HERON

HERON is a modeling toolset and plugin for RAVEN to accelerate stochastic technoeconomic assessment of the economic viability of various grid-energy system configurations, especially with application to electrical grids and integrated energy systems (IES). The frameworks enabling this toolset are INL's RAVEN and its TEAL plugin. The toolset includes automated RAVEN workflow generation tools for performing stochastic analysis and optimization driven by technoeconomic factors. The workflows generated employ RAVEN for parametric or optimizing study of grid component characteristics, and again for stochastic sampling of regulated and deregulated markets, load, and weather histories. The toolset further provides methods for economically-optimal dispatch of system components given the stochastic samples of market, load, and weather histories. The toolset allows assembling of existing and new models through the RAVEN interface to the Modelica process modeling language.

HydroChrono: An Open-Source Hydrodynamics Package for Project Chrono

In this paper we present the development and verification of HydroChrono, a hydrodynamics package for the Project Chrono physics engine. This package includes the implementation of hydrodynamics equations, the added mass for multibody systems, the development of I/O functions as well as a Python API, and comparison against standard reference cases and other existing tools. HydroChrono provides a flexible, fully open-source solution for simulating wave energy converters (WECs), floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) platforms, and other hydrodynamic systems. Here we show, via comparisons with existing tools for benchmark verification cases, that HydroChrono accurately models hydrodynamic forces - making it a useful tool for the design and optimization of these systems. Additionally, the integration of HydroChrono with Project Chrono offers access to finite element modeling capabilities and high-fidelity modelling - with Chrono's existing coupling to CFD and SPH codes. This provides numerical modelers with a multifidelity simulation framework for designing and validating these systems. The development of HydroChrono provides a new, open-source solution for simulating hydrodynamic systems. Its compatibility with other simulation tools enables a more streamlined and efficient design process, advancing the field and providing new opportunities for innovation in this area.

Piecewise Linear Optimization for Public EV Charging Depots in Different Utility Environments

With the proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs), EV supply equipment technology is being pushed to increasingly higher power levels, such as extreme fast charging (XFC) at 300kW or more. As more public XFC depots are connected to electric distribution systems, utility operators will mitigate their impact with pricing schemes and programs such as demand response, demand charges, and time-varying prices. In this paper we describe an XFC management system that combines an on-site battery energy storage system and an optimization application that minimizes the cost to operate the depot in light of the utility pricing programs. We have designed the optimizer specially to use fast and simple linear programming so that it can be deployed to low-cost computing platforms. We also describe how several utility pricing schemes are integrated into a single piecewise model, reducing the engineering effort to implement the optimizer in different utility environments.

Constrained Block Nonlinear Neural Dynamical Models

Neural network modules conditioned by known priors can be effectively trained and combined to represent systems with nonlinear dynamics. This work explores a novel formulation for data-efficient learning of deep control-oriented nonlinear dynamical models by embedding local model structure and constraints. The proposed method consists of neural network blocks that represent input, state, and output dynamics with constraints placed on the network weights and system variables. For handling partially observable dynamical systems, we utilize a state observer neural network to estimate the states of the system's latent dynamics. We evaluate the performance of the proposed architecture and training methods on system identification tasks for three nonlinear systems: a continuous stirred tank reactor, a two tank interacting system, and an aerodynamics body. Models optimized with a few thousand system state observations accurately represent system dynamics in open loop simulation over thousands of time steps from a single set of initial conditions. Experimental results demonstrate an order of magnitude reduction in open-loop simulation mean squared error for our constrained, block-structured neural models when compared to traditional unstructured and unconstrained neural network models.

Programming Abstractions for Managing Workflows on Tiered Storage Systems

Scientific workflows in High Performance Computing (HPC) environments are processing large amounts of data. The storage hierarchy on HPC systems is getting deeper, driven by new technologies (NVRAMs, SSDs, etc.) There is a need for new programming abstractions that allow users to seamlessly manage data at the workflow level on multi-tiered storage systems, and provide optimal workflow performance and use of storage resources. In previous work, we introduced a software architecture Managing Data on Tiered Storage for Scientific Workflows (MaDaTS) that used a Virtual Data Space (VDS) abstraction to hide the complexities of the underlying storage system while allowing users to control data management strategies. In this article, we detail the data-centric programming abstractions that allow users to manage a workflow around its data on the storage layer. The programming abstractions simplify data management for scientific workflows on multi-tiered storage systems, without affecting workflow performance or storage capacity. We measure the overheads and effectiveness introduced by the programming abstractions of MaDaTS. Our results show that these abstractions can optimally use the storage capacity in lesser capacity storage tiers, and simplify data management without adding any performance overheads.

BOOSTR: A Dataset for Accelerator Control Systems

The Booster Operation Optimization Sequential Time-series for Regression (BOOSTR) dataset was created to provide a cycle-by-cycle time series of readings and settings from instruments and controllable devices of the Booster, Fermilab’s Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) operating at 15 Hz. BOOSTR provides a time series from 55 device readings and settings that pertain most directly to the high-precision regulation of the Booster’s gradient magnet power supply (GMPS). To our knowledge, this is one of the first well-documented datasets of accelerator device parameters made publicly available. We are releasing it in the hopes that it can be used to demonstrate aspects of artificial intelligence for advanced control systems, such as reinforcement learning and autonomous anomaly detection.

Multi-Objective Cycle Optimization of an Integrally Geared Waste Heat Recovery Unit for a Combined Cycle Power System

This paper has presented the cycle design and optimization details for a sCO2-based WHRS targeting the Solar Turbines Titan 130. The PreheatSR cycle layout was chosen to effectively address the issue of acid dew point corrosion and ensure high system performance is not significantly impacted by use of alternative fuels. The optimization process discussed uses a multi-objective optimization to discover a series of optimal cycle configurations given ambient temperature variability for a chosen site location while considering the initial capital cost of the cycle components. Cycle models built that incorporated off-design methods for the heat exchangers and turbomachinery allowed for the investigation of cycle operation that maximizes power output for individual cycle conditions. The resulting Pareto front serves as a guide for how to configure the WHRS cycle for the highest yearly energy extracted for a given investment.

Co-Optimization Scheme for Hybrid Electric Vehicles Powertrain and Exhaust Emission Control System Using Future Speed Prediction

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have been an effective solution for improved vehicle fuel efficiency and reduced emission pollution. In this paper, a co-optimization scheme is proposed to optimize fuel efficiency for HEVs. Here, the proposed optimization scheme uses obtainable future speed prediction as the basis to optimally tune control parameters for the existing powertrain control system. The ramp-up time of the catalyst temperature to reach its light-off level in the exhaust emission system is also considered as an additional optimization constraint to reduce emission. The Toyota Prius Hybrid Simulink model which is an integrated model for a powertrain and exhaust emission system is validated using real data from several real driving cycle scenarios. Then, to simplify the formulation of the proposed algorithm, the model for the optimization for powertrain and exhaust emission systems is represented by a set of equivalent neural network (NN) models learned using the data generated from the well-validated Toyota Prius Hybrid Simulink model. Using NN models, a co-optimization algorithm is established that provides an optimal tuning of some fuel-sensitive powertrain control parameters using future speed prediction, leading to a novel co-optimization algorithm, achieving on average a further 9.22% fuel savings for the Toyota Prius Hybrid Simulink model.

Hypergames and Cyber-Physical Security for Control Systems

The identification of the Stuxnet worm in 2010 provided a highly publicized example of a cyber attack that physically damaged an industrial control system. This raised public awareness about the possibility of similar attacks against other industrial targets—including critical infrastructure. Here, we use hypergames to analyze how strategic perturbations of sensor readings and calibrated parameters can be used to manipulate a system that employs optimal control. Hypergames form an extension of game theory that enables us to model strategic interactions where the players may have significantly different perceptions of the game(s) they are playing. Past work with hypergames has focused on relatively simple interactions consisting of a small set of discrete choices for each player. Here, we apply single-stage hypergames to larger systems with continuous variables. We find that manipulating constraints can be a more effective attacker strategy than manipulating objective function parameters. Moreover, the attacker need not change the underlying system to carry out a successful attack—it may be sufficient to deceive the defender controlling the system. It is possible to scale our approach up to even larger systems, but this will depend on the characteristics of the system in question, and we identify several characteristics that will make those systems amenable to hypergame analysis.

Optimal design and integration of decentralized electrochemical energy storage with renewables and fossil plants

Increasing renewable energy requires improving the electricity grid flexibility. Existing measures include power plant cycling and grid-level energy storage, but they incur high operational and investment costs. Using a systems modeling and optimization framework, we study the integration of electrochemical energy storage with individual power plants at various renewable penetration levels. Furthermore, our techno-economic analysis includes both Li-ion and NaS batteries to encompass different technology maturity levels. A California case-study indicates localized integration to be cost-effective for greater grid flexibility. Li-ion batteries can mitigate the residual demand fluctuations of small to medium-sized plants, while NaS batteries would be best-suited for larger storage with higher renewable penetration. Overall, the battery-enabled renewable integration could reduce the unmet grid demand by 75%, the renewable curtailment by 58%, and the CO 2 emission intensity by 16% while including the life cycle emissions of the battery and the renewable farm. Our scenario-based analysis also indicates that rather than replacing all fossil power plants, it is more economical to combine batteries and renewables with individual fossil plants to achieve a clean energy grid.

User-Centric Communication With Aerial Network for 6G: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

Meeting the diverse needs of user verticals requires innovative cellular architectures that can offer additional degrees of freedom to provide on-demand services. The terrestrial user-centric radio access network (UC-RAN) stands out as an excellent choice for this purpose. However, a drawback of UC-RAN is its tendency to prioritize high-priority verticals, often resulting in a subpar quality of experience for low-priority verticals. This issue is particularly exacerbated in hotspot areas. Here, to address this problem, we introduce an aerial network integrated with terrestrial UC-RAN to provide coverage to users which are not served by the terrestrial network. Furthermore, we analyze the impact of key configuration and optimization parameters (COPs), such as location, transmit power, altitude, and beamwidth of aerial base stations (ABSs) on system key performance indicators (KPIs), such as coverage, latency satisfaction, average spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency. We formulate a robust multiobjective function to maximize these KPIs without biasing toward any specific KPI(s). Finally, we propose a deep reinforcement learning optimization framework based on the state-of-the-art soft actor-critic algorithm to control ABS COPs and optimize system KPIs. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed optimization framework can converge to near-optimal solutions derived from the pseudo brute force in a few thousand epochs.

Process intensification approach to enhancing heat and mass transfer: Radio frequency (RF) assisted drying of paper and board

Conventional multi-cylinder drying of paper and board typically relies on both conductive drying from steam-heated cylinders and convective drying, where heated air flows over the paper web surface. Conduction primarily contributes to heat transfer, while convection is the main driver of mass transfer. However, conventional drying systems are heavily dependent on steam, usually powered by fossil fuels, and are often energy-inefficient with high levels of waste. Additionally, these surface-driven processes result in a lower percentage of energy absorption compared to the energy supplied, leading to significant energy losses. To improve this long-standing process, an experimental system was developed to investigate a process intensification approach involving the integration of Radio Frequency (RF) heating, a volumetric electromagnetic technology, alongside traditional conduction and convection drying methods. This study also emphasizes the use of sensors to continuously monitor key parameters such as moisture content, supply system temperatures, sample temperatures, air flows, and drying rates in real-time. The effect of RF as an auxiliary energy source in localized environments at varying moisture levels was explored to optimize industrial drying systems, quantify potential improvements, and provide insights for future studies. Experimental results from trials combining RF with convection and with the base case alternating conduction-convection drying processes are presented. It is shown that RF is a viable process intensification approach for paper drying improving the drying rate and energy intensity at higher moisture contents. These findings offer valuable insights for process intensification and contribute to the process development, modeling, and simulation of advanced paper drying techniques.

Bridging microscopy with molecular dynamics and quantum simulations: an atomAI based pipeline

Recent advances in (scanning) transmission electron microscopy have enabled a routine generation of large volumes of high-veracity structural data on 2D and 3D materials, naturally offering the challenge of using these as starting inputs for atomistic simulations. In this fashion, the theory will address experimentally emerging structures, as opposed to the full range of theoretically possible atomic configurations. However, this challenge is highly nontrivial due to the extreme disparity between intrinsic timescales accessible to modern simulations and microscopy, as well as latencies of microscopy and simulations per se. Addressing this issue requires as a first step bridging the instrumental data flow and physics-based simulation environment, to enable the selection of regions of interest and exploring them using physical simulations. Here we report the development of the machine learning workflow that directly bridges the instrument data stream into Python-based molecular dynamics and density functional theory environments using pre-trained neural networks to convert imaging data to physical descriptors. Additionally, the pathways to ensure structural stability and compensate for the observational biases universally present in the data are identified in the workflow. This approach is used for a graphene system to reconstruct optimized geometry and simulate temperature-dependent dynamics including adsorption of Cr as an ad-atom and graphene healing effects. However, it is universal and can be used for other material systems.

High-Fidelity Building Emulator for Integrated Comfort and Energy Analysis using EnergyPlus and Radiance

The growing need for smart, energy-efficient, and occupant-centric buildings has created a demand for advanced control systems that can optimize building operations to balance energy savings, demand flexibility, and comfort. However, current building energy simulation tools, such as EnergyPlus, have limitations that hinder the development and evaluation of these complex control systems. To address this challenge, we introduce a high-fidelity building emulator that dynamically couples EnergyPlus with Radiance for enhanced daylight modeling. The introduced workflow allows researchers and practitioners to rapidly develop and evaluate innovative control solutions. An example study looking at a south-facing office zone revealed up to 67% deviation in predicted light levels, which can significantly impact building assessment.

Nuclear waste attributes of near-term deployable small modular reactors

The nuclear waste attributes of near-term deployable SMRs were assessed using established nuclear waste metrics, which are the DU mass, SNF mass, volume, activity, decay heat, radiotoxicity, and decommissioning LLW volumes. Metrics normalized per unit electricity generation were compared to a reference large PWR. Three SMRs, VOYGR, Natrium, and Xe-100, were selected because they represent a range of reactor and fuel technologies and are active designs deployable by the decade’s end. The SMR nuclear waste attributes show both some similarities to the PWR and some significant differences caused by reactor-specific design features. The DU mass is equivalent to or slightly higher than the PWR. Back-end waste attributes for SNF disposition vary, but the differences have a limited impact on long-term repository isolation. SMR designs can vary significantly in SNF volume (and thus heat generation density). However, these differences are amenable to design optimization for handling, storage, transportation, and disposal technologies. Nuclear waste attributes from decommissioning vary depending on design and decommissioning technology choices. Given the analysis results in this study and assuming appropriate waste management system and operational optimization, there appear to be no major challenges to managing SMR nuclear wastes compared to the reference PWR.

Optimizing design and dispatch of a renewable energy system with combined heat and power

We embellish a mixed-integer program that prescribes a set of renewable energy, conventional generation, and storage technologies to procure, along with a corresponding dispatch strategy. Specifically, we add combined heat and power to this set. The model minimizes fixed and operational costs less incentives for the use of various technologies, subject to a series of component interoperability and system-wide constraints. The resulting mixed-integer linear program contains hundreds of thousands of variables and constraints. We demonstrate how to efficiently formulate and solve the corresponding instances such that we produce near-optimal solutions in minutes. A previous rendition of the model required hours of solution time for the same instances.
