Using kernel-based statistical distance to study the dynamics of charged particle beams in particle-based simulation codes

Measures of discrepancy between probability distributions (statistical distance) are widely used in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning. We describe how certain measures of statistical distance can be implemented as numerical diagnostics for simulations involving charged-particle beams. Related measures of statistical dependence are also described. The resulting diagnostics provide sensitive measures of dynamical processes important for beams in nonlinear or high-intensity systems, which are otherwise difficult to characterize. Here, the focus is on kernel-based methods such as maximum mean discrepancy, which have a well-developed mathematical foundation and reasonable computational complexity. Several benchmark problems and examples involving intense beams are discussed. While the focus is on charged-particle beams, these methods may also be applied to other many-body systems such as plasmas or gravitational systems.

Initial Development of Variable Design Lifetimes and Creep-Fatigue Evaluations for ASME Section III, Division 5, Class B Code Rules

This report summarizes the initial development of new ASME Section III, Division 5, Class B rules to address the gaps identified for new high temperature reactor designs. The overall objective is to introduce the design-by-analysis approach, the variable design lifetimes for primary load design, and the strain limits and creep-fatigue damage evaluations for Class B components. It is also desired that the new evaluation procedures do not require stress classification and stress linearization. Further, the data requirements to support the development of design parameters for the new Class B rules would not be overly burdensome, and less extensive than those supporting Class A rules. We have identified the Elastic, Perfectly Plastic (EPP) method as the design by-analysis approach for primary load design, and developed allowable stress criteria for variable design lifetimes, up to 500,000 hours, that only require data typical for the allowable stresses in Section II, Part D, Tables 1A and 1B. We have also adapted the elastic analysis approach from HBB-T-1400 and Section III, Mandatory Appendix XIII, XIII-2400 and XIII-3520(e) for the new Class B creep-fatigue evaluation procedure. A new elastic follow-up-based Isochronous Stress Strain Curve (ISSC) stress relaxation procedure has been developed to provide adequate conservatism commensurate with Class B constructions. No stress classification and stress linearization are required in the new procedure. Future work needed to complete the development is also summarized.

GCR: Class B Code Case

This PowerPoint presentation is for Joint ART Materials/AMMT Program Review, Germantown, MD, on June-5-8, 2023. It will discuss development to revamp the ASME Section III Division 5 Class B design rules. There will be a plan in the FY24 to assess extrapolation methods for other Class A materials, alternative strain range evaluations for fatigue damage, evaluation of Class B intersection point in D-diagram relative to material-specific Class A intersection points, and evaluation of new Class B rules against Class A rules based on Elastic-Perfectly Plastic (EPP) methodology and full inelastic analysis method, using sample problems.

3D spherical functional expansion tallies in Serpent 2 Monte Carlo code

This work extends the application of functional expansion tallies to 3D spherical geometries. The 3D Zernike polynomials are set as an orthonormal polynomials basis for the functional reconstruction. The study describes the construction of the complete set of polynomials, a natural expansion of the spherical harmonics polynomials where 3D Zernike moments can be evaluated as a linear combination of the geometrical moments. The 3D Zernike polynomials formulation and the computational approach implemented in Serpent 2 are presented and tested through the Godiva model from the ICSBEP criticality benchmark test cases. The implementation results are in agreement with a reference solution described in a fine-resolution mesh, enhancing also the performance and memory demand. (authors)

Interim Development of new Class B Code Case with Variable Design Lifetime and enhanced design rules to guard against cyclic structural failure mode

This report summarizes updates on the ongoing development of the new American Society of Mechanical Engineers Section III, Division 5, Class B rules to address the potential failure modes of Class B components. An initial design-by-analysis approach and supporting design rules are presented. The elastic-perfectly plastic (EPP) analysis approach has been adopted for primary stress limit and ratcheting check to prevent the component failure against the structural failure mode against primary load and strain accumulation due to cyclic loads. The creep-fatigue damage assessment uses explicitly defined elastic follow-up calculated from the stress concentration region of given component. Damage fraction calculation uses a novel coupled approach to capture the influence of the elastic follow-up and provide adequate conservatism for Class B components. The proposed Class B rules does not use the stress classification approach and uses the combined loads to assess component.

2D Exotic Optical Lattice via a Digital‐Coding Circular Airy Beam

Optical lattices have been widely used from classical to quantum physics. The tunable and scalable fabrication of lattices would be of great significance in lattice‐based multipartite applications. This work demonstrates first that a circular Airy beam (CAB), which has the peculiar properties of self‐healing and abrupt autofocusing, can be used to generate two‐dimensional (2D) optical lattices in propagation when encoded by a programmable spatial mask, resulting in the formation of large‐scale and tunable optical lattices with both axis and axial symmetry, and even high‐orbital kaleidoscope shapes. The efficient diffraction of CAB during the spatial crosstalk with the mask enables the realization of tunable lattices with rich periodicity and complexity. The study shows a flexible method to manipulate lattices with large‐scale and versatile structures for potential applications in integrated and scalable optical and photonic devices.

OpenABLext: An automatic code generation framework for agent-based simulations on CPU-GPU-FPGA heterogeneous platforms

The execution of agent-based simulations (ABSs) on hardware accelerator devices such as graphics processing units (GPUs) has been shown to offer great performance potentials. However, in heterogeneous hardware environments, it can become increasingly difficult to find viable partitions of the simulation and provide implementations for different hardware devices. To automate this process, we present OpenABLext, an extension to OpenABL, a model specification language for ABSs. By providing a device-aware OpenCL backend, OpenABLext enables the co-execution of ABS on heterogeneous hardware platforms consisting of central processing units, GPUs, and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).We present a novel online dispatching method that efficiently profiles partitions of the simulation during run-time to optimize the hardware assignment while using the profiling results to advance the simulation itself. In addition, OpenABLext features automated conflict resolution based on user-specified rules, supports graph-based simulation spaces, and utilizes an efficient neighbor search algorithm. We show the improved performance of OpenABLext and demonstrate the potential of FPGAs in the context of ABS. We illustrate how co-execution can be used to further lower execution times. OpenABLext can be seen as an enabler to tap the computing power of heterogeneous hardware platforms for ABS.
