Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO 3 , a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO 3 and confirmed the presence of magnon damping with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. It offers new insights and understanding of the impurity effects in a broad class of noncollinear magnetic systems.

Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) is one of the dominant cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. In this study a simple, efficient and scalable surface doping technique is successfully demonstrated, which can be readily used in mass production of cathode materials. For the first time neodymium oxide (Nd 2 O 3 ) has been employed as the surface doping agent. The Nd-doped NMC shows greatly improved cycling and rate performance, and the enhanced cycling stability has been demonstrated in full pouch cells, with a 17.5% increase in capacity retention after 300 cycles. Fewer cracks have been observed in the doped NMC after cycling, and in situ X-ray diffraction reveals the suppressed lattice collapse by Nd doping. Greatly suppressed surface phase change has been confirmed by HR-TEM and EELS. The result suggests great promise in using this dry doping technique to enhance the electrochemical performance of NMC cathodes.

Although the two active redox centers in Li-rich cathodes, including the anionic and cationic contributions, can enable Li-ion batteries to achieve outstanding specific energy, their behaviors at different current densities have not been clarified. In this report we provide a comparative study of transition metals (TMs) and oxygen redox activities by directly accessing their oxidation states in Li-rich materials operated at very different current rates. Our data reveal that the oxidation of oxygen in the near-surface region is at the same level for electrodes cycled with a wide range of current rates, indicating a reaction gradient of lattice oxygen redox reactions. The oxidation process of lattice oxygen is found to be dynamically compatible with that of the TMs. Combining the results of first principles calculations and complementary experimental findings, we propose a detailed mechanism of structural distortion from octahedral Li to tetrahedral Li and the role of oxygen vacancy in Li + diffusion. It is found that fast delithiation occurring at high current densities can easily cause local structural transformation, leading to a limited Li + diffusion rate and consequently suppressing rate capability.
The insertion of strain re-seeding CeO 2 layers allows for thick growth of strain-dependent Aurivillius supercell phases.
A systematic methodology for the quantification of lithium inventory is developed and the degradation mechanisms of high-voltage lithium batteries are revealed.
The novelty of this study includes correlating stress with the complex structural transformation and volume changes in sodium-ion battery cathodes.
γ-ray production cross sections have been deduced for reactions with incident neutrons having energies from 1.5 - 4.7 MeV. Similar measurements were made on a natural Ti sample to establish an absolute normalization. The resulting γ-ray production cross sections are compared to TENDL and TALYS calculations, as well as data from previous measurements. The models are found to describe the production cross sections for most γ rays observed from 54Mn and 54Fe rather well.

M n+1 AX n phases exhibit unique laminated atomic structures that result in properties typical of both ceramics and metals. Due to their unusual characteristics, these materials have been proposed for use in a wide variety of industrial applications, including in nuclear reactors—both fission and fusion systems—where they will be exposed to extreme irradiation conditions and high temperatures. Recently, numerous studies have investigated radiation effects on the M n+1 AX n phases, revealing complex behavior—phase transformations, surface modification, and mechanical property changes—induced by ion or neutron irradiation over a range of temperatures. This review summarizes recent experimental and theoretical work on the response of the M n+1 AX n phases to irradiation and discusses the intrinsic controls on the radiation tolerance of these materials. Based on the review of the present body of work, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of irradiation-induced structural modification and defect evolution in M n+1 AX n phases is developed, as well as proposed strategies for designing novel M n+1 AX n phases with enhanced performance under extreme irradiation conditions.

Noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn has attracted wide interest as it is a candidate for Weyl semimetal. Here, we report the observation of topological Hall like signals in Mn3Sn/Pt bilayers grown on Al 2 O 3 (0001). X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy results confirm the high epitaxial quality of the c-axis-oriented Mn3Sn films. The detected topological Hall resistivity shows a broad temperature range from 210 to 365 K by tuning the thickness of Mn3Sn from 3 to 15 nm. Compared with previously reported topological Hall effects in Mn3Sn at temperatures below 50 K, the observed high-temperature topological Hall signal is likely due to the stabilization of topological spin textures enabled by the strong spin–orbit coupling of the Pt overlayer and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction at the Mn3Sn/Pt interface.
The magnetic Weyl semimetallic state can lead to intriguing magnetotransport, such as chiral anomaly and the layered quantum Hall effect. Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge) is a noncollinear antiferromagnetic semimetal where a Weyl semimetallic state is stabilized by time-reversal symmetry breaking. Compared to the well-studied Mn3Sn, the Weyl fermion-induced magnetotransport in Mn3Ge has been merely studied. Here, we report an in-depth study on the magnetotransport in a microfabricated Mn3Ge single crystal from room temperature to 10 K. We reveal an anomalous anisotropic magnetoresistance with fourfold symmetry and a positive high-field longitudinal magnetoresistance below the critical temperature (160–170 K). The possible origin is the temperature-induced tilting of the Weyl nodes. Our study helps to understand the magnetotransport properties in the Weyl fermion system.
