CARPE DIEM: Coupled Algorithms for Robust Partitioning of Equations for the Dynamic Interactions of Evolving Materials

From aircraft design to non-proliferation, technical and policy decisions are becoming increasingly reliant on simulation of complex, real-world, multi-physics systems involving multiple interacting domains. As the power of computers has grown, deficiencies associated with traditional low-order-accurate mechanisms for inter-domain coupling have become increasingly apparent. The CARPE DIEM project addressed such deficiencies in the context of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) by developing new algorithms and simulation techniques that are based on a novel and rigorous mathematical approach and that are designed for efficiency on modern high-performance computing platforms.

Release a public version of HERON (HERON 2.0) with improved algorithms for the treatment of energy storage

Integrated energy systems (IESs) are essential for decarbonizing electricity and industrial sectors and fully exploiting these systems requires sophisticated planning, scheduling, and dispatching tools to maximize their socio-economic benefits. The Holistic Energy Resource Optimization Network (HERON) is a generic software plugin for the Risk Analysis Virtual Environment (RAVEN) to perform stochastic technoeconomic analysis of IES with economic drivers. This report summarizes the updates made to HERON 2.0. Particularly, we demonstrate one of the added features, Function-based Control Mechanics, by comparing a price-based dispatch strategy with the original perfect foresight baselines. Our case studies successfully demonstrate that the model is capable to incorporate artificial control algorithm into the dispatch of IES components. In addition, our results from the price-based strategy indicate that the control strategies of IES components are key to the economic and temporal performance of our model; therefore, more sophisticated dispatch strategies are required to improve the model performance.

Detection of Anomalies in Gamma Background Radiation Data with K-Means and Self-Organizing Map Clustering Algorithms (Consortium on Nuclear Security Technologies (CONNECT) Q1 Report)

Environmental screening of gamma radiation consists of detecting weak nuisance and anomaly signal in the presence of strong and highly varying background. In a typical scenario, a mobile detector-spectrometer continuously measures gamma radiation spectra in short, e.g., one-second, signal acquisition intervals. The measurement data is a 2D matrix, where one dimension is gamma ray energy, and the other dimension is the number of measurements or total time. In principle, gamma radiation sources can be detected and identified from the measured data by their unique spectral lines. Detecting sources from data measured in a search scenario is difficult due to the highly varying background because of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), and low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of spectral signal measured during one-second acquisition intervals. The objective of this work is to explore unsupervised machine learning (ML) algorithms for detection and identification of weak nuisances and anomalies events in the presence of highly fluctuating background. The challenge is that spectral lines of isotopes are difficult to observe in one-second measurements. Averaging over the entire measurement campaign data set reveals spectral lines of most common background isotopes. Spectral lines of orphan sources, which might appear only in a few measurements during the campaign, will be washed out if averaging is performed over the entire measurement data set. The approach we have explored consists of extracting one-second measurements containing weak spectral features through data clustering. Averaging one-second spectra in a cluster should reveal the presence of anomaly sources. We created two ML models using K-means clustering and Neural Network Self-organizing Map (SOM). Performance of these ML models was benchmarked using search data. One data set contained 137 Cs source, and another dataset contained 131 I source.

Verification and Validation of a Modified Numerical Algorithm for Simulation of Transient Unconfined Groundwater Flow

This report extends verification and validation testing of the NUFT package of codes (Nitao 2000a,b) to the US1P module of code designed for simulation of single-phase mixed or “coupled” saturated and unsaturated (or “variably saturated”) groundwater flow. Importantly, the verification and validation testing of US1P in this report includes performance evaluation of a modified numerical algorithm that was not included in prior quality assurance (QA) of the NUFT package by Carle et al. (2014) for Underground Test Area (UGTA) project activities, which are directed at assessment of radionuclide contamination in groundwater sourced from underground nuclear test locations at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). An immediate purpose of this report is to provide QA for ongoing large-scale, three-dimensional (3-D) groundwater flow modeling of transient water levels associated with longterm water supply pumping and underground nuclear testing at the NNSS (Jackson and Fenelon, 2018; Jackson et al., 2021). For UGTA activities, the QA refers to the standards of ASTM (1996) for verification and validation testing of groundwater modeling codes.

Preliminary Enhanced LAW Glass Formulation Algorithm

This report summarizes the Preliminary Enhanced Low-Activity Waste Glass Formulation Algorithm (GFA), its background information, and the calculations it performs. The Preliminary Enhanced Low-Activity Waste GFA is a tool that has been developed in MATLAB to formulate glass for a given waste composition while attempting to maximize waste loading. It is intended for use at the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, where nuclear waste will be vitrified into glass. The formulated glass is required to satisfy several processing and product quality constraints. In addition, calculations must account for associated uncertainties in constraint prediction and measurement. The GFA adheres to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory nuclear quality assurance procedures and has been validated and verified.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy is a promising approach to elemental analysis of forensic samples. Elements in the mixture can be identified from the XRF data because chemical elements are associated with unique spectra. This report consists of preliminary assessment of automated identification of unknown mixtures of elements from XRF spectra using a genetic algorithm (GA). The XRF spectra are measured at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at the liquid-liquid interface during solvent extraction process. Possible advantages of using GA for identifying elements at the interface from XRF data are discussed, and a path for implementation of GA is outlined.

Algorithms and file structures to enhance software workflows for ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS): CRADA 410 (Final Report)

This document is the final report for CRADA 410 (Project No. 72496). The purpose of this project was supporting customizations of algorithms and raw data file structures to enhance software workflows for liquid chromatography (LC), mass spectrometry (MS) and ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS)-based metabolite characterization. PNNL worked with Agilent to evaluate and improve the integration of ion mobility into existing MS data analysis methods of Agilent software tools. The project augmented PNNL’s capabilities to analyze complex omics samples. These capabilities are directly beneficial to DOE and PNNL efforts to characterize and analyze compounds in microbial and plant communities. The project assisted Agilent in further developing improved instrument-software solutions combining ion mobility with mass spectrometry for widespread applications in life sciences and other fields.

Complex radius in the R-matrix algorithm for inclusion of direct capture component [Slides]

In the low-energy range there are two possible physical mechanisms for γ-ray emissions. While both mechanisms emit γ-rays, the compound radiative capture (CRC) process is generated by the formation of a compound nucleus state before γ-emission. CRC has a characteristic resonance structure in the cross section, The direct radiative capture (DRC) process goes to the final state by the electromagnetic radiation of the incident neutron. DRC has a smooth behavior in the cross section. For light nuclei, a non-negligible component of the neutron capture process can be often associated to DRC process. Although these two mechanisms should be described by a unified theoretical formalism, in the nuclear data libraries, the CRC and DRC components are evaluated and reported separately. The updated R-matrix algorithm will allow the ability to implicitly include correlations between CRC and DRC mechanisms, to improve the quality of nuclear data evaluations, and to facilitate simple large-scale applicability to current nuclear data evaluations.

Development of Microreactor Automated Control System (MACS): Surrogate Plant-level Modeling and Control Algorithms Integration

This report discusses progress on the modeling and integration task as part of the development of Microreactor Automated Control System (MACS). What follows is a discussion of the software tools used to develop a surrogate microreactor plant-level model, MACS module development, and a summary of the findings from integration with a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setup at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Oak Ridge National Laboratory worked with INL to understand available hardware at INL (such as existing control platforms). With this information and using a preliminary framework for MACS with software interfaces defined, surrogate models and initial automated control algorithms were created for integration into the hardware to provide a HIL demonstration platform for MACS. Available reduced order reactor models that leverage existing microreactor neutronics and thermal hydraulics models have been integrated in the surrogate plant-level model. The surrogate model has been evaluated for sensitivity of all parameters and the MACS software modules (including the surrogate model) have been demonstrated to interact with the hardware. The integration, however, pointed to the need for further improvements to the framework—and specifically improvements to the interfaces to ensure that the HIL simulator is capable of longer-term stable operation with MACS in the loop. These improvements will be the focus of future research.

Advanced Algorithms for Scrutiny of Mandatory State Reports Declarations to the IAEA (Final Project Report)

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, or Agency) has an interest in applying machine learning to safeguards problems. However, the lack of machine training data for outside researchers is a significant impediment for progress in including advanced algorithms in safeguards practices. Information about a State’s inventory and movements of nuclear material is highly sensitive, both from a commercial perspective and from a security perspective. States (and commercial entities) do not freely divulge this information, and the IAEA–which receives detailed information from States as accounting reports–considers all information concerning nuclear materials location and composition to be Safeguards Confidential. Even within the Agency, information marked as safeguards confidential can be accessed only on a direct need-to-know basis by those who analyze and summarize the information for that particular State.
