Thermal insulation attaching means

An improved isolation system is provided for attaching ceramic tiles of insulating material to the surface of a structure to be protected against extreme temperatures of the nature expected to be encountered by the space shuttle orbiter. This system isolates the fragile ceramic tiles from thermally and mechanically induced vehicle structural strains. The insulating tiles are affixed to a felt isolation pad formed of closely arranged and randomly oriented fibers by means of a flexible adhesive and in turn the felt pad is affixed to the metallic vehicle structure by an additional layer of flexible adhesive.

Sialons as high temperature insulators

Sialons were evaluated for application as high temperature electrical insulators in contact with molybdenum and tungsten components in hard vacuum applications. Both D.C. and variable frequency A.C. resistivity data indicate the sialons to have electrical resistivity similar to common oxide in the 1000 C or higher range. Metallographic evaluations indicate good bonding of the type 15R ALN polytype to molybdenum and tungsten. The beta prime or modified silicon nitride phase was unacceptable in terms of vacuum stability. Additives effect on electrical resistivity. Similar resistivity decreases were produced by additions of molybdenum or tungsten to form cermets. The use of hot pressing at 1800 C with ALN, Al2 O3 and Si3N4 starting powders produced a better product than did a combination of SiO2 and AIN staring powders. It was indicated that sialons will be suitable insulators in the 1600K range in contact with molybdenum or tungsten if they are produced as a pure ceramic and subsequently bonded to the metal components at temperatures in the 1600K range.

Thermal insulation protection means

A system for providing thermal insulation for portions of a spacecraft which do not exceed 900 F during ascent or reentry relative to the earth's atmosphere is described. The thermal insulation is formed of relatively large flexible sheets of needled Nomex felt having a flexible waterproof coating. The thickness of the felt is sized to protect against projected temperatures and is attached to the structure by a resin adhesive. Vent holes in the sheets allow ventilation while maintaining waterproofing. The system is heat treated to provide thermal stability.

Effect of 25 cycles of launch pad exposure and simulated mission heating on space shuttle reusable surface insulation coated with reaction cured glass

Tiles of space shuttle reusable surface insulation coated with reaction cured glass were subjected to 25 cycles of launch pad exposure and simulated mission heating. The coating could not withstand the environment without cracking. Water absorption after cracking reached as high as 150 weight percent. Exposure of insulation fibers beneath the coating to contaminants dissolved in absorbed water initiated fiber degradation.

Reflecting layers reduce weight of insulation

Metalized films placed between layers of fibrous material maintain equivalent thermal conductivity while cutting blanket density in half. Tests indicate that insulation with 1 lb/cu ft density with goldized films has thermal conductivity equal to 2 lb/cu ft of conventional insulation. Concept reduces weight in commercial aircraft and increases cargo space.

Preliminary design procedure for insulated structures subjected to transient heating

Minimum-mass designs were obtained for insulated structural panels loaded by a general set of inplane forces and a time dependent temperature. Temperature and stress histories in the structure are given by closed-form solutions, and optimization of the insulation and structural thicknesses is performed by nonlinear mathematical programming techniques. Design calculations are described to evaluate the structural efficiency of eight materials under combined heating and mechanical loads: graphite/polyimide, graphite/epoxy, boron/aluminum, titanium, aluminum, Rene 41, carbon/carbon, and Lockalloy. The effect on design mass of intensity and duration of heating were assessed. Results indicate that an optimum structure may have a temperature response well below the recommended allowable temperature for the material.

Effects of soft foam insulation impact

High temperature reusable surface insulation (HTRSI) tiles were impacted by a variety of foam insulation materials typical of the debris expected to strike the shuttle orbiter during the initial phases of flight. Failure of the HIRSI coating was strongly dependent on the density and size of the projectile. The failure threshold was as low as 140 ft/sec for rubber and as high as 740 ft/sec for styrofoam. In addition, the impact pressure was measured for a variety of debris materials as a function of velocity.

Measurement of loss angle, volume resistivity and surface resistivity of insulating materials used on solar cells

The complete measuring and test system developed to measure the quality and the stability of insulating materials used on solar cell arrays for space application is described. The test set up and measurements are primarily aimed at the measurement and analysis of the degradation of the electrical insulating properties of material used on solar cells. Degradation characteristics of the material subject to thermal cycling, space plasma and very high electrical fields individually and in combination can be investigated.

Cork-resin ablative insulation for complex surfaces and method for applying the same

A method of applying cork-resin ablative insulation material to complex curved surfaces is disclosed. The material is prepared by mixing finely divided cork with a B-stage curable thermosetting resin, forming the resulting mixture into a block, B-stage curing the resin-containing block, and slicing the block into sheets. The B-stage cured sheet is shaped to conform to the surface being insulated, and further curing is then performed. Curing of the resins only to B-stage before shaping enables application of sheet material to complex curved surfaces and avoids limitations and disadvantages presented in handling of fully cured sheet material.

Durability of foam insulation for LH2 fuel tanks of future subsonic transports

Organic foams were tested to determine their suitability for insulating liquid hydrogen tanks of subsonic aircraft. The specimens, including nonreinforced foams and foams with chopped glass reinforcements, flame retardants, and vapor barriers, were scaled to simulate stress conditions in large tanks. The tests were conducted within aluminum tank compartments filled with liquid hydrogen and the boil-off rate was used as the criterion of thermal performance. It was found that while all insulations deteriorated with increased cycles, two nonreinforced polyurethane foams showed no structural deterioration after 4200 thermal cycles (equivalent to 15 years of airline service). It was also found that fiberglass reinforcement and flame retardants impaired thermal performance and reduced useful life of the foams. Vapor barriers enhanced structural integrity without any deterioration in thermal properties.

Analysis and design of insulation systems for LH2-fueled aircraft

An analytical program was conducted to evaluate the performance of 15 potential insulations for the fuel tanks of a subsonic LH2-fueled transport aircraft intended for airline service in the 1990-1995 time period. As a result, two candidate insulation systems are proposed for subsonic transport aircraft applications. Both candidates are judged to be the optimum available and should meet the design requirements. However, because of the long-life cyclic nature of the application and the cost sensitivity of airline operations, an experimental tank/insulation development or proof-of-concept program is recommended. This program should be carried out with a nearly full-scale system which would be subjected to the cyclic thermal and mechanical inputs anticipated in aircraft service.

Installing fiber insulation

A method for installing fragile, high temperature insulation batting in an elongated cavity or in a resilient wire sleeve to form a resilient seal. The batting is preformed to rough dimensions and wrapped in a plastic film, the film being of a material which is fugitive at a high temperature. The film is heat sealed and trimmed to form a snugly fit skin which overlaps at least at one end to permit attachment of a pull cord. The film absorbs the tensile force of pulling the film enclosed batting through the cavity or wire mesh sleeve and is subsequently driven off by high temperature baking, leaving only the insulation in the cavity or wire mesh sleeve.

Study for fabrication, evaluation, and testing of monolayer woven type materials for space suit insulation

An alternative space suit insulation concept using a monolayer woven pile material is discussed. The material reduces cost and improves the durability of the overgarment, while providing protection similar to that provided by multilayer insulation (MLI). Twelve samples of different configurations were fabricated and tested for compressibility and thermal conductivity as a function of compression loading. Two samples which showed good results in the initial tests were further tested for thermal conductivity with respect to ambient pressure and temperature. Results of these tests were similar to results of the MLI tests, indicating the potential of the monolayer fabric to replace the present MLI. A seaming study illustrated that the fabric can be sewn in a structurally sound seam with minimal heat loss. It is recommended that a prototype thermal meteroid garment be fabricated.

Comparative evaluation of insulating properties of plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings

A simple method for evaluating the thermal insulating capability of ceramic coatings was devised. It is based on monitoring the temperature of the uncoated back surface of a thin superalloy disk while its front surface, coated with the ceramic material, is exposed to the high-temperature environment of an electric muffle furnace. The results obtained indicate that zirconia containing 8 wt% Y2O3 is a better thermal insulator than barium zirconate or calcium orthosilicate.

Evacuation-induced pressure differentials in multilayer insulation systems

The pressure differentials induced across three types of multilayer insulation systems during evacuation have been measured and compared with values predicted using an idealized parallel plate geometric model. The systems tested were double-aluminized Mylar with a Tissuglas or silk net spacer and crinkled single-aluminized Mylar. Test samples were circular. The influence of purge gas type, layer density, sample diameter, and temperature was systematically investigated. The experimental approach was to measure the absolute pressure history and corresponding pressure differential induced across the insulation during evacuation. The measured pressure differentials were nondimensionalized and compared with those predicted by the parallel plate model as a function of Knudsen number. It was concluded that the parallel plate model is adequate for making engineering analyses. The influence of all parameters, except layer density, is well represented by the model. Representation of the influence of layer density is less satisfactory, but can be improved by modification of the flat plate model to allow for the more obvious practical nonidealities, such as crinkling, or the presence of a net spacer.

Electron penetration of spacecraft thermal insulation

The external thermal blanket with 13 mils of polyethylene which has the known range and stopping power as a function of electron energy is investiated. The most recent omnidirectional peak Jovian electron flux at 5 Jupiter radii is applied, the electron current penetrating the thermal blanket is calculated and allowed to impinge on a typical 20 mil polyethylene insulator surrounding a wire. The radiation dose rate to the insulator is then calculated and the electrical conductivity found. The results demonstrate that the increased electronic mobility is sufficient to keep the maximum induced electric field two orders of magnitude below the critical breakdown strength.

High temperature (Al2O3) insulation and light weight conductors

The of an aluminum conductor with an aluminum oxide insulation film was investigated. Aluminum oxide insulated wire or strip (with a melting point of 2050 C) is unique for applications in the electronic, missile, atomic reactor, aerospace, and aircraft industries. The oxide film is highly flexible, suitable for all windings of any size and shape of coil (magnetic). Briefly touched upon are the ultraviolet, proton gamma radiation uses, as well as high vacuum and cryogenic applications. Since the film is inorganic and chemically inert, it does not age or deteriorate in storage and has good dielectric properties (1000 volts per mil).
