Electrically Pumped Epitaxially Regrown GaSb-Based Type-I Quantum-Well Surface-Emitting Lasers with Buried High-Index-Contrast Photonic Crystal Layer

Epitaxially regrown electrically pumped photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) emitting near 2 and 2.6 μm are designed, fabricated, and characterized. A high-index-contrast photonic crystal layer is incorporated into the GaSb-based laser heterostructure by air-hole-retaining epitaxial regrowth. A square lattice of triangular holes is etched in the top waveguide core layer of the incomplete laser heterostructure. The nanopatterned surface is subsequently cleaned and regrown with AlGaAsSb p-cladding material. Transmission electron microscopy studies demonstrate uniform regrowth over the nanopatterned GaSb surface. The selected regrowth regimes yield a buried 2D array of elongated air-holes. The diode PCSELs based on moderately etched nanopatterns demonstrate band-edge lasing near 2 μm up to room temperatures. The cascade diode PCSELs operate near 2.6 μm with minimum threshold current densities of about 500 A cm -2 achieved at 180 K. The devices generate mW level output in narrow divergence beam emitted from the window in substrate contact. The angle-resolved electroluminescence measurements reveal a four-sub-band band structure with an apparent photonic bandgap corresponding to the buried high-index-contrast square photonic crystal layer. Finally, the PCSELs made of heterostructures supporting two modes in the vertical direction demonstrate two sets of sub-bands showing anti-crossing-like interaction.

Corrosion integrity of oil cement modified by environment responsive microspheres for CO2 geologic sequestration wells

In order to ensure the safe and effectiveness of CO{sub 2} geological storage, an environmental responsive polymer microspheres (ERPM) was prepared to improve the corrosion resistance of cement stone. The structure and environmental response characteristics of ERPM were characterized, and then the anti-corrosion performance and anti-corrosion mechanism for ERPM were discussed. The results shown that ERPM had good environmental response characteristics and temperature resistance. ERPM could effectively suppressed the corrosion rate and the damage degree of mechanical properties of cement stone. The corrosion integrity of cement stone was improved due to the acidic response characteristic and form polymer films of ERPM, which effectively shield the direct contact between corrosion medium and hydration products.

Long-term strength retrogression of silica-enriched oil well cement: A comprehensive multi-approach analysis

The strength retrogression of a Class G cement enriched by adding 60–80% silica cured under the condition of 200 °C and 50 MPa were investigated by multiple different analysis methods. Short-term strength analysis suggests sonic strength testing is a poor indicator of real mechanical strength at such curing condition. Long-term testing up to 142 d shows all designed systems experiences dramatic deterioration in physical and mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, Young's modulus, water permeability and gas permeability. Further testing was conducted using X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, mercury intrusion and scanning electron microscope. The study reveals that the set cement experiences significant microstructure coarsening with increasing curing time, especially after 30 d curing. The strength retrogression and microstructure coarsening seem to be accompanied with the continued consumption of silica, and are likely caused by the gradual conversion of semi-crystalline C-S-H into crystalline tobermorite and xonolite over the long-term curing.

Regulated lithium ionic flux through well-aligned channels for lithium dendrite inhibition in solid-state batteries

The utilization of solid electrolyte (SE) to suppress lithium (Li) dendrites is promising but still far from satisfactory due to the inhomogeneous Li plating/stripping. In this paper, we demonstrated a novel strategy to inhibit Li dendrites via regulating Li-ion flux in SE by using vertically aligned channels. The ion-insulating walls facilitated uniform distribution of Li-ion flux through the channels, leading to a homogeneous Li deposition, thus alleviating Li dendrite formation. As a result, symmetric cells with this SE exhibited excellent long-term stability (1000 h) against Li metal. In addition, Li4Ti5O12 (LTO)/Li cell with the developed SE achieved good battery performance over 100 cycles. The mechanism for dendrite suppression was further investigated by phase-field simulation. This work provides a novel strategy by manipulating uniform Li-ion flux to fabricate SE to inhibit Li dendrites and facilitates the development of high-performance rechargeable Li batteries.

A directional electrode separator improves anodic biofilm current density in a well-mixed single-chamber bioelectrochemical system

In this study, a directional electrode separator (DES) was designed and incorporated into a single-chamber bioelectrochemical system (BES) to reduce migration and reoxidation of hydrogen. This issue arises when H 2 , generated at the cathode, travels to the anode where anodic biofilms use H 2 . To test the feasibility of our design, a 3D-printed BES reactor equipped with a DES was inoculated with anaerobic digestor granules and operated under fed-batch conditions using fermented corn stover effluent. The DES equipped reactor achieved significantly higher current densities (~53 A/m²) compared to a conventional single-chamber BES without a separator (~16 A/m²), showing a 3.3 times improvement. Further, control abiotic electrochemical experiments revealed that the DES exhibited significantly higher proton conductivity (456±127 µS/mm) compared to a proton exchange membrane (67±21 µS/mm) with a statistical significance of P=0.03. The DES also effectively reduced H 2 migration to the anode by 21-fold relative to the control. Overall, incorporating a DES in a single-chamber BES enhanced anodic current density by reducing H 2 migration to the anode.
