Implantable acoustic-beacon automatic fish-tracking system

A portable automatic fish tracking system was developed for monitoring the two dimensional movements of small fish within fixed areas of estuarine waters and lakes. By using the miniature pinger previously developed for this application, prototype tests of the system were conducted in the York River near the Virginia Institute of Marine Science with two underwater listening stations. Results from these tests showed that the tracking system could position the miniature pinger signals to within + or - 2.5 deg and + or - 135 m at ranges up to 2.5 km. The pingers were implanted in small fish and were successfully tracked at comparable ranges. No changes in either fish behavior or pinger performance were observed as a result of the implantation. Based on results from these prototype tests, it is concluded that the now commercially available system provides an effective approach to underwater tracking of small fish within a fixed area of interest.

A combined boundary-profile and automated data-reduction and analysis system

A portable boundary-layer meteorological data-acquisition and analysis system is described which employs a small tethered balloon and a programmable calculator. The system is capable of measuring pressure, wet- and dry-bulb temperature, wind speed, and temperature fluctuations as a function of height and time. Other quantities, which can be calculated in terms of these, can also be made available in real time. All quantities, measured and calculated, can be printed, plotted, and stored on magnetic tape in the field during the data-acquisition phase of an experiment.

Imaging air pollutants in the near ultraviolet

This paper discusses a program for remote sensing of air pollutants called Multispectral Observation of Pollutants System (MOPS). The broad objective of the program is to photograph 'invisible' gaseous pollutants by combining ultraviolet imaging in several spectral bands with portable data processing equipment. Electronic cameras using solid state imaging arrays of large dynamic range will permit very low contrast images to be electronically ratioed and contrast enhanced, thus bringing out pollutant images which are below the contrast threshold of film. Such photographs will allow synoptic coverage of geographic areas providing source, sink, and flow data on pollutants, and will provide reconnaissance and pointing information for other remote sensors. The principle gases to be mapped by MOPS will be ozone, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

Ergonomics technology

Major areas of research and development in ergonomics technology for space environments are discussed. Attention is given to possible applications of the technology developed by NASA in industrial settings. A group of mass spectrometers for gas analysis capable of fully automatic operation has been developed for atmosphere control on spacecraft; a version for industrial use has been constructed. Advances have been made in personal cooling technology, remote monitoring of medical information, and aerosol particle control. Experience gained by NASA during the design and development of portable life support units has recently been applied to improve breathing equipment used by fire fighters.

Hollow fiber membranes for advanced life support systems

This paper describes an investigation of the practicability of utilizing hollow fiber membranes in vehicular and portable life support system applications. A preliminary screening of potential advanced life support applications resulted in the selection of five applications for feasibility study and testing. As a result of the feasibility study and testing, three applications, heat rejection, deaeration, and bacteria filtration, were chosen for breadboard development testing. Breadboard hardware has been manufactured and tested, and the physical properties of the three hollow fiber membrane assemblies applicable to use aboard future spacecraft have been characterized.

Low-intensity x-ray and gamma-ray imaging device

Low-dosage, low-power X-ray system can be made completely self-contained, allowing fluoroscopy and radiography to be carried out in field and remote locations. New device, known as "lixiscope," can be used with conventional X-ray machine turned down to low level, or, it can be operated with radioisotope source for hand-held portable applications. Originally developed for X-ray astronomy, lixiscope obtains high sensitivity by using intermediate stages of photoelectron conversion and electron amplification to generate image suitable for direct viewing or for recording on film.

Window flaw detection by backscatter lighting

Portable fiber-optic probe detects tiny flaws in transparent materials. Probe transmits light through surface to illuminate interior of material by backscattering off its edges. Light-sensitive contact paper records scratch pattern. Technique can be used for rapid visual checks. Flexible fiber optics are safely used in explosive or flammable areas; they present no hazard of breakage or contamination in controlled environments.

Common-cavity pumped laser

Two lasers linked by dichroic coupler are packaged in single cavity. Resulting system is more compact, efficient, and durable than conventional two-cavity lasers. Such instruments (portable pumped lasers) are needed for spectroscopy in plasma diagnostics in atmospheric research, and in radar-like devices for seeing through dense fog or smoke.

Industries in space to benefit mankind: A view over the next 30 years

New products, services, and energy sources are available to man through the exploitation of the useful attributes of space and space shuttle operations. Benefits include: (1) industrial fuel conservation through the use of electronic teleconferencing, high temperature turbines, and the space processing of materials; (2) improved health care through the use of biotelemetry, teleoperators, and weightless hospitals; (3) more efficient communication systems such as portable telephones, individual warning devices, and direct satellite broadcasting for educational purposes; (4) more abundant crop growth and controlled climate modification by the use of space-based reflectors to direct the light of the sun and moon to specific areas on earth; (5) solar energy utilization; and (6) reduction in radiation hazards through the use of space-based nuclear fusion reactors.

Study of the NASTRAN input/output systems

The basic characteristics of the NASTRAN level 16 I/O subsystem are presented with particular reference to blocking/deblocking aspects, I/O methods used on the IBM, CDC, and UNIVAC machines, definition of basic NASTRAN I/O control tables, and portability of parts of the I/O subsystem to other programs outside the NASTRAN environment are included. An explanation of the IBM primary, secondary, and tertiary files defined by the data definition (DD) cards in the NASTRAN JCL procedure. The explanation is intended to enlighten users as to the purpose of these DD cards, how they relate to one another, and why there are no similar type definition cards required on the CDC and UNIVAC versions. Enhancements designed to increase overall efficiency and decrease core requirements are also recommended.

Software for transferring NASTRAN datablocks between dissimilar computers

Efforts to freely exchange all types of NASTRAN datablocks between the internalized forms in any of three makes of NASTRAN-class computers and that of any other such make are described. The medium used is magnetic tape formatted in BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) character and numerical fields. The method used involves a FORTRAN-coded post-processor and a pre-processor, mostly portable but with a small assembly-coded component peculiar to each make of machine. Snags in a method reported in an earlier NASTRAN colloquium have been overcome and functional requirements upgraded as well.

Selected developments in laser wire stripping

The operation of mechanical and thermal strippers and the early development of laser wire strippers are reviewed. NASA sponsored development of laser wire stripping for space shuttle includes bench-type strippers as well as an advanced portable hand-held stripper which incorporates a miniaturized carbon dioxide laser and a rotating optics unit with a gas-jet assist and debris exhaust. Drives and controls girdle the wire and slit the remaining slug without manual assistance. This unit can strip wire sizes 26 through 12 gage. A larger-capacity hand-held unit for wire sizes through 1/0 gage was built using a neodynium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. The hand-held units have a flexible umbilical cable to an accompanying cart that carries the power supply, gas supply, cooling unit, and the controls.
