A Fire Community Observatory: Interdisciplinary, AI-informed Post-Fire Rapid Response for Improved Water Cycle Science at Watershed Scale

Wildfire is an ecological disturbance that disrupts the hydrological cycle. In the past few years, a record number of multiple-and-compounding fires have occurred across urban-wildland gradients in the Western United States. Changes to watershed hydrological partitioning in response to fires (infiltration, runoff, evapotranspiration) presents unprecedented challenges to “Water-in-the-West” through negative impacts to water supply and its quality, and is a direct threat to downstream communities, groundwater, and drinking water supply infrastructure. While much work is being done to advance Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) use during fires for emergency response (i.e. predict fire movement, direct evacuations), significant potential exists to use AI/ML to address three scientific grand challenges that are rarely addressed in a convergent science context: 1) how to enhance the potential resiliency of a landscape before fire(s), 2) how to cost-effectively and optimally monitor watershed changes after fires, and 3) how to predict future hydrological and biogeochemical trajectories in fire-impacted watershed given climate change. This whitepaper addresses DOE Focal Area 1: Data acquisition and assimilation enabled by machine learning, AI, and advanced methods.

Emergent Concepts from a Community Ideation on AI4ESP

This AI4ESP white paper is the outcome of an open ideation session led by PNNL that numerous institutions participated in. The leadership team included Amy Goldman, Huiying Ren, Tim Scheibe, and James Stegen. The white paper is broken into two sections: (1) A summary of the ideation session, and (2) a short summary of a ‘meta idea’ that emerged from combining multiple ideas spanning the three primary focal area themes articulated in BER’s AI4ESP guidance: A - Data Acquisition and Assimilation, B - Predictive Modeling, and C - Insight from Complex Data. The white paper, therefore, has two goals. The first section is meant to be a resource for innovating around how to pursue open, community-based ideation in virtual environments. The second section is meant as an example of the kinds of ‘meta ideas’ that can emerge from bringing diverse ideas together in a single shared space. We consider the second section to be a submission to BER’s request for white papers around AI4ESP.

Understanding the Seismic Ground Motion Spatial Variability Using Network Analysis Community Detection

This project is to explore ground motion spatial distribution using a new approach graph-based network analysis. In this study, we combine a large-N seismic array and graph analytics to explore spatial variability and correlation at a local scale using small local and regional earthquakes. In this method, each seismic station is modeled as a node and the similarities of the waveforms that represent ground motions between two stations are modeled as edges. By analyzing this graph network using the similarity matrices and community detection algorithm, we can group the stations spatially with similar patterns. A random forest algorithm is used to reveal the important features that affect the spatial grouping. The result suggests site conditions, and how they interact with the incident seismic wavefield, strongly condition the spatial correlation of ground motion. Future progress in characterizing ground motion spatial variability will require dense wavefield measurements, either through nodal deployments, or perhaps distributed acoustic sensing measurements of seismic wavefields.

Topical Group on Application and Industry Community Engagement Frontier Snowmass 2021 (Summary Report)

HEP community leads and operates cutting-edge experiments for the DOE Office of Science which have challenging sensing, data processing, and computing requirements that far surpass typical industrial applications. To make necessary progress in the energy, material, and fundamental sciences, development of novel technologies is often required to enable these advanced detector and accelerator programs. Our capabilities include efficient co-design, which is a prerequisite to enable the deployment of advanced techniques in a scientific setting where development spans from rapid prototyping to robust and reliable production scale. This applies across the design spectrum from the low level fabrication techniques to the high level software development. It underpins the requirement for a holistic approach of innovation that accelerates the cycle of technology development and deployment. The challenges set by the next generation of experiments requires a collaborative approach between academia, industry and national labs. Just a single stakeholder will be unable to deliver the technologies required for the success of the scientific goals. Tools and techniques developed for High Energy Physics (HEP) research can accelerate scientific discovery more broadly across DOE Office of Science and other federal initiatives and also benefit industry applications.

Savings in Action: Lessons Learned from a Vermont Community with Solar Plus Storage

As the U.S. works to meet emissions reduction goals and modernize power sector operations, residential buildings - which account for 21% of the total U.S. electricity consumption - will play a key role. Residential buildings with energy efficiency and distributed energy resources are able to provide value to multiple stakeholders, including the occupant, utility, and society at large. To account for this, multiple metrics that capture the value each stakeholder gets are required. This report contains analysis of a unique solar plus storage community in Vermont, including the calculation of multiple metrics and a unique "score card" that succinctly captures all of the value in a single figure.

Effects of Surface Water Fluctuations and Sediment Movement on Hyporheic Zone Biogeochemistry and Microbial Communities

The hyporheic zone (HZ) is the region beneath and adjacent to streams, rivers, and riverine estuaries where the bidirectional exchange of groundwater (GW) and surface water (SW) occurs. The HZ is an integral component of watersheds, a biologically-active zone providing critical control of SW quality and aquatic life. Much prior work has investigated microbially-mediated biogeochemical reactions in the HZ, mainly from a steady-state perspective. Yet key unique aspects of the HZ include 1) proximity to SW fluctuations (e.g., storms, dam operations) which cyclically drive DOC and DO into the bed and banks creating biogeochemical “hot moments,” and 2) continually shifting surface sediment. Both of these controls should substantially influence microbial communities, yet remain poorly understood, and a mechanistic predictive framework does not exist.

Community Input on the Need, Scope, and Development Roadmap of a Proposed National Virtual Biosecurity for Bioenergy Crops Center (NVBBCC)

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was awarded a pilot project in FY22 under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Biopreparedness Research Virtual Environment (BRaVE) initiative, to define research priorities, needs, and requirements for a national virtual center devoted to the biosecurity of bioenergy crops. The mission of the proposed center, referred to as the National Virtual Biosecurity for Bioenergy Crop Center (NVBBCC), would be to provide the scientific basis and tools to detect, characterize, model, and mitigate biothreats to bioenergy crops. This function will be essential to ensure the projected increased US reliance over the next few decades on key plant-based energy products, such as biojet fuel. The NVBBCC is envisioned as a distributed, virtual center with multiple national laboratories at its core to maximize the use of existing unique facilities and expertise across the DOE complex. A major goal of the pilot project was to develop a roadmap for establishing NVBBCC through a series of meetings to gather community input. A total of about 150 individuals, drawn from DOE laboratories, the USDA, academia, NIH, DHS and the private sector participated in six planning meetings held in FY23. Four of the meetings were focused on specific research topics (disease detection, dispersion and disease propagation, biomolecular characterization of plant-pathogen interaction, and mitigation strategies). These four meetings were followed by a meeting that focused on computational needs to support collaborative, data-intensive research within a distributed center as well as workforce development. A final meeting focused on establishing and maintaining preparedness within NVBBCC to respond to an emerging disease within bioenergy crops and how it would collaborate and coordinate with USDA and DHS.

Overview of Solar Panel Recycling for Indigenous Communities

In recent years, Native tribes across the country have embraced solar energy to power their communities. However, in approximately 25-30 years after installation, the solar panels will enter end-of-life (EOL) status, meaning that they will begin to operate less efficiently than upon initial implementation. At this point, tribes can determine the outcome: they can continue to operate the array, or they can dispose of the panels. Recycling is an option that promotes the use of high-value recyclable materials in solar panels in the circular economy. There are several companies across the US that offer recycling of solar panels, but at various costs. It is important that a hazardous waste expert makes an initial assessment of the solar array to identify any solar panels that cannot be recycled. Currently, recycling solar panels is not cost-effective or environmentally sustainable, but significant research into improving the cost and carbon footprint is ongoing.
