On the polarization and origin of auroral kilometric radiation

Radio emissions were measured by the Hawkeye 1 satellite at low altitudes over the Southern Hemisphere along the auroral field lines, in the region where the intense nightside auroral kilometric radiation is believed to be generated. These measurements provide new evidence on the mode of propagation and origin of the auroral kilometric radiation. At low altitudes the auroral kilometric radiation is consistently observed to have a low frequency cutoff at the local electron gyrofrequency, f(-) sub g. Since the electron plasma frequency, f(-) sub p, is usually much smaller than f(-) sub g in the region where these observations are obtained, this cutoff corresponds closely with the propagation cutoff for the right-hand mode of propagation. These observations, therefore, provide a strong indication that the auroral kilometric radiation is right-hand polarized in agreement with previous conclusions made on the basis of the angular distribution of this radiation.

Proximity sensor technology for manipulator end effectors

Optical proximity sensing devices suitable for hand mounting on a manipulator are described, which use near IR LED light sources operating at 0.94 micron and silicon detectors, with appropriate signal processing so that the data are unaffected by ambient light. Laboratory tests with simple proximity sensors are described. Extension of the same techniques to yield multipoint or digital sensors is also discussed. A cooperative proximity sensor concept is described, which employs a composite mirror attached to the work piece to generate an unambiguous set of position and orientation signals. A very rudimentary experiment in local control of a manipulator with a pair of hand mounted proximity sensors is also described.

Cost benefit analysis of the transfer of NASA remote sensing technology to the state of Georgia

The author has identified the following significant results. First order benefits can generally be quantified, thus allowing quantitative comparisons of candidate land cover data systems. A meaningful dollar evaluation of LANDSAT can be made by a cost comparison with equally effective data systems. Users of LANDSAT data can be usefully categorized as performing three general functions: planning, permitting, and enforcing. The value of LANDSAT data to the State of Georgia is most sensitive to the parameters: discount rate, digitization cost, and photo acquisition cost. Under a constrained budget, LANDSAT could provide digitized land cover information roughly seven times more frequently than could otherwise be obtained. Thus on one hand, while the services derived from LANDSAT data in comparison to the baseline system has a positive net present value, on the other hand if the budget were constrained, more frequent information could be provided using the LANDSAT system than otherwise be obtained.

Models for quasi-periodic electric fields and associated electron precipitation in the auroral zone

Quasi-periodic electric fields observed in the nighttime auroral oval and in the polar cleft had periods of between 0.5 and 3 s and amplitudes from 2 to 30 mV/m and exhibited left-hand and right-hand elliptical polarization. The events in the auroral oval were associated with substorms and visual auroral activity, and the spectral and polarization properties of the observed fields suggest that they represented the electric components of Pc 1 or Pi 1 micropulsations. One possibility is that the micropulsations result from Birkeland current chopping by an unstable double layer located at an altitude of approximately one earth radius. In this interpretation, the double layer is assumed to accelerate the observed electrons, the electron flux variations being due either to the inherent variations of the double layer or to its interaction with the micropulsations.

Flight service evaluation of Kevlar-49 epoxy composite panels in wide-bodied commercial transport aircraft

Kevlar-49 fairing panels, installed as flight service components on three L-1011s, were inspected after five years' service. There are six Kevlar-49 panels on each aircraft: a left-hand and right-hand set of a wing-body sandwich fairing; a solid laminate under-wing fillet panel; and a 150 C (300 F) service aft engine fairing. The fairings have accumulated a total of 40,534 hours, with one ship set having 16,091 hours service as of Feb. 11, 1979. The Kevlar-49 components were found to be performing satisfactorily in service with no major problems, or any condition requiring corrective action. The only defects noted were minor impact damage, and a minor degree of fastener hole fraying and elongation. These are for the most part comparable to damage noted on fiberglass fairings.

Fabrication of high efficiency and radiation resistant GaAs solar cells

Systematic improvements in fabrication yield were obtained by appropriate control of the liquid phase epitaxial growth process, contact fabrication and surface preparation. To improve radiation hardness, the junction depth was decreased while overcoming the penalty in decreased solar cell efficiency which tends to go hand-in-hand with the reduction of junction depth in (AlGa) As-GaAs solar cells. Cells were made with an AMO efficiency of 18% and a junction depth of 0.5 micrometers, as compared to junction depths on the order of 1.0 micrometers. With respect to the damage caused by proton irradiation, the nature of the observed damage was correlated to the energy and penetration depth of the damaging protons.

Proton-driven electromagnetic instabilities in high-speed solar wind streams

Electromagnetic instabilities of the field-aligned, right-hand circularly polarized magnetosonic wave and the left-hand circularly polarized Alfven wave driven by two drifted proton components are analyzed for model parameters determined from Imp 7 solar wind proton data measured during high-speed flow conditions. Growth rates calculated using bi-Lorentzian forms for the main and beam proton as well as core and halo electron velocity distributions do not differ significantly from those calculated using bi-Maxwellian forms. Using distribution parameters determined from 17 measured proton spectra, we show that considering the uncertainties the magnetosonic wave may be linearly stable and the Alfven wave is linearly unstable. Because proton velocity distribution function shapes are observed to persist for times long compared to the proton gyroperiod, the latter result suggests that linear stability theory fails for proton-driven ion cyclotron waves in the high-speed solar wind.

Temporal spectral measurements of corn and soybean crops

A ground-based, hand-held radiometer, configured to measure red and photographic infrared spectral radiances, was successfully used to collect in situ temporal spectral measurements of corn and soybean crops. Significant relationships were found between the radiance data and the biomass, plant height, percentage crop cover, percentage crop chlorosis, and percentage leaf loss. The results of this experiment show conclusively that hand-held radiometers can be used to collect spectral data that are highly correlated to several agronomic variables. These findings suggest approaches for agronomic research, and confirm the value of remote sensing of agricultural targets.

Computer quantitation of coronary angiograms

A computer technique is being developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to automate the measurement of coronary stenosis. A Vanguard 35mm film transport is optically coupled to a Spatial Data System vidicon/digitizer which in turn is controlled by a DEC PDP 11/55 computer. Programs have been developed to track the edges of the arterial shadow, to locate normal and atherosclerotic vessel sections and to measure percent stenosis. Multiple frame analysis techniques are being investigated that involve on the one hand, averaging stenosis measurements from adjacent frames, and on the other hand, averaging adjacent frame images directly and then measuring stenosis from the averaged image. For the latter case, geometric transformations are used to force registration of vessel images whose spatial orientation changes.

The interaction between giant gaseous protoplanets and the primitive solar nebula

The manner in which a giant gaseous protoplanet becomes embedded in the primitive solar nebula determines surface boundary conditions which must be used in studying the evolution of such objects. On the one hand, if the system resembles a contact binary system, then the envelope of the protoplanet should approach the entropy of the surrounding nebula. On the other hand angular momentum transfer by resonance and tidal effects between the nebula and the protoplanet may cause the nebula to exhibit a zone of avoidance near the protoplanet, thus inhibiting exchange of material. This problem has been studied with a computer program developed by D. N. C. Lin which simulates disk hydrodynamics by particle motions with dissipation. These studies suggest that for expected values of the protoplanet/protosun mass ratios, significant inhibition of mass exchange is likely, so that it is a reasonable next step to undertake protoplanet evolution studies with the imposition of minimum protoplanet surface temperatures.

Wire harness twisting aid

Long wire bundles twist into uniform spiral harnesses with help of simple apparatus. Wires pass through spacers and through hand-held tool with hole for each wire. Ends are attached to low speed bench motor. As motor turns, operator moves hand tool away forming smooth twists in wires between motor and tool. Technique produces harnesses that generate less radio-frequency interference than do irregularly twisted cables.

Narrow-band Jovian Kilometric Radiation: a New Radio Component

A new component of Jupiter's radio spectrum is investigated. The component emits in a very narrow bandwidth (less than or equal to 40 kHz) near 100 kHz. Its waveform is a very smooth and gradual rise and subsequent fall in intensity, usually over two hours. The emission is polarized with left hand polarization associated with the Jovian northern magnetic hemisphere and right hand with the south. The emissions deviation from a strict system 3 rotation period repetition rate is examined. The emission source of the narrow band component which rotates 3 to 5 percent slower than all other forms of Jovian radio emission is determined from propagation considerations, coupled with the observed lack of corotation, to a source region near the equatorial plane at the outer edge of the Io plasma torus. The narrow band KOM (nKOM) form is examined using observations from the PRA instrument. The spectrum and occurrence statistics are described and contrasted with the tapered or broadband KOM (bKOM) characteristics.

Implications of the high-state iron-line feature and soft X-ray emission of Hercules X-1

The interpretation that the soft X-ray emission of Her X-1 is due to reprocessing of the primary hard X-rays intercepted by a plasma layer in the Alfven surface imposes quite a stringent - but not an unreasonable - constraint on its parameters. By using the Alfven shell parameters constrained by this interpretation, the degree of ionization of the Alfven shell is calculated. Because the flux of hard X-ray from the neutron star is greatly attenuated inside the Alfven shell, except for a skin depth from its inner surface, the degree of ionization is determined by photoionization due to soft X-rays produced within the Alfven shell. On one hand, the large soft X-ray luminosity, which is about the same as the hard X-ray luminosity, indicates that a substantial fraction of primary hard X-rays is absorbed by the Alfven shell. On the other hand, the fact that the hard X-ray spectrum of Her X-1 observed during the high state shows neither a significant absorption feature down to about 3 keV nor an iron K-absorption dip tells us that the hard X-rays observed at the earth are mostly not reprocessed. This apparent conflict is resolved if the Alfven shell is clumpy (i.e., made of streams or blobs). The observed iron-line feature around 6.5 keV (E.W. about 300 keV) is explained by fluorescent iron K photons produced as a by-product of reprocessing of the hard X-rays by the Alfven shell; for this a large enhancement of the iron abundance with respect to the solar value is not required.

Whistler mode wave packets in the earth's foreshock region

Measurements of the velocity of discrete whistler-mode wave packets in the region upstream of the earth's bow shock are presented. Data from the dual magnetometers aboard the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft was used to determine the time delay between the appearance of a wavefront at each spacecraft in order to obtain the wave velocity in the spacecraft frame, and from it the intrinsic wave phase velocity. Results from the 11 events characterized by sufficiently large velocities reveal the wave packets to exhibit a nearly perfectly circular polarization with the packet field rotating in the left-hand sense about the ambient field direction in the spacecraft frame. In the plasma rest frame, these waves are found to be right-handed polarized waves with frequencies several times the proton gyrofrequency which are attempting to propagate upstream against the solar wind but are in fact being carried towards the earth by the solar wind flow.
