Aerosol impacts on isolated deep convection: findings from TRACER

This study focuses on quantifying the conditional relationship between aerosol and convective precipitation properties of isolated deep convective clouds (DCCs) in the Houston–Galveston region, after adjusting for confounding effects. We leverage comprehensive ground-based observations from the TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (TRACER) to estimate aerosol effects on convective echo top height (ETH), intensity, and area separately. Our results show that greater aerosol number concentrations generally have a limited impact on these convective properties, showing relationships consistent with the possibility of both invigoration and suppression effects. Under certain conditions, where ultrafine particles are abundant, aerosols exhibit a positive effect on ETH, increasing it by about 1 km. However, it is inevitable to consider measurement uncertainties and the limitations of temporal and spatial resolution in the data, as these factors can further contribute to uncertainties in our estimates. In DCCs associated with sea breezes, the estimated aerosol effects on DCCs are found to be more pronounced. However, this heightened effect could be attributed to the exclusion of key confounders such as boundary layer updrafts in the analysis.

A high-resolution unified observational data product of mesoscale convective systems and isolated deep convection in the United States for 2004–2017

Deep convection possesses markedly distinct properties at different spatiotemporal scales. We present an original high-resolution (4 km, hourly) unified data product of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) and isolated deep convection (IDC) in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains and examine their climatological characteristics from 2004 to 2017. The data product is produced by applying an updated Flexible Object Tracker algorithm to hourly satellite brightness temperature, radar reflectivity, and precipitation datasets. Analysis of the data product shows that MCSs are much larger and longer-lasting than IDC, but IDC occurs about 100 times more frequently than MCSs, with a mean convective intensity comparable to that of MCSs. Hence both MCS and IDC are essential contributors to precipitation east of the Rocky Mountains, although their precipitation shows significantly different spatiotemporal characteristics. IDC precipitation concentrates in summer in the Southeast with a peak in the late afternoon, while MCS precipitation is significant in all seasons, especially for spring and summer in the Great Plains. The spatial distribution of MCS precipitation amounts varies by season, while diurnally, MCS precipitation generally peaks during nighttime except in the Southeast. Potential uncertainties and limitations of the data product are also discussed. The data product is useful for investigating the atmospheric environments and physical processes associated with different types of convective systems; quantifying the impacts of convection on hydrology, atmospheric chemistry, and severe weather events; and evaluating and improving the representation of convective processes in weather and climate models.

Draft genome sequencing and assembly of Favolaschia claudopus CIRM-BRFM 2984 isolated from oak limbs

Favolaschia claudopus, a wood-inhabiting basidiomycete of the Mycenaceae family, is considered an invasive species that has recently spread from Oceania to Europe. The CIRM-BRFM 2984 strain of this fungus was originally isolated from a basidiome collected from the fallen limb of a decayed oak tree in Southwest France. The genome sequence of this strain shared characteristics with other Mycenaceae species, including a large genome size and enriched content of protein-coding genes. The genome sequence provided here will facilitate further investigation on the factors that contribute to the successful global dissemination of F. claudopus.

Electrically conductive fibers thermally isolate temperature sensor

Mounting assembly provides thermal isolation and an electrical path for an unbacked thermal sensor. The sensor is suspended in the center of a plastic mounting ring from four plastic fibers, two of which are coated with an electrically conductive material and connected to electrically conductive coatings on the ring.
