Determination of the Accomodation Coefficient Using Vapor/Gas Bubble Dynamics in an Acoustic Field

Non-equilibrium liquid/vapor phase transformations can occur in superheated or subcooled liquids in fast processes such as in evaporation in a vacuum, in processing of molten metals, and in vapor explosions. The rate at which such a phase transformation occurs, Xi, can be described by the Hertz-Knudsen-Langmuir formula. More than one century of the history of the accommodation coefficient measurements shows many problems with its determination. This coefficient depends on the temperature, is sensitive to the conditions at the interface, and is influenced by small amounts of impurities. Even recent measurements of the accommodation coefficient for water (Hagen et al, 1989) showed a huge variation in Beta from 1 for 1 micron droplets to 0.006 for 15 micron droplets. Moreover, existing measurement techniques for the accommodation coefficient are complex and expensive. Thus development of a relatively inexpensive and reliable technique for measurement of the accommodation coefficient for a wide range of substances and temperatures is of great practical importance.

Frontal Polymerization in Microgravity: Bubble Behavior and Convection on the KC-135 Aircraft

Frontal polymerization is a mode of converting monomer into polymer via a localized exothermic reaction zone that propagates through the coupling of thermal diffusion and Arrhenius reaction kinetics. Frontal polymerization was discovered in Russia by Chechilo and Enikolopyan in 1972. The macrokinetics and dynamics of frontal polymerization have been examined in detail and applications for materials synthesis considered. Large temperature and concentration gradients that occur in the front lead to large density gradients. A schematic is presented for a liquid monomer, usually a monoacrylate, being converted to a liquid (thermoplastic) polymer. The velocity can be controlled by the initiator concentration but is on the order of a cm/min. If the liquid monomer is multifunctional, then a solid (thermoset) polymer is formed. Convection can occur with all types of monomers if the front propagates up a tube. Bowden et al. studied liquid/solid systems. McCaughey et al. studied liquid polymer systems. Descending fronts in thermoplastic systems are also susceptible to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Stability of an Evaporating Constrained Vapor Bubble

The major accomplishments of the experimental portion of the research were documented in Ling Zheng's doctoral dissertation. Using Pentane, he obtained a considerable amount of data on the stability and heat transfer characteristics of an evaporating meniscus. The important points are that experimental equipment to obtain data on the stability and heat transfer characteristics of an evaporating meniscus were built and successfully operated. The data and subsequent analyses were accepted by the Journal of Heat Transfer for publication in 2004 [PU4]. The work was continued by a new graduate student using HFE-7000 [PU3] and then Pentane at lower heat fluxes. The Pentane results are being analyzed for publication. The experimental techniques are currently being used in our other NASA Grant. The oscillation of the contact line observed in the experiments involves evaporation (retraction part) and spreading. Since both processes occur with finite contact angles, it is important to derive a precise equation of the intermolecular forces (disjoining pressure) valid for non-zero contact angles. This theoretical derivation was accepted for publication by Journal of Fluid Mechanics [PU5]. The evaporation process near the contact line is complicated, and an idealized micro heat pipe has been proposed to help in elucidating the detailed evaporation process [manuscripts in preparation].

Interactions Forces and the Flow-Induced Coalescence of Drops and Bubbles

In order to accomplish the proposed macroscale experimental goals, we designed and built a pair of miniaturized computer-controlled four-roll mills, similar but much smaller than the 4-roll mill that had been develop earlier in Prof. Leal's group for studies of drop deformation and breakup. This unique experimental facility allows for controlled experiments on the breakup and coalescence of very small drops in the size range of 20-200 micrometers in diameter for a wide variety of flows and under a wide range of flow conditions including time-dependent flows, etc. The small size of this device is necessary for coalescence studies, since coalescence occurs in viscous fluids at capillary numbers that are large enough to be experimentally accessible only for drops that are smaller than approximately 100_m in diameter. Using these miniaturized 4-roll mills, we have obtained the first quantitative data (so far as we are aware) on the flow-induced coalescence process.

Fluid Bubble Eliminator

A gas-liquid separator uses a helical passageway to impart a spiral motion to a fluid passing therethrough. The centrifugal fore generated by the spiraling motion urges the liquid component of the fluid radially outward which forces the gas component radially inward. The gas component is then filtered through a gas-permeable, liquid-impervious membrane and discharged through a central passageway.

Late Rather Than Early Onset Bubbles in the Pulmonary Artery During Altitude Exposures Correlate Better with the Onset of "Pain-Only" Decompression Illness

Mechanistic insight about "pain-only" decompression illness (DCI) is limited given indirect information about venous gas emboli (VGE) detected in the pulmonary artery with Doppler ultrasound. However, we show that VGE first detected late in an altitude exposure are closely associated with subsequent symptom onset. Knowing that VGE occur late is an indication that a symptom will occur soon, but this is not a sufficient condition to guarantee that a symptom will occur.

Use of Sonification for Analysis and Detection of Plasma Bubbles at 21 MHz

This research explores sonification as a useful tool for space science data exploration. Our interest lies in basic scientific analysis of plasmas of the ionosphere, of interplanetary space and of the interstellar medium. These plasmas all contain irregularities. Propagation of electromagnetic waves, like optical or radio waves, through a medium with random fluctuations in refractive index results in amplitude and phase fluctuations (Scheuer 1968). These variations may be displayed via sonification, using changes in sounds to represent the data variations. This is particularly useful extending science to the visually-impaired. The xSonify Java-based tool was developed to explore sonification techniques and its value for general science analysis and also assistive technology.

What can be Learned from X-Ray Spectroscopy Concerning Hot Gas in the Local Bubble and Charge Exchange Processes

Solar wind charge exchange produces diffuse X-ray emission with a variable surface brightness comparable to that of the cosmic background. While the temporal variation of the charge exchange emission allows some separation of the components, there remains a great deal of uncertainty as to the zero level of both. Because the production mechanisms of the two components are considerably different, their spectra would provide critical diagnostics to the understanding of both. However, current X-ray observatories are very limited in both spectral resolution and sensitivity in the critical soft X-ray (less than 1.0 keV) energy range. Non-dispersive high-resolution spectrometers, such as the calorimeter proposed for the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma mission, will be extremely useful in distinguishing the cascade emission of charge exchange from the spectra of thermal bremsstrahlung cosmic plasmas.

Global Instability on Laminar Separation Bubbles-Revisited

In the last 3 years, global linear instability of LSB has been revisited, using state-of-the-art hardware and algorithms. Eigenspectra of LSB flows have been understood and classified in branches of known and newly-discovered eigenmodes. Major achievements: World-largest numerical solutions of global eigenvalue problems are routinely performed. Key aerodynamic phenomena have been explained via critical point theory, applied to our global mode results. Theoretical foundation for control of LSB flows has been laid. Global mode of LSB at the origin of observable phenomena. U-separation on semi-infinite plate. Stall cells on (stalled) airfoil. Receptivity/Sensitivity/AFC feasible (practical?) via: Adjoint EVP solution. Direct/adjoint coupling (the Crete connection). Minor effect of compressibility on global instability in the subsonic compressible regime. Global instability analysis of LSB in realistic supersonic flows apparently quite some way down the horizon.
