Simulation of mass storage systems operating in a large data processing facility

A mass storage simulation program was written to aid system designers in the design of a data processing facility. It acts as a tool for measuring the overall effect on the facility of on-line mass storage systems, and it provides the means of measuring and comparing the performance of competing mass storage systems. The performance of the simulation program is demonstrated.

Measurement of operator workload in an information processing task

This was an experimental study to develop an improved methodology for measuring workload in an information processing task and to assess the effects of shift length and communication density (rate of information flow) on the ability to process and classify verbal messages. Each of twelve subjects was exposed to combinations of three shift lengths and two communication densities in a counterbalanced, repeated measurements experimental design. Results indicated no systematic variation in task performance measures or in other dependent measures as a function of shift length or communication density. This is attributed to the absence of a secondary loading task, an insufficiently taxing work schedule, and the lack of psychological stress. Subjective magnitude estimates of workload showed fatigue (and to a lesser degree, tension) to be a power function of shift length. Estimates of task difficulty and fatigue were initially lower but increased more sharply over time under low density than under high density conditions. An interpretation of findings and recommedations for furture research are included. This research has major implications to human workload problems in information processing of air traffic control verbal data.

An explanation for Iapetus' asymmetric reflectance

Cook and Franklin (1970) consider Iapetus originally to have been coated with about a meter of ice. They suggest that Iapetus' orbital velocity about Saturn has caused an asymmetric erosion of this ice layer which has now nearly laid bare its 'leading' hemisphere, but not as yet the entire 'trailing' hemisphere. Rather than an erosion process which operates more actively on the leading side, this paper considers an ice deposition mechanism operating more actively on the trailing side. The two main assumptions used are (1) that there are more icy than rocky meteoroids in Saturn's environment, and (2) that some portion of each icy meteoroid will stick to a surface at collision velocities less than 2.4 km per sec, but will completely vaporize itself at greater velocities. A meteoroid can have the minimum collision velocity of about 1.7 km per sec with Iapetus only if their velocity vectors are nearly parallel, and under these conditions such collisions would tend to be with the trailing hemisphere. Collisions with the leading hemisphere will tend to be at a much higher velocity.

Development assessment of wash water reclamation

An analytical study assessment of state-of-the-art wash water reclamation technology is presented. It covers all non-phase-change unit operations, unit processes and subsystems currently under development by NASA. Each approach to wash water reclamation is described in detail. Performance data are given together with the projected weights and sizes of key components and subsystems. It is concluded that a simple multifiltration subsystem composed of surface-type cartridge filters, carbon adsorption and ion exchange resins is the most attractive approach for spacecraft wash water reclamation in earth orbital missions of up to 10 years in duration.

Geochemistry

The most effective strategy for the geochemical study of a planet is to proceed systematically with the mineralogical and chemical characterization of its materials in accordance with geologically determined priorities. It is insufficient merely to analyze chemically the surface rocks. To appreciate the meaning of a chemical analysis, some assessment must be made of the geologic history of the sample - what its source and mode of origin are and what processes have operated upon the sample to cause chemical fractionation. Determination of mineralogy, texture, lithology, and other properties of the rock that might be relevant to origin is, therefore, necessary.

ALTKAL: An optimum linear filter for GEOS-3 altimeter data

ALTKAL is a computer program designed to smooth sea surface height data obtained from the GEOS 3 altimeter, and to produce minimum variance estimates of sea surface height and sea surface slopes, along with their standard derivations. The program operates by processing the data through a Kalman filter in both the forward and backward directions, and optimally combining the results. The sea surface height signal is considered to have a geoid signal, modeled by a third order Gauss-Markov process, corrupted by additive white noise. The governing parameters for the signal and noise processes are the signal correlation length and the signal-to-noise ratio. Mathematical derivations of the filtering and smoothing algorithms are presented. The smoother characteristics are illustrated by giving the frequency response, the data weighting sequence and the transfer function of a realistic steady-state smoother example. Based on nominal estimates for geoidal undulation amplitude and correlation length, standard deviations for the estimated sea surface height and slope are 12 cm and 3 arc seconds, respectively.

Production of C-14 and neutrons in red giants

We have examined the effects of mixing various amounts of hydrogen-rich material into the intershell convective region of red giants undergoing helium shell flashes. We find that significant amounts of C-14 can be produced via the N-14(n, p)C-14 reaction. If substantial portions of this intershell region are mixed out into the envelopes of red giants, then C-14 may be detectable in evolved stars. We find a neutron flux many orders of magnitude above the flux required for the classical s-process, and thus an intermediate neutron process (i-process) may operate in evolved red giants. In all cases studied we find substantial enhancements of O-17. These mixing models offer a plausible explanation of the observations of enhanced O-17 in the carbon star IRC 10216. For certain physical conditions we find significant enhancements of N-15 in the intershell region.

Wash water reclamation technology for advanced manned spacecraft

The results of an analytical study and assessment of state-of-the-art wash water reclamation technology for advanced manned spacecraft is presented. All non-phase-change unit operations, unit processes, and subsystems currently under development by NASA are considered. Included among these are: filtration, ultrafiltration, carbon adsorption, ion exchange, chemical pretreatment, reverse osmosis, hyperfiltration, and certain urea removal techniques. Performance data are given together with the projected weights and sizes of key components and subsystems. In the final assessment, a simple multifiltration approach consisting of surface-type cartridge filters, carbon adsorption and ion exchange resins receives the highest rating for six-man orbital missions of up to 10 years in duration.

Removal of contaminant gases from an electrolytic urine pretreatment process

The effluent gas stream from an electrolytic urine pretreatment process was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy and wet chemical methods to determine its composition. The major constituents were identified as: hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, water vapor, and chlorine. The trace impurities were chlorinated light hydrocarbons, and a number of other organic impurities in the low ppm range. Several methods of removing all of the undesirable gases to levels acceptable for return to a space cabin atmosphere were investigated experimentally. A subsystem concept comprised of the following sequential unit processes and operations was successfully demonstrated: (1) raw urine scrubbing, (2) silica gel sorption, (3) dilution with cabin air, and (4) catalytic oxidation.

The impact of H2S emissions on future geothermal power generation - The Geysers region, California

The future potential for geothermal power generation in the Geysers region of California is as much as 10 times the current 502 MW(e) capacity. However, environmental factors such as H2S emissions and institutional considerations may play the primary role in determining the rate and ultimate level of development. In this paper a scenario of future geothermal generation capacity and H2S emissions in the Geysers region is presented. Problem areas associated with H2S emissions, H2S abatement processes, plant operations, and government agency resources are described. The impact of H2S emissions on future development and the views of effected organizations are discussed. Potential actions needed to remove these constraints are summarized.
