infrared and optical spectroscopy near maximum light show an emission line spectrum, including H i lines, strong red Ca ii emission, other metal emission lines, infrared CO bandhead emission, and a strong infrared continuum. Toward the end of the outburst, the emission lines have all but disappeared and the spectrum has changed into an almost pure continuum spectrum. This indicates a cessation of magnetospheric accretion activity. The near-infrared colors have become redder as Gaia19bey has faded, indicating a cooling of the continuum component. Near the end of the outburst, the only remaining strong emission lines are forbidden shock-excited emission lines. Adaptive optics integral-field spectroscopy shows the H{sub 2} 1–0 S(1) emission with the morphology of an outflow cavity and the extended emission in the [Fe ii] line at 1644 nm with the morphology of an edge-on disk. However, we do not detect any large-scale jet from Gaia19bey.

Measurement report: Role of organic coating and chemical composition on ice nucleation potential of atmospheric particles in European Arctic

Understanding the ice nucleation (IN) potential of Arctic aerosols is critical for predicting their influence on cloud formation and water cycles in this vulnerable region. This study investigates the role of particle composition, organic coatings, and aerosol sources in modulating ice nucleating particle (INPs) abundance across five aerosol samples collected at the Gruvebadet Observatory Station in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. The IN potential of Arctic aerosol particles was studied by investigating chemical, morphological, and INP abundance measurements. Single-particle analyses revealed distinct differences in mixing state, organic volume fraction (OVF), and organic coating morphology across samples. OVF distributions were linked to particle origin, with marine-influenced Na-rich particles often exhibiting thin organic coatings, while long-range transported particles showed thicker organic coatings. Biogenic contributions, though variable, were linked to heat-sensitive INPs, suggesting a role for labile biological macromolecules under certain meteorological conditions. Spearman rank correlation analysis between particle composition and immersion-mode INP concentrations at two freezing temperatures indicated that organic-rich and Na-rich particles were positively associated with enhanced INP abundance. However, discrepancies in INP abundance were observed for particles with thicker organic coatings, where the morphological configuration of the organic material may play a role. The results highlight that Arctic INP variability is governed not only by chemical composition but also by the morphological configuration of organic material, which can either enhance or inhibit ice nucleation depending on its abundance, distribution, thickness, and mixing state. These findings underscore the combined influence of source regions, atmospheric processing, and organic–inorganic interactions in shaping Arctic aerosol freezing behavior.

Optimizing the Fabrication of Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane Using Fractional Factorial Design

Electrospinning, a simple and easily tunable technique that utilizes the force balance between the electrostatic force and the solution surface tension to fabricate membranes out of 1D nanostructured fibers, has garnered much interest especially from the nanotechnology community. Depending on the morphology of the fibers, electrospun membrane has found its way in a wide range of applications, such as oil-water separation, desalination, tissue engineering, and batteries. During an electrospinning process, many factors can affect the morphology of the products, such as viscosity of the solution, voltage supply, discharge distance, feed rate of the solution, and electrospinning time. In this work, we investigated the impacts of the most important parameters on the morphology of electrospun fibrous membrane based on the fractional factorial design. We evaluated the electrospun fibrous membrane morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and capillary flow porometry. Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) was chosen for the current study due to its interesting and versatile functionalities including superior hydrophobicity, high free volume, and piezoelectricity. This work provides valuable insight for the fabrication of electrospun membranes, especially for tailoring membrane properties in accordance with any targeted applications.

Impact of mixed grain size sediment input on braided river Morphodynamics: Insights from experimental and numerical modeling

The rate of sediment supply has significant impacts on river morphology, making it crucial to understand the geomorphic changes and grain size distribution dynamics in rivers. However, the effects of varying grain size sediment input on morphological changes in braided channels remain poorly understood. This study is the first to investigate the bar development and sediment sorting processes in braided channels with non-uniform sediment inputs using both numerical and experimental approaches. We applied a two-dimensional numerical model, Nays2DH to confirm and generalize experimental results. The model reproduced key experiment results, including 1) stream elevation changes, and 2) grain size distribution. Using this validated model, we explored the morphological changes and sorting process in a braided river with sediment inputs. The numerical experiments demonstrate that sediment input controls the elevation of the stream bed and the grain size distribution. Notably, both the elevation and grain-size distribution become relatively stable in downstream of the channel. Additionally, the simulation results suggest that an increased sediment supply leads to greater channel complexity, with bed surface armoring decreasing.

SIRT1 reduces epigenetic and non-epigenetic changes to maintain the quality of postovulatory aged oocytes in mice

Highlights: • The intensity of H3K9ac and H3K4me2/3 increased in postovulatory aged oocytes. • SIRT1 overexpression inhibited the increase of H3K9ac and H3K4me2/3. • SIRT1 overexpression ameliorated aging-induced epigenetic and non-epigenetic changes in oocytes. Postovulatory oocyte aging has a major influence on the development potential of embryos. Many antioxidants can delay oocyte aging by regulating the expression of SIRT1. However, there is a lack of knowledge on SIRT1 function in postovulatory oocyte aging. In vitro transcribed RNA of Sirt1 was injected into fresh oocytes to investigate the function of SIRT1 during postovulatory oocyte aging. In the present study, SIRT1 was found to be down-regulated in aged oocytes compared with fresh oocytes. Meanwhile the intensity of acetylation of H3K9 (H3K9ac) and H3K4 methylation increased in postovulatory aged oocytes. After the oocytes were injected with SIRT1 and aged for 12 h, the intensity of H3K9ac and H3K4 methylation markedly decreased compared with controls. Furthermore, SIRT1 overexpression also reduced the aging-induced oocyte morphological changes and reactive oxygen species accumulation, maintained the spindle normal morphology and attenuated the aging-associated abnormalities of mitochondrial function. The role of SIRT1 in protecting oocyte aging was diminished when oocytes with overexpressed SIRT1 were cultured with SIRT1 inhibitor EX-527. Briefly, these present results show that SIRT1 not only reduced the non-epigenetic changes such as abnormal oocyte morphology, ROS accumulation, spindle defects and mitochondrial dysfunctions but also regulated the epigenetic changes in order to maintain the quality of postovulatory aged oocytes.

Nanocomposites Based on Coil-Comb Diblock Copolymers

The polymer chain architecture is an important factor determining the phase behavior of nanoparticle (NP) assembly in polymer matrices. Block copolymers (BCPs) containing a random copolymer (RCP) block present a convenient variation on traditional BCPs to tune the interaction parameters between the polymer blocks and the nanofillers as well as to evaluate the effect of the chain architecture on the NP arrangements within BCP microdomains. Here, we synthesized BCPs with a coil polystyrene (PS) block and a comb RCP block through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The RCP block consists of methyl- and lauryl acrylates, the latter of which confers a long-chain alkyl moiety to favorably interact with alkyl-passivated NPs. BCPs showing lamellar, cylindrical, and mixed morphologies were obtained by varying the volume fractions of the RCP block (f RCP ). In comparison to coil-coil BCP, the coil-comb BCPs show highly asymmetric phase behavior with respect to fRCP, where lamellar morphologies were observed at fRCP from 0.31 to 0.51. NPs in the size of 4-5 nm were successfully incorporated in the RCP block of the BCPs with periodicities of 30-60 nm. An order-to-order phase transition from lamellae to PS cylinders was observed after the addition of only 1-2 vol % 5 nm NPs into the BCP with a periodicity of 25 nm and f RCP of 0.51. Self-consistent field theory-density functional theory simulations qualitatively described the observed morphologies and phase transitions in the nanocomposites. Here, the current study presents a platform to fabricate nanocomposites with NP assemblies in coil-comb BCPs that contain a random copolymer block and provides insight into how polymer chain architectures can affect the phase behavior of BCPs and nanocomposites.

Developing Efficient Benzene Additives for 19.43% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells by Crossbreeding Effect of Fluorination and Bromination

Employing volatile solid additives have emerged as a promising method to optimize the morphology and improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, principles governing the efficient design of solid additives remain elusive. In this work, the programmed fluorination and/or bromination on benzene core to develop efficient additives for OSCs is reported. The programmed fluorination and/or bromination endow the five halogen benzene derivatives, 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene, hexafluorobenzene, 1,3,5-tribromo-2,4,6-trifluorobenzene (TFTB), 1,3,5-tribromobenzene, and hexabromobenzene, with different melting and boiling points, volatility, as well as interactions with the host blend. Studies indicate that the additives with extremely high and low volatility are almost powerless and even detrimental to the morphology evolution. Among them, the combination of fluorine and bromine atoms on TFTB not only enables the more appropriate m.p./b.p. and volatility, but also exerts stronger molecular interactions with the host blend, giving rise to higher ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. Importantly, TFTB exhibits good universality to optimize the performances of OSCs with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs; over 18%) in a group of binary blend systems, and an impressive PCE of 19.43% in the ternary PBTz-F:PM6:L8-BO system.

Sequential Deposition of Multicomponent Bulk Heterojunctions Increases Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells

Constructing tandem and multi-blend organic solar cells (OSCs) is an effective way to overcome the absorption limitations of conventional single-junction devices. However, these methods inevitably require tedious multilayer deposition or complicated morphology-optimization procedures. Herein, sequential deposition is utilized as an effective and simple method to fabricate multicomponent OSCs with a double-bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure of the active layer to further improve photovoltaic performance. Two efficient donor-acceptor pairs, D18-Cl:BTP-eC9 and PM6:L8-BO, are sequentially deposited to form the D18-Cl:BTP-eC9/PM6:L8-BO double-BHJ active layer. In these double-BHJ OSCs, light absorption is significantly improved, and optimal morphology is also retained without requiring a more complicated morphology optimization involved in quaternary blends. Compared to the quaternary blend devices, energy loss (E loss ) is also reduced by rationally matching each donor with an appropriate acceptor. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is improved from 18.25% for D18-Cl:BTP-eC9 and 18.69% for PM6:L8-BO based binary blend OSCs to 19.61% for the double-BHJ OSCs. In contrast, a D18-Cl:PM6:L8-BO:BTP-eC9 quaternary blend of OSCs exhibited a dramatically reduced PCE of 15.83%. Finally, these results demonstrate that a double-BHJ strategy, with a relatively simple processing procedure, can potentially enhance the device performance of OSCs and lead to more widespread use.

Dynamics of High Molecular Weight Cylindrical and Lamellar Block Copolymers with X‐ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy

Here, the structure and dynamics of polystyrene (PS)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers (BCPs) are studied. The BCPs exhibit microphase-separated cylindrical and lamellar morphologies. Structural dynamics are measured with X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy in the small-angle regime. Morphologies and domain sizes are evaluated using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Different solvent processing conditions are investigated. Grain sizes evaluated using SAXS are found to depend on processing only for the rubbery majority BCP. The structural relaxation times are examined as a function of PS volume fraction, temperature, morphology, and structural sizes. Well above the glass transition temperature (T g ) of PS, all samples exhibit stretched autocorrelation decays and diffusive dynamics. Near T g of PS, the dynamics of all samples are anomalous with compressed autocorrelation decays and hyperdiffusive dynamics. This transition occurs at 153 °C or 1.13 T g of PS. In the diffusive regime (at high temperature), structural relaxation times are dependent on the processing method. Near PS T g (at low temperature), structural relaxation times scale with the PS volume fraction. Structural relaxation times do not correlate with grain size, indicating that the out-of-equilibrium state of PS dominates the structural dynamics of these strongly phase-segregated BCPs.

Sediment transport and morphodynamic changes due to upstream variation and sea level rise on the Western Mekong Delta, Vietnam

The hydrological and morphological dynamics across the Vietnam Mekong Delta (VMD) coastline are increasingly shaped by human interventions and climate change, affecting the sustainability of socio-economic environments. This study employs the TELEMAC-MASCARET modeling system (TELEMAC-2D, TOMAWAC, and SISYPHE modules) to simulate hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and morphological changes for a 10-year period under baseline (SC1) and future climate (SC2) scenarios, considering wave climatology of Northeast (NEM) and Southwest monsoons (SWM). The results of sedimentation and erosion were analyzed across five key coastal zones from Ca Mau Cape (KV1) to Ha Tien (KV5). Model results highlight distinct seasonal patterns of sediment redistribution shaped by monsoonal flows, wave action, and seabed morphology. During the NEM, sediment deposition is concentrated near estuarine zones, while the SWM favors offshore sediment accumulation due to perpendicular wave actions, and shallow, gently sloping bathymetry that dissipates wave energy. Coastal erosion predominantly occurs at convex shoreline features subjected to stronger coastal currents, particularly in fine-grained sediment areas. Under future sea level rise and land subsidence scenarios, reduced flow velocities lead to lower bottom shear stress, promoting deposition and mitigating erosion problems despite increased wave energy. Besides that, sediment transport analyses across 14 cross-sections (C-S) reveal a southward trend during the NEM and a northward reversal during the SWM, with upstream sediment reductions primarily influencing near-estuarine zones and exerting minimal impact beyond the mid-coastal regions. Furthermore, these findings advance the understanding of sediment redistribution processes under climate change and seasonal change, and provide a scientific basis for adaptive coastal management and sustainable development.

Dimensionality effect of conductive carbon fillers in LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 cathode

Developing advanced electrode architectures through modifying active materials, conductive fillers, binders, and electrolytes as well as processing methods has drawn significant research interest. Due to the insufficient electrical conductivity of many active materials, adding conductive carbon fillers to composite electrodes provides the necessary electrical conductivity. The dimensionality effect among different conductive fillers has a significant impact on electrochemistry, which can be associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities of electrodes. In this study, synchrotron X-ray mosaic nanotomography and X-ray spectroscopy nanoimaging provided direct three-dimensional (3D) visualization and quantification capabilities to investigate the dimensionality effects of Super P (SP) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fillers on the capacity retention of LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 (NMC111). The results indicate that NMC/SWCNT electrodes, with a wrapping effect from the SWCNTs, exhibited more homogeneous particle size distributions, morphological changes, and chemical states than NMC/SP electrodes, without the wrapping effect. This work developed a framework of 3D quantification methods to study the capacity fading behavior associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities and paved the way toward designing electrodes for high rate energy storage applications.

Drastically different restructuring of airborne and surface-anchored soot aggregates

Combustion soot particles are fractal aggregates of hydrophobic spherules. Mixing of soot particles with other chemicals during atmospheric processing may partially offset their hydrophobicity, promoting water uptake and structural compaction. Here, we investigated morphological changes in fractal soot particles coated by sulfuric acid and then humidified, both in airborne and surface-bound states. Airborne soot was probed by tandem differential mobility analysis. Surface-bound soot was studied in a controlled microenvironment of a closed cell, using environmental transmission electron microscopy. After humidification, the airborne particles became fully compact, but the deposited particles showed only minor morphological changes despite significant water uptake. Although minor, those changes were detected during both water condensation and evaporation, indicating that condensation-evaporation cycles play an important role in atmospheric soot compaction. Lesser restructuring of deposited aggregates was caused by surface anchoring and coating loss, making anchoring an indispensable tool for preserving morphology of aggregates against changing experimental environment.

Multiple-charging effects on the CCN activity and hygroscopicity of surrogate black carbon particles

Accurate measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity and hygroscopicity of black carbon (BC)-containing particles are particularly important because of the positive climate forcing from these particles. Such measurements are typically conducted on particles selected by a Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA), which in addition to singly charged particles transmits multiply charged larger particles that have the same electrical mobility. These larger particles activate at lower supersaturations than the singly charged particles, biasing measurements and resulting in overestimation of CCN activity and hygroscopicity parameter (κ). Here, we measure the CCN activity and determine κ for different BC surrogates with electrical mobility diameters from 100 to 200 nm selected 1) only by electrical mobility with a DMA, and 2) by both electrical mobility and mass using a DMA and a Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer (CPMA), thus allowing selection of only singly charged particles. We demonstrate the use of the DMA-CPMA system in resolving biases caused by multiply charged particles, and we show that the effect of multiple charging on the CCN activity of the BC particles is strongly influenced by morphology dispersion, i.e., the variability due to the range of morphologies of particles that have the same electrical mobility and mass. Finally, our findings show that electrical mobility-based methods alone are unlikely to lead to accurate results in measurements of CCN activation and hygroscopicity of BC particles, even for those with a more compact morphology.

Mechanisms of ion irradiation induced ordering in amorphous TiO 2 nanotubes: Effects of ion mass and energy

Here, amorphous TiO 2 nanotubes were irradiated in-situ in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) with Kr + ions at energies of 46 keV, 150 keV, and 1 MeV and with 46 keV Xe + ions, to investigate the structural and morphological evolution of the nanotubes under irradiation. At all irradiation conditions, amorphous TiO 2 nanotubes exhibited significant morphological instability, and tended to undergo volumetric swelling with increasing ion counts, often until collapse of the original nanotube structure. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirmed that irradiation-induced defects can explain the observed swelling. Structurally, nanotubes remain amorphous following all Kr + irradiation conditions, but irradiation with 46 keV Xe + leads to the formation of anatase nanocrystallites. Importantly, through systematically varying ion energy and ion species, we try to elucidate the influence of nuclear and electronic stopping power on ion irradiation induced changes. By contextualizing these results within the existing literature, we propose that the observed changes in TiO 2 nanotube morphology and structure could be due to a competition between two mechanisms: (1) disorder-induced swelling and (2) irradiation-induced amorphous-to-crystalline transformation.

Solid additive engineering enables high-efficiency and eco-friendly all-polymer solar cells

Currently, morphology optimization of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) strongly depends on the use of solvent additives, which are usually highly toxic and harmful to the environment and human health. Here, we report a green and volatile solid additive, 2-methoxynaphthalene (2-MN). It was found that the incorporation of 2-MN into a PM6:PY-DT blend can effectively manipulate the aggregations of PM6 and PY-DT during film depositing and thermal annealing processes and results in highly ordered molecular packing and favorable phase-separated morphology. Consequently, a record-high efficiency of 17.32% is achieved for the PM6:PY-DT device. Moreover, 2-MN-processed all-PSCs were fabricated by using non-halogenated solvent. High efficiencies of 17.03% and 16.67% are obtained for all-PSCs fabricated under nitrogen atmosphere and ambient conditions, respectively. Finally, our work shows that the utilization of 2-MN as a green and solid additive is a simple and feasible strategy to optimize the morphology and sheds new light on eco-friendly fabrication and application of all-PSCs.

Hierarchically structured metal carbides as conductive fillers in thermo-responsive polymer nanocomposites for battery safety

Integrating thermo-responsive polymer switching materials (TRPS) into lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been recognized as one of the most effective strategies to prevent thermal runaway under various abuse scenarios. However, the current methods to obtain TRPS cannot satisfy different practical applications. Herein, we develop a versatile strategy for the preparation of various metal carbides (e.g., tungsten carbide, molybdenum carbide) with controllable hierarchical structure that is featured with surface protrusion structure, which is critical for high conductivity and rapid thermal response. Systematic studies of the phase and morphology evolutions by advanced characterizations illustrate that the reducing agent and reduction rate are critical for developing the specific morphology. In conclusion, by using the above-mentioned carbides as the conductive fillers of TRPS, the resulting TRPS with a specially controlled shape exhibits over 5 order of conductivity improvement compared with common carbides with particulate morphology, in addition to reversible shutdown performance and effective thermal abuse protections toward safe LIB operation.
