A transient performance method for CO2 removal with regenerable adsorbents

A computer program is described which can be used to predict the transient performance of vacuum-desorbed sorbent beds for CO2 or water removal, and composite beds of two sorbents for simultaneous humidity control and CO2 removal. The program was written primarily for silica gel and molecular sieve inorganic sorbents, but can be used for a variety of adsorbent materials. Part 2 of this report describes a computer program which can be used to predict performance for multiple-bed CO2-removal sorbent systems. This program is an expanded version of the composite sorbent bed program described in Part 1.

Marshes and turbid waters

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. The study of the alluvial zones of the French Atlantic littoral at a taxonomic scale which can bring out the general nature of the sediments and their geomorphic forms is being achieved with the aid of ERTS-1 imagery. It will be necessary to run as many lines as possible to study both the alluvial plains, indicating the seasonal phases of the lowest and highest humidity, as well as the turbidity of littoral waters which change in relation to the tides. A better understanding of these alluvial zones and the origin of the sedimentary forms will not be limited to theoretical interest alone, but will have practical application in numerous fields such as agriculture, shell fishing, and land reclamation.

Hydrogen-oxygen catalytic ignition and thruster investigation. Volume 2: High pressure thruster evaluations

A high pressure thruster effort was conducted with the major objective of demonstrating a duct cooling concept with gaseous propellant in a thruster operating at nominally 300 psia and 1500 lbf. The analytical design methods for the duct cooling were proven in a series of tests with both ambient and reduced temperature propellants. Long duration tests as well as pulse mode tests demonstrated the feasibility of the concept. All tests were conducted with a scaling of the raised post triplet injector design previously demonstrated at 900 lbf in demonstration firings. A series of environmental conditioned firings were also conducted to determine the effects of thermal soaks, atmospheric air and high humidity. This volume presents the results of the high pressure thruster evaluations.

Study of Ice Particle Formation and Lifetime in Space Environment

The ice particles are formed when liquid and/or humid gases vent to the space. These submicroscopic ice particles are potential contamination sources of the environments during Skylab operations. The critical size of ice particle and its nucleation rate based on the theory of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation by sublimation are analyzed. The equations which are pertinent for studying the growth and evaporation of the ice particles are formulated. The mechanisms affecting the lifetime of ice particle are discussed. The gas dynamic techniques for experimental study of ice particle formation are proposed.

A composite study of cloud, ozone and other data from recent satellite experiments

Pictorial data from the Image Dissector Camera System (IDCS) and Temperature-Humidity Infrared Radiometer (THIR) experiments on Nimbus 4 satellite are analyzed along with: (a) global total ozone maps prepared from Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (IRIS) data and (b) total ozone and its vertical distribution as derived from Backscatter Ultraviolet (BUV) spectrometer data. A close relationship is generally observed between centers of high ozone and vortices in the IDCS and THIR montages. This is also confirmed by low centers in the 200 mb Northern Hemisphere charts. The vertical distribution of ozone indicates that the enhancement in ozone in these cases occurs in the lower stratosphere (and possibly to a minor extent in the troposphere) rather than in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere.

A fluidic device for measuring constituent masses of a flowing binary gas mixture

A continuous reading mass flow device was developed to measure the component flow of a binary gas mixture. The basic components of the device are a fluidic humidity sensor and a specially designed flow calorimeter. These components provide readings of gas mixture ratio, mixture heat capacity, heat dissipated by the calorimeter and the gas temperature rise across the calorimeter. These parameter values, applied in the general definitions of specific heat capacity and the heat capacity of a gas mixture, produce calculated component flow rates of the mixture being metered. A test program was conducted to evaluate both the steady state and dynamic performance of the device.

Design and evaluation of combustors for reducing aircraft engine pollution

Efforts in reducing exhaust emissions from turbine engines are reported. Various techniques employed and the results of testing are briefly described and referenced for detail. The experimental approaches taken to reduce oxides of nitrogen emissions include the use of: (1) multizone combustors incorporating reduced dwell times, (2) fuel-air premixing, (3) air atomization, (4) fuel prevaporization, and (5) gaseous fuel. Since emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are caused by poor combustion efficiency at engine idle, the studies of fuel staging in multizone combustors and air assist fuel nozzles have indicated that large reductions in these emissions can be achieved. Also, the effect of inlet-air humidity on oxides of nitrogen was studied as well as the very effective technique of direct water injection. The emission characteristics of natural gas and propane fuels were measured and compared with those of ASTM-Al kerosene fuel.

Development of termination and utilization concepts for flat conductor cables. Volume 1: Development of low profile flat conductor cable connecting device and permanent splice

The development of low-profile flat conductor cable (FCC) connecting device and FCC permanent splice methods are discussed. The design goal for the low-profile connecting device was to mate and unmate FCC harness to a typical spacecraft component with a maximum height of 3/8 in. The results indicate that the design, fabrication, and processing of the low-profile connecting device are feasible and practical. Some redesign will be required to achieve the goal of 3/8 in. Also, failures were experienced subsequent to salt spray and humidity exposure. Five different FCC permanent splice methods were considered. Subsequent to evaluation of these five methods, two design concepts were chosen for development tests.
