User's Manual: Thermal Radiation Analysis System TRASYS 2

A digital computer software system with generalized capability to solve the radiation related aspects of thermal analysis problems is presented. When used in conjunction with a generalized thermal analysis program such as the systems improved numerical differencing analyzer program, any thermal problem that can be expressed in terms of a lumped parameter R-C thermal network can be solved. The function of TRASYS is twofold. It provides: (a) Internode radiation interchange data; and (b) Incident and absorbed heat rate data from environmental radiant heat sources. Data of both types is provided in a format directly usable by the thermal analyzer programs. The system allows the user to write his own executive or driver program which organizes and directs the program library routines toward solution of each specific problem in the most expeditious manner. The user also may write his own output routines, thus the system data output can directly interface with any thermal analyzer using the R-C network concept.

Gallium phosphide high temperature diodes

High temperature (300 C) diodes for geothermal and other energy applications were developed. A comparison of reverse leakage currents of Si, GaAs, and GaP was made. Diodes made from GaP should be usable to 500 C. A Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE) process for producing high quality, grown junction GaP diodes is described. This process uses low vapor pressure Mg as a dopant which allows multiple boat growth in the same LPE run. These LPE wafers were cut into die and metallized to make the diodes. These diodes produce leakage currents below ten to the -9th power A/sq cm at 400 C while exhibiting good high temperature rectification characteristics. High temperature life test data is presented which shows exceptional stability of the V-I characteristics.

Investigations of medium wavelength magnetic anomalies in the Eastern Pacific using Magsat data

Processing continued on the data set covering the first three months of the mission. Orbits were selected over a specified range of longitude and latitude and those orbits falling within the geographical boundaries were stored on a disk and a listing made. To verify the quality of the data, plots were made showing altitude vs latitude, anomalous field vs latitude, and corrected anomalous field vs latitude. Results of the plotting showed that: (1) data from the first day of the mission are not usable because they are too noisy; (2) some orbits contain spikes, no doubt a processing error on the tape; (3) some orbits contain a 20 deg region in latitude, offset roughly 30 nT from the rest of the anomalous field profiles; and (4) the correlation between the adjacent orbits is poor. Even the new ring current coefficients provided with a later, corrected set of data tapes did not not yield the desired correlations.

Global positioning system timing receivers in the DSN

The system (GPS) is a worldwide navigation system using a constellation of Earth satellites with onboard clocks. The GPS is also usable to transfer time and frequency. Preliminary tests with the breadboard receiver at NBS produced precision in time and frequency transfer between the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) and NBS. JPL's plans to install receivers in the DSN to demonstrate their ability to transfer time and frequency within the DSN and between the DSN and outside agencies are discussed.

Combining LANDSAT MSS, aerial photographs and ground measurements to estimate rangeland productivity

The production of a vegetation map of over 2.2 million acres with detail down to the plant community level, and the production of estimates of rangeland productivity (pounds of usable forage per acre for cattle) for a 500,000 acre subset of area with a design goal for accuracy and precision of + or - 20% at the 80% confidence level, are considered. The data consist of five groups: maps of area, LANDSAT data, digital terrain data, large scale aerial photography, and ground plots. An outline of the data acquisition and data reduction schemes are presented.

Optimal use of electrophysiological indicators of muscular effort and fatigue

Electromyograms (EMG) from working muscles convey information on effort and fatigue. Their application, e.g., to assess the demands of vehicle control tasks, is complicated by the cooperative action of sets of muscles, by both intrinsic and imposed filtering, and by numerous other sources of variation. Fourier analyses of these noise like signals offer one approach to interpretation; downward spectral shifts accompany fatigue. Techniques are being sought (in both time and frequency domains) for further condensing the wideband EMG signals, while retaining essential information, into a concise 'state vector' usable in comparing control system designs.

Experimental investigation of graphite/polyimide sandwich panels in edgewise compression

The local and general buckling of graphite/polyimide sandwich panels simply supported along all four edges and loaded in uniaxial edgewise compression is investigated. Material properties of sandwich panel constituents (adhesive and facings) were determined from flatwise tension and sandwich beam flexure tests. An adhesive bond study resulted in the selection of a suitable cure cycle for FM 34 polyimide film adhesive and, a bonding technique using a liquid cell edge version of that adhesive resulted in considerable mass savings. Tensile and compressive material properties of the facings, quasiisotropic, symmetric, laminates (0, +45,90,-45)s of Celion/PMR-15, were determined at 116, R.T., and 589 K (-250, R.T., and 600 F) usng the sandwich beam flexure test method. Results indicate the Gr/PI is a usable structural material for short term use at temperatures as high as 589 K (600 F). Buckling specimens were 1006.5 sq cm. 156 sq in., had quasiisotropic symmetric facings (0, + or - 45,90)s and a glass/polyimide honeycomb core (HRH-327-3/8-4).

Recent work in advanced hydrogen production concepts

The hydrogen photoelectrolytic conversion activity investigated the practicability of semiconductor electrolytic devises that use solar energy to decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen in an apparent single step process. The photocatalytic decomposition of inorganic hydrogen compounds; i.e., hydrobromic and hydriodic acids using rhodium organic bridge complexes were also studied. The feasibility of direct high temperature thermal decompositions of water with diffusion processes for separation of the equilibrium mixture of hydrogen and oxygen into usable energy sources was examined.

Preparation of perfluorinated 1,2,4-oxadiazoles

Fluorinated alkyl or alkylether 1,2,4 oxadiazole compounds are prepared by cyclizing the corresponding alkyl or alkylether imidoyl amidoximes in vacuo or in an inert atmosphere at a temperature within the range of 40 C to 100 C. for a period of 8 to 144 hours in the presence of an acid compound which can accept ammonia to form a salt. The imidoyl amidoximes usable in this process are either polymeric or nonpolymeric. The products, when polymeric, have excellent heat, chemical and solvent resistance.

DSN data systems software methodology

A software methodology for JPL deep space network (DSN) data systems software implementations through transfer and delivery is presented. The DSN Data Systems Software Methodology is compatible with and depends on DSN software methodology and also incorporates the characteristics of real-time program development in a DSN environment. The DSN Data Systems software implementation consists of a series of six distinct phases. An Independent Group is responsible for verification and validation of the DSN Data Systems software during developing phases. The DSN data systems software methodology is applied to all development software provided for or by the DSN data systems section in Mark IV where there is a desire for reliability, maintainability, and usability within budget and schedule constraints.

A computer package for the design and eigenproblem solution of damped linear multidegree of freedom systems

Systems described by the matrix differental equation are considered. An interactive design routine is presented for positive definite mass, damping, and stiffness matrices. Designing is accomplished by adjusting the mass, damping, and stiffness matrices to obtain a desired oscillation behavior. The algorithm also features interactively modifying the physical structure of the system, obtaining the matrix structure and a number of other system properties. In case of a general system, where the M, C, and K matrices lack any special properties, a routine for the eigenproblem solution of the system is developed. The latent roots are obtained by computing the characteristic polynomial of the system and solving for its roots. The above routines are prepared in FORTRAN IV and prove to be usable for the machines with low core memory.

Gallium arsenide solar cells-status and prospects for use in space

Gallium Arsenide solar cells now equal or surpass the ubiquitous silicon solar cells in efficiency, radiation resistance, annealability, and in the capability for producing usable power output at elevated temperatures. NASA has developed a long-range research and development program to capitalize on these manifold advantages. In this paper we review the current state and future prospects for R&D in this promising solar cell material, and indicate the progress being made toward development of GaAs cells suitable for a variety of space missions. Results are presented from studies which demonstrate conclusively that GaAs cells can provide a net mission cost and weight savings for certain important mission classes.

Simplicity in command and control systems - A human factors consideration

The importance of simplicity in the man computer interface (MCI) is stressed because of the effect it has on the system containing the MCI. Results are used from an MCI study at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to find an area where the system MCIs can be simplified. The circumstances under which these simplifications are appropriate are listed. The concepts of cognitive simplicity and process simplicity are presented as design alternatives for the MCI. In addition, the concepts of understandability, operation, learnability, level of learning, and usability are presented as tools for the system designer. The use of these concepts in developing a systematic MCI design is discussed.

An efficient low- and moderate-resolution spectrograph for the Hale telescope

A new low-to-moderate resolution spectrograph has been designed and built for the Cassegrain focus of the Hale 5.08-meter telescope. To maximize efficiency, resolution, and wavelength coverage the light is divided into two spectra regions by a dichroic filter behind the entrance slit, after which there are two completely separate spectrographs. The blue spectrograph operates from 3200 A to 5200 A while the red one goes from 5200 A to 10,000 A. The red detector is an 800 x 800 TI CCD while the blue detector is a 320 x 512 RCA CCD or a Shectrograph image pulse-counting system. A Boksenberg IPCS can also be mounted on the blue camera. The overall efficiency of the Cassegrain telescope, spectrographs, and CCD's combined, ranges from 5 percent to 13 percent between 3600 A and 8200 A. The spectrograph is usable from 3200 A to 10,400 A.
