VICS-120 - A tube-vehicle system test facility.

Description of a large test facility for carrying out research in support of the aerodynamic and ventilation section of a handbook on subway design. The facility described is vertically oriented and has a test section with a nominal inside diameter of 2 in. and a length of 109 ft. It is capable of operating at Reynolds numbers up to full-scale (60,000,000) under open-end tube conditions. The facility is distinguished by a high degree of flexibility in configuration and operational limits. Details are given concerning the plenum assembly, the test section tubes, the scaffold, the instrumentation, the model launcher, the model arrestor, and the models themselves. A step-by-step account is given of the operation of the facility, and a brief sample of the type of data obtained from the facility is presented.

Determination of work functions near melting points of refractory metals by using a direct-current arc.

A direct-current arc in argon at atmospheric pressure was used to determine effective work functions of refractory metals, including tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, and niobium. The procedure is experimentally advantageous, because surface cleanliness of the specimen is not critical, high vacuum is not required, and the anode-cathode spacing is not critical. The experimental procedure involves striking an arc to a metal wire cathode to form a melted ball having an emitting area defined by its diameter. The literature melting point of the metal is taken as the emitting temperature. By using these parameters and the known arc current, effective work functions were calculated from the Richardson-Dushman equation. The calculated work functions agree with recommended handbook values to within about 0.1 V and have typical repeatabilities of 0.02 V.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 3: TDRSS configuration and data summary, part 1

A reference handbook of configuration data and design information is presented. It treats the overall system definition, operations and control, and telecommunication service system including link budgets. A brief description of the user transceiver and ground station is presented. A final section includes a summary description of the TDR spacecraft and all the subsystems. The data presented are largely in tabular form for easy reference.

Directory of aerospace safety specialized information sources

A directory is presented to make available to the aerospace safety community a handbook of organizations and experts in specific, well-defined areas of safety technology. It is designed for the safety specialist as an aid for locating both information sources and individual points of contact (experts) in engineering related fields. The file covers sources of data in aerospace design, tests, as well as information in hazard and failure cause identification, accident analysis, materials characteristics, and other related subject areas. These 171 organizations and their staff members, hopefully, should provide technical information in the form of documentation, data and consulting expertise. These will be sources that have assembled and collated their information, so that it will be useful in the solution of engineering problems. One of the goals of the project in the United States that have and are willing to share data of value to the aerospace safety community.

The orbital mechanics of flight mechanics

A reference handbook on modern dynamic orbit theory is presented. Starting from the most basic inverse-square law, the law of gravity for a sphere is developed, and the motion of point masses under the influence of a sphere is considered. The reentry theory and the orbital theory are discussed along with the relative motion between two bodies in orbit about the same planet. Relative-motion equations, rectangular coordinates, and the mechanics of simple rigid bodies under the influence of a gravity gradient field are also discussed.

Image Display And Manipulation System (IDAMS), user's guide

A combination operator's guide and user's handbook for the Image Display and Manipulation System (IDAMS) is reported. Information is presented to define how to operate the computer equipment, how to structure a run deck, and how to select parameters necessary for executing a sequence of IDAMS task routines. If more detailed information is needed on any IDAMS program, see the IDAMS program documentation.

Earth Observatory Satellite system definition study. Report 2: Instrument constraints and interfaces

The instrument constraints and interface specifications for the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) are discussed. The Land Use Classification Mission using a 7 band Thematic Mapper and a 4 band High Resolution Pointable Imager is stressed. The mission and performance of the instruments were reviewed and expanded to reflect the instrument as a part of the total remote sensing system. A preliminary EOS interface handbook is provided to describe the mission and system, to specify the spacecraft interfaces to potential instrument contractors, and to describe the instrument interface data required by the system integration contractor.

Molecular fluorescence as a monitor of minor stratospheric constituents

The potential of molecular fluorescence was assessed as a stratospheric monitor of the concentrations of various minor species. Seventeen molecules were considered and all spectral regions from the vacuum ultraviolet through to the infrared are included. The exercise has produced few surprises; however, further confirmation has emerged as to the feasibility of this sensitive technique for monitoring stratospheric OH, NO2, and SO2, sufficient to warrant its development as analytical flight hardware for these species. All the other molecules have been eliminated with the exception of C10 which appears to have promise but requires additional information before its detection limit can be calculated; its fluorescence spectrum is as yet uninvestigated. A handbook for molecular fluorescence is presented, and a compilation of all reported studies for simple molecules using line source excitation is included.
