Sintering and Creep Behavior of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia and Hafnia Based Thermal Barrier Coatings

The sintering and creep of plasma-sprayed ceramic thermal barrier coatings under high temperature conditions are complex phenomena. Changes in thermomechanical and thermophysical properties and in the stress response of these coating systems as a result of the sintering and creep processes are detrimental to coating thermal fatigue resistance and performance. In this paper, the sintering characteristics of ZrO2-8wt%y2O3, ZrO2-25wt%CeO2-2.5wt%Y2O3, ZrO2-6w%NiO- 9wt%Y2O3, ZrO2-6wt%Sc2O3-2wt%y2O3 and HfO2-27wt%y2O3 coating materials were investigated using dilatometry. It was found that the HfO2-Y2O3 and baseline ZrO2-Y2O3 exhibited the best sintering resistance, while the NiO-doped ZrO2-Y2O3 showed the highest shrinkage strain rates during the tests. Higher shrinkage strain rates of the coating materials were also observed when the specimens were tested in Ar+5%H2 as compared to in air. This phenomenon was attributed to an enhanced metal cation interstitial diffusion mechanism under the reducing conditions. It is proposed that increased chemical stability of coating materials will improve the material sintering resistance.

Surface-Doped Zinc Gallate Colloidal Nanoparticles Exhibit pH-Dependent Radioluminescence with Enhancement in Acidic Media

As abnormal acidic pH symbolizes dysfunctions of cells, it is highly desirable to develop pH-sensitive luminescent materials for diagnosing disease and imaging-guided therapy using high-energy radiation. Herein, we explored near-infrared-emitting Cr-doped zinc gallate ZnGa 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) in colloidal solutions with different pH levels under X-ray excitation. Ultrasmall NPs were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method by controlling the addition of ammonium hydroxide precursor and reaction time, and structural characterization revealed Cr dopants on the surface of NPs. The synthesized NPs exhibited different photoluminescence and radioluminescence mechanisms, confirming the surface distribution of activators. It was observed that the colloidal NPs emit pH-dependent radioluminescence in a linear relationship, and the enhancement reached 4.6-fold when pH = 4 compared with the colloidal NPs in the neutral solution. This observation provides a strategy for developing new biomaterials by engineering activators on the nanoparticle surfaces for potential pH-sensitive imaging and imaging-guided therapy using high-energy radiation.

Surface Doping Boosts Triplet Generation Yield in Perovskite-Sensitized Upconversion

Triplet–triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) can efficiently generate higher energy photons at low relative fluences. Bulk metal halide perovskites have offered promise in efficiently sensitizing molecular triplet states in the solid state, necessary for the integration of TTA-UC into device-based applications. Recent work focused on TTA-UC from a rubrene triplet annihilator sensitized by perovskite thin films has established relatively efficient charge extraction from the perovskite, forming the triplet exciton in rubrene. Yet, the specifics underpinning charge transfer at the perovskite/rubrene interface are not fully elucidated. Here, to improve device performance and study the properties governing charge transfer at the interface, various organic solvents are explored to treat the perovskite surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy show a difference in the electronic band structure, where both n- and p-type terminated perovskite surfaces are observed depending on the solvent used. Supported by optical spectroscopy, the impact of the perovskite electronic structure is monitored, indicating that n-type perovskite sensitizers feature higher TTA-UC efficiencies due to favorable band bending resulting in efficient hole-mediated triplet formation. Overall, the tuning of the electronic structure of the perovskite sensitizer through solvent treatment is shown to be a key force in tuning the mechanism of efficient triplet generation.

Evidence of multiscale supercurrents in K-doped BaFe 2 As 2

K-doped BaAs 2 Fe 2 (K-Ba122) superconductor is a promising material for applications. However, it has been found challenging to achieve high critical current density (J c ) in untextured bulk sample. In this paper we investigated bulk samples prepared by varying the milling energy density, which affects the grain and grain boundary microstructures, and we investigated their magnetic performance to better understand what causes their different J c . We found that in our samples, which all have small grain size, T c does not appear directly correlated to J c . Moreover, AC susceptibility reveals in at least one case obvious signs of multiscale supercurrents, not caused by granularity but that directly influence the overall J c performance. Considering the microstructural features and the magnetization response we ascribed the J c differences to lack of connectivity on a larger scale due to nano-cracks at some grain boundaries, which subdivided the samples into macroscopic regions and inevitably limited the overall performance. We discuss possible routes to overcome those extrinsic current-blocking defects.

Fluorescent CQD-Doped Styrene Acrylic Emulsion Coating Film with Enhanced Optical Properties

Styrene acrylic emulsions (SAEs) have emerged as a promising material for water-based coatings. However, they are still limited by their own defects in practical applications, poor weatherability, and degradation of performance at lower or higher temperatures. Here, we introduce a facile approach to producing fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from wood processing residues and fabricating fluorescent CQD/SAE coating films via emulsion-casting. The addition of the fluorescent CQDs enhanced the optical performance of the CQD/SAE coating films. The fluorescent CQDs were prepared via a hydrothermal approach and were obtained after heating at 180 °C for 6 h at a reaction concentration of 50 mg/mL. The synthesized CQDs resulted in a high fluorescence, and the CQDs had an average size of 1.63 nm. Various concentrations of the fluorescent CQDs were doped into the SAE coating film, which improved its optical properties. We also characterized and discussed the products and then explored their optical properties. This study presents the potential of fluorescent CQD/SAE coating films for applications in anti-counterfeiting coatings, fluorescent adhesives, and papermaking.

Revealing Micro-Scale Doping Variations in Thin-Films via Simultaneous Luminescence and Current Collection Measurements

Doping thin films used for photovoltaic absorbers is both critical to maximize device voltage and challenging due to complex interactions between point defects in these materials. Such interactions can result in compensation of the intended dopant species, meaning that the active charge-carrier concentration is lower than the concentration incorporated dopants. Charge-carrier compensation is directly related to the open-circuit voltage (VOC) deficit, or magnitude of VOC relative to the theoretical limit. Understanding how the carrier concentration varies within thin-films is necessary to design material processing schedules to minimize this VOC deficit and produce more efficient devices. Unfortunately, measurements of the free carrier concentration are generally relevant at the device level and cannot resolve local differences. Resolving local doping differences in thin-films such as Cd(Se,Te), CZTS, and CIGSe requires techniques with micron or sub-micron spatial resolution due to the polycrystalline structure as well as intended and unintended composition variations in these materials. In this contribution, we show how simultaneous measurement of cathodoluminescence (CL) and electron-beam-induced current (EBIC) can be used to expose doping variations in Cd(Se,Te) thin-films. Simultaneous collection of these signals reveals unexpected differences in the electric field strength through the device thickness due to spatial variation in the carrier concentration.

Crystal Chemistry, Band-Gap Red Shift, and Electrocatalytic Activity of Iron-Doped Gallium Oxide Ceramics

This work for the first time unfurls the fundamental mechanisms and set the stage for an approach to derive electrocatalytic activity, which is otherwise not possible, in a traditionally known wide band gap oxide material. Specifically, we report on the tunable optical properties, in terms of wide spectral selectivity and red-shifted band gap, and electrocatalytic behavior of iron (Fe) doped gallium oxide (ß-Ga 2 O 3 ) model system. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of sintered Ga 2-x Fe x O 3 (GFO) (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) compounds provide evidence for the Fe 3+ substitution at Ga 3+ site without any secondary phase formation. Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns reveal that the GFO compounds crystallize in monoclinic crystal symmetry with C2/m space group. The electronic structure of the GFO compounds probed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data reveals that, at lower concentrations of Fe exhibits mixed chemical valence states (Fe 3+ , Fe 2+ ), whereas single chemical valence state (Fe 3+ ) is evident for higher Fe content (x = 0.20-0.30). The optical absorption spectra reveal a significant red shift in the optical band gap with Fe doping. The origin of the significant red shift even at low concentrations of Fe (x = 0.05) is attributed to the strong sp-d exchange interaction originated from the 3 d 5 electrons of Fe 3+ . The optical absorption edge observed at ˜450 nm with lower intensity is the characteristic of Fe doped compounds associated with Fe 3+ - Fe 3+ double excitation process. Coupled with optical band gap red shift, electrocatalytic studies of GFO compounds reveals that, interestingly, Fe doped Ga 2 O 3 compound exhibits electrocatalytic activity in contrast to intrinsic Ga 2 O 3 . Fe doped samples (GFO) demonstrated appreciable electrocatalytic activity towards the generation of H 2 through electrocatalytic water splitting. An onset potential and tafel slope of GFO compounds includes: ~900 mV, ~210 mVdec -1 (x = 0.15) and ~1036 mV, ~290 mVdec-1 (x = 0.30). The electrocatalytic activity of Fe doped Ga-oxide compounds is attributed to cumulative effect of different mechanisms such as; doping resulted new catalytic centers, enhanced conductivity and electron mobility. Hence, in this report, for the first time, we explored a new pathway; electrocatalytic behavior of Fe doped Ga 2 O 3 resulted due to Fe chemical states, red shift in optical band gap. The implications derived from this work may be applicable to a large class of compounds and further options may be available to design functional materials for electrocatalytic energy production.

The influence of hydrothermal synthesis temperature on the electronic structure and luminescence property of Cr-doped ZnGa 2 O 4 nanoparticles

Cr-doped ZnGa 2 O 4 (CZGO) is a near-infrared-emitting material with long-lasting persistent luminescence. This unique property makes it a great candidate in optical imaging and sensing for various biomedical applications. Nanosized CZGO can be synthesized via a hydrothermal approach, but the reaction temperatures reported in existing literature vary from 120°C to 220°C, approaching the highest temperature allowed for a standard autoclave vessel. The reason for choosing a particular hydrothermal synthesis temperature has rarely been discussed, and it is unclear whether the resulting CZGO possess the same optical properties. This work compares CZGO nanoparticles synthesized at temperatures from the lowest reported 120°C and to as high as 220°C. We find that although all the synthesized CZGO are light emitting, they exhibit different luminescence intensities and respond differently to the change of excitation energy. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis is employed to investigate the local chemical environment around Zn, Ga and Cr, respectively. We found synthesis temperature strongly influences the Ga species formed in these particles. The energy transfer mechanism is further elucidated using X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) in combination with element-specific XAFS. Two energy transfer paths are identified, which explains the different excitation energy dependencies of the observed photoluminescence.

Localized UV emitters on the surface of β-Ga 2 O 3

Abstract Monoclinic gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) is attracting intense focus as a material for power electronics, thanks to its ultra-wide bandgap (4.5–4.8 eV) and ability to be easily doped n -type. Because the holes self-trap, the band-edge luminescence is weak; hence, β-Ga 2 O 3 has not been regarded as a promising material for light emission. In this work, optical and structural imaging methods revealed the presence of localized surface defects that emit in the near-UV (3.27 eV, 380 nm) when excited by sub-bandgap light. The PL emission of these centers is extremely bright—50 times brighter than that of single-crystal ZnO, a direct-gap semiconductor that has been touted as an active material for UV devices.

Superior photo-carrier diffusion dynamics in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites revealed by spatiotemporal conductivity imaging

Abstract The outstanding performance of organic-inorganic metal trihalide solar cells benefits from the exceptional photo-physical properties of both electrons and holes in the material. Here, we directly probe the free-carrier dynamics in Cs-doped FAPbI 3 thin films by spatiotemporal photoconductivity imaging. Using charge transport layers to selectively quench one type of carriers, we show that the two relaxation times on the order of 1 μs and 10 μs correspond to the lifetimes of electrons and holes in FACsPbI 3 , respectively. Strikingly, the diffusion mapping indicates that the difference in electron/hole lifetimes is largely compensated by their disparate mobility. Consequently, the long diffusion lengths (3~5 μm) of both carriers are comparable to each other, a feature closely related to the unique charge trapping and de-trapping processes in hybrid trihalide perovskites. Our results unveil the origin of superior diffusion dynamics in this material, crucially important for solar-cell applications.

Lifetime and diffusion length measurements on silicon material and solar cells

Experimental methods were evaluated for the determination of lifetime and diffusion length in silicon intentionally doped with potentially lifetime-degrading impurities found in metallurgical grade silicon, impurities which may be residual in low-cost silicon intended for use in terrestrial flat-plate arrays. Lifetime measurements were made using a steady-state photoconductivity method. Diffusion length determinations were made using short-circuit current measurements under penetrating illumination. Mutual consistency among all experimental methods was verified, but steady-state photoconductivity was found preferable to photoconductivity decay at short lifetimes and in the presence of traps. The effects of a number of impurities on lifetime in bulk material, and on diffusion length in cells fabricated from this material, were determined. Results are compared with those obtained using different techniques. General agreement was found in terms of the hierarchy of impurities which degrade the lifetime.

Extraordinary role of Zn in enhancing thermoelectric performance of Ga-doped n-type PbTe

Although Ga doping can weaken the electron phonon coupling in n-type PbTe, Ga-doped PbTe has a relatively low carrier concentration (n) and high lattice thermal conductivity (κ lat ), resulting in a lower figure of merit (ZT) compared with those of other top-performing n-type PbTe-based thermoelectric materials. Herein, we report the extraordinary role of Zn in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of Ga-doped PbTe. It is discovered that Zn can simultaneously improve the electronic transport properties and decrease the κlat of Ga-doped PbTe, thereby affording a record high ZT avg ~ 1.26 at 400–873 K, with a maximum ZT value of 1.55 at 723 K. The isoelectronic substitution of Zn for Pb in Ga-doped PbTe increases the electrical conductivity and n by inducing the nucleation and growth of Ga 2 Te 3 in the second phase. The formation of Ga 2 Te 3 results in nonstoichiometry and Te deficiency in the PbTe matrix, which increases the number of electron carriers. Additionally, discordant Zn and Ga atoms with displacing off-center from the ideal octahedral positions, as well as Ga 2 Te 3 nanocrystals ranging from 30 to 200 nm coherently embedded into the PbTe matrix effectively weaken the phonon modes and scatter heat-carrying phonons, resulting in a significant reduction in κ lat .

Compositional and structural control in LLZO solid electrolytes

Garnet-based solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) represent a promising class of materials for next-generation batteries with improved safety and performance. However, lack of control over the composition and crystal structure of the well-known Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) garnet material has led to poor reproducibility with a wide range of ionic conductivities reported in the literature. In this study, the role of precursor homogeneity in controlling the compositional and structural evolution of Al-doped LLZO is explored. A novel solution-based synthesis approach is employed to demonstrate enhanced atomic-scale mixing of the starting materials in comparison to conventional solid-state preparation methods. Through this technique, it is shown that the stability and formation temperature of the highly conductive cubic phase is directly impacted by the spatial distribution of the doping element and reactant species in the precursor mixture. Precursor homogeneity was also an important factor in mitigating the formation of unwanted secondary impurities. These findings can be used to guide the synthesis of SSEs with reproducible material characteristics and enhanced electrolytic performance.

Magnesium doping of efficient GaAs and Ga(0.75)In(0.25)As solar cells grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition

Magnesium has been substituted for zinc in GaAs and Ga(0.75)In(0.25)As solar cells grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Bis(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium (Cp2Mg) is used as the MOCVD transport agent for Mg. Full retention of excellent material quality and efficient cell performance results. The substitution of Mg for Zn would enhance the abruptness and reproducibility of doping profiles, and facilitate high temperature processing and operation, due to the much lower diffusion coefficient of Mg, relative to Zn, in these materials.

Scalable Substitutional Re‐Doping and its Impact on the Optical and Electronic Properties of Tungsten Diselenide

Abstract Reliable, controlled doping of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides will enable the realization of next‐generation electronic, logic‐memory, and magnetic devices based on these materials. However, to date, accurate control over dopant concentration and scalability of the process remains a challenge. Here, a systematic study of scalable in situ doping of fully coalesced 2D WSe 2 films with Re atoms via metal–organic chemical vapor deposition is reported. Dopant concentrations are uniformly distributed over the substrate surface, with precisely controlled concentrations down to <0.001% Re achieved by tuning the precursor partial pressure. Moreover, the impact of doping on morphological, chemical, optical, and electronic properties of WSe 2 is elucidated with detailed experimental and theoretical examinations, confirming that the substitutional doping of Re at the W site leads to n‐type behavior of WSe 2 . Transport characteristics of fabricated back‐gated field‐effect‐transistors are directly correlated to the dopant concentration, with degrading device performances for doping concentrations exceeding 1% of Re. The study demonstrates a viable approach to introducing true dopant‐level impurities with high precision, which can be scaled up to batch production for applications beyond digital electronics.

Dual Protective Mechanism of AlPO 4 Coating on High-Nickel Cathode Material for High Energy Density and Long Cycle Life Lithium-Ion Batteries

Cathode material with high nickel content is a promising candidate for the future generation of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, severe structural degradation during cycling limits its practical use, especially for electric vehicles. Herein, AlPO 4 nanoparticles were synthesized and then coated onto the surface of a high-nickel layer-structured cathode via a dry coating method. The AlPO 4 nanoparticles coating significantly improved the cycling stability from 69.2% to over 80% capacity retention after 140 cycles. Furthermore, the structure and chemical composition of the AlPO 4 -coated cathode was investigated by XRD, SEM, XPS, and STEM. Compared with the non-coated cathode, we revealed a dual protective mechanism for enhanced cycling stability, where Al doping and Li 3 PO 4 coating play synergistic roles in protecting cathode material through long-term cycling. This work demonstrates a facile and environmentally friendly approach toward improving the performance of high-nickel LIB cathodes, which can be easily scaled up for industrial applications.

Mechanical properties of zeolite-templated carbons from approximate density functional theory calculations

Zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) is a unique porous carbonaceous material whose structure is ordered at the nanometre scale, enabling a representative periodic description at the atomistic level. Utilizing an existing, well-defined reference model for ZTCs, a structural library of varying compositions was developed by refinement using density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) potentials parameterized for materials science applications. We first determined the quantum chemical-refined structures of models with CH, CHO, CHON, CHOB, and CHOBN compositions with various degrees of heteroatom substitution. These structural models comprise the characteristic morphological features of highly porous carbon materials, such as open-blade surfaces, edges, saddles, and closed-strut formations, spanning a range of curvatures and characteristic sizes. Second, we carried out alternating compression and expansion of the CHO model unit cell to determine the lowest energy structure as well as to obtain its bulk modulus in order to demonstrate a close connection between macroscopic observations and atomic-scale structures. Further, the agreement between experimental measurements and the computational model is remarkable and demonstrates the power of approximate density functional theory as a cost-effective computational tool with chemical accuracy for the investigation of structure/property relationships in real-world carbon-based solids.

Microwave performance of InAlAs/InGaAs/InP MODFET's

Modulation-doped InAlAs/InGaAs/InP structures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and fabricated into FETs with excellent RF gain performance. The intrinsic transconductance was about 400 mS/mm at 300 K. Current gain cutoff frequencies of up to 26.5 GHz were obtained in 1-micron gate devices. Extremely small S12 and large S21 led to a very large F(max) of 62 GHz. These results represent the best reported figures for 1-micron devices in this material system, and slightly better than those obtained in recently developed pseudomorphic modulation-doped field effect transistors.
