Nanotwinned alloys under high pressure

Nanotwinned alloys are of interest due to their high strength and ductility, but twin boundaries may not be stable under shear. Computational studies indicate that high hydrostatic pressure may suppress detwinning mechanisms. Here, in this study, we investigate the microstructural changes of nanotwinned-nanocrystalline copper-nickel and Inconel 725 alloys under quasi-hydrostatic pressures up to 50 gigapascals (GPa). The alloys are compressed in a diamond anvil cell. In-situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) and ex-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to monitor microstructural changes. Twin boundary deformation and grain growth occur at 11.4 GPa quasi-hydrostatic pressure in the copper-nickel alloy. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that hydrostatic pressure causes elevated local shear stress at grain boundaries, which leads to atomic rearrangements. A superposition of hydrostatic and deviatoric pressures lead to partial dislocation mediated twin boundary migration. In contrast, the Inconel 725 alloy showed stable twin and grain boundaries up to a quasi-hydrostatic pressure of 12.7 GPa. Texture, high solid solution strengthening, and low stacking fault energy are hypothesized to the enhanced microstructural stability in Inconel 725.

Omics Research on the International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) is an orbiting laboratory whose goals include advancing science and technology research. Completion of ISS assembly ushered a new era focused on utilization, encompassing multiple disciplines such as Biology and Biotechnology, Physical Sciences, Technology Development and Demonstration, Human Research, Earth and Space Sciences, and Educational Activities. The research complement planned for upcoming ISS Expeditions 45&46 includes several investigations in the new field of omics, which aims to collectively characterize sets of biomolecules (e.g., genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic products) that translate into organismic structure and function. For example, Multi‐Omics is a JAXA investigation that analyzes human microbial metabolic cross‐talk in the space ecosystem by evaluating data from immune dysregulation biomarkers, metabolic profiles, and microbiota composition. The NASA OsteoOmics investigation studies gravitational regulation of osteoblast genomics and metabolism. Tissue Regeneration uses pan‐omics approaches with cells cultured in bioreactors to characterize factors involved in mammalian bone tissue regeneration in microgravity. Rodent Research‐3 includes an experiment that implements pan‐omics to evaluate therapeutically significant molecular circuits, markers, and biomaterials associated with microgravity wound healing and tissue regeneration in bone defective rodents. The JAXA Mouse Epigenetics investigation examines molecular alterations in organ specific gene expression patterns and epigenetic modifications, and analyzes murine germ cell development during long term spaceflight. Lastly, Twins Study ("Differential effects of homozygous twin astronauts associated with differences in exposure to spaceflight factors"), NASA's first foray into human omics research, applies integrated analyses to assess biomolecular responses to physical, physiological, and environmental stressors associated with spaceflight.

Science requirements for a global change technology architecture trade study

Science requirements for a global change technology initiative (GCTI) Architecture Trade Study were established by reviewing and synthesizing results from recent studies. A scientific rationale was adopted and used to identify a comprehensive set of measureables and their priorities. Spatial and temporal requirements for a number of measurement parameters were evaluated based on results from several working group studies. Science requirements were defined using these study results in conjunction with the guidelines for investigating global changes over a time scale of decades to centuries. Requirements are given separately for global studies and regional process studies. For global studies, temporal requirements are for sampling every 1 to 12 hours for atmospheric and radiation parameters and 1 day or more for most earth surface measurements. Therefore, the atmospheric measureables provide the most critical drivers for temporal sampling. Spatial sampling requirements vary from 1 km for land and ocean surface characteristics to 50 km for some atmospheric parameters. Thus, the land and ocean surface parameters have the more significant spatial variations and provide the most challenging spatial sampling requirements.

Excursions in technology policy

This technical report presents a summary of three distinct projects: (1) Measuring economic benefits; (2) Evaluating the SBIR program; and (3) A model for evaluating changes in support for science and technology. the first project deals with the Technology Applications Group (TAG) at NASA Langley Research Center. The mission of TAG is to assist firms interested in commercializing technologies. TAG is a relatively new group as is the emphasis on technology commercialization for NASA. One problem faced by TAG and similar groups at other centers is measuring their effectiveness. The first project this summer, a paper entitled, 'Measuring the Economic Benefits of Technology Transfer from a National Laboratory: A Primer,' focused on this measurement problem. We found that the existing studies of the impact of technology transfer on the economy were conceptually flawed. The 'primer' outlines the appropriate theoretical framework for measuring the economic benefits of technology transfer. The second project discusses, one of the programs of TAG, the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. This program has led to over 400 contracts with Small Business since its inception in 1985. The program has never been evaluated. Crucial questions such as those about the extent of commercial successes from the contracts need to be answered. This summer we designed and implemented a performance evaluation survey instrument. The analysis of the data will take place in the fall. The discussion of the third project focuses on a model for evaluating changes in support for science and technology. At present several powerful forces are combining to change the environment for science and technology policy. The end of the cold war eliminated the rationale for federal support for many projects. The new- found Congressional conviction to balance the budget without tax increases combined with demographic changes which automatically increase spending for some politically popular programs will make it difficult to find funding for science and technology. Also, the two political parties have very different conceptions of the appropriate future for research and development spending. All these changes create the potential for serious, perhaps unintended, consequences for the economic future of the country. In a paper entitled, 'A Conceptual Framework for Evaluating the Impact of Changes in Federal Support for Science and Technology,' we introduce a model to evaluate the effects of changes in federal spending for science and technology. This paper both provides a way of organizing informed discussions and points out important research topics for science and technology policy.

Cross-Government Development of Space-Based Quantum Sensors for Earth and Space Science

Quantum sensing technologies promise advantages over their traditional counterparts in terms of sensitivity and accuracy, including higher signal-to-noise ratios, better measurement resolution and sensitivity, and accuracies that can be tied to fundamental constants. As a result of the potentially promising advantages of quantum sensing technologies, the multi-agency Space Science and Technology Partnership Forum (S&T Forum), consisting of NASA, NRO, and USSF, conducted a 2023 study to identify the current state of space-based quantum sensing technology development that will enable cutting-edge Earth and space science. The findings contained within this work provide insight into quantum sensing and quantum enabling technology work across the S&T Forum to inform technology development and identify potential government, industry, and academic coordination and collaboration opportunities in quantum sensing within the Earth and space science community. The results herein focus on the collation of quantum sensing technologies, facilities, and developers captured from the participants of the study to provide a broad overview of quantum sensor development for the Earth and space science community; specifically highlighting how five particular areas of quantum sensing technology (listed in alphabetical order) are of near-term interest to all three S&T Forum agencies: atomic clocks, atom interferometers, quantum magnetometers, Rydberg sensors, and single photon detectors. The findings in this work point to the intent of the S&T Forum agencies to lean into the development of quantum sensing technology in which the three agencies have mutual near-term interest, including cross-cutting enabling component technologies. The information presented provides points of entry in terms of people, facilities, and quantum sensing technology work within the government as well as increased transparency into the five quantum sensing technology areas of mutual interest of the S&T Forum agencies to remove barriers and encourage participation and partnership with the Earth and space science community.
