Neutron stars - General review

A review is presented of those properties of neutron stars upon which there is general agreement and of those areas which currently remain in doubt. Developments in theoretical physics of neutron star interiors are summarized with particular attention devoted to hyperon interactions and the structure of interior layers. Determination of energy states and the composition of matter is described for successive layers, beginning with the surface and proceeding through the central region into the core. Problems encountered in determining the behavior of matter in the ultra-high density regime are discussed, and the effects of the magnetic field of a neutron star are evaluated along with the behavior of atomic structures in the field. The evolution of a neutron star is outlined with discussion centering on carbon detonation, cooling, vibrational damping, rotation, and pulsar glitches. The role of neutron stars in cosmic-ray propagation is considered.

An evaluation of differential Omega for general aviation area navigation

This paper reports on a study which compared the expected cost and performance of Differential Omega with that of Loran-C and VORTAC for general aviation area navigation. Analysis is directed toward a comparison of the systems with respect to specified performance parameters and the cost-effectiveness of each system in relation to the specifications. Loran-C offers the highest performance with respect to accuracy. Differential Omega requires the least expenditure. It was found cost ineffective to attempt to obtain complete coverage by expanding the existing VORTAC system.

A general model for the textural evolution of lunar soil

The investigation reported is concerned with the qualitative expansion of an earlier model developed by Lindsay (1971, 1972, 1973). Questions regarding the maturity of lunar soils are examined. A multivariate model related to textural maturity is considered, taking into account mean and standard deviations, the asymmetry of the grain size curve, the kurtosis anomaly, and pyroclastic materials. It is concluded that the mean grain size and the standard deviation of the lunar soil can be used as general indicators of the textural maturity of the soil anywhere on the lunar surface.

Resonance line transfer with partial redistribution. IV - A generalized formulation for lines with common upper states. V - The solar Ca II lines

A generalized formulation is given for treating partial redistribution effects in transfer problems in resonance lines with common upper states. The formulation allows explicitly for the possibility that several spectral lines may arise in transitions from a given upper level to several sharp lower levels, including, for example, the ground state and metastable states. Line profiles for the Ca II H and K lines have been calculated, accounting for the partial frequency coherence of scattered photons. These profiles are compared with calculations made with identical atomic and atmospheric models but assuming complete redistribution. Very significant differences between the profiles obtained using these two different physical descriptions of the scattering process are found, and it is now apparent that the assumption of complete redistribution is a serious oversimplification of the actual physical situation. The results question the validity of equating brightness temperatures observed at K(sub 1) in stellar spectra with minimum temperatures in stellar chromospheres; it appears likely that such a procedure will systematically underestimate the value of T-min.

Experimental test of general relativity using time-delay data from Mariner 6 and Mariner 7

Range and Doppler data from Mariner 6 and Mariner 7 have been analyzed for purposes of measuring the effect of the sun's gravity field on S-band radio transmissions to the spacecraft. The prediction of general relativity, that the round-trip time delays between the station and the spacecraft will be increased by about 200 microsec near superior conjunction, has been verified with an uncertainty of 3 per cent or less. The dominant error source on the experiment is the stochastic nongravitational forces which act on the spacecraft and which limit the accuracy of the determination of the Mariner orbits. Effects of free coronal electrons on the round-trip propagation also make the measurement difficult, but the coronal contribution to the error is only about 1 per cent. Separate analyses of data from Mariner 6 and Mariner 7 yield two values near unity for the parameter gamma* which differ by about 0.3 per cent from each other. This and other considerations suggest that the error in the experiment is perhaps less than 3 per cent.

Remote sensor digital image data analysis using the General Electric Image 100 analysis system (a study of analysis speed, cost, and performance)

The author has identified the following significant results. It was found that the high speed man machine interaction capability is a distinct advantage of the image 100; however, the small size of the digital computer in the system is a definite limitation. The system can be highly useful in an analysis mode in which it complements a large general purpose computer. The image 100 was found to be extremely valuable in the analysis of aircraft MSS data where the spatial resolution begins to approach photographic quality and the analyst can exercise interpretation judgements and readily interact with the machine.

The economic impact of drag in general aviation

General aviation aircraft fuel consumption and operating costs are closely linked to drag reduction methods. Improvements in airplane drag are envisioned for new models; their effects will be in the 5 to 10% range. Major improvements in fuel consumption over existing turbofan airplanes will be the combined results of improved aerodynamics plus additional effects from advanced turbofan engine designs.

A General Simulator Using State Estimation for a Space Tug Navigation System

A general simulation program is presented (GSP) involving nonlinear state estimation for space vehicle flight navigation systems. A complete explanation of the iterative guidance mode guidance law, derivation of the dynamics, coordinate frames, and state estimation routines are given so as to fully clarify the assumptions and approximations involved so that simulation results can be placed in their proper perspective. A complete set of computer acronyms and their definitions as well as explanations of the subroutines used in the GSP simulator are included. To facilitate input/output, a complete set of compatable numbers, with units, are included to aid in data development. Format specifications, output data phrase meanings and purposes, and computer card data input are clearly spelled out. A large number of simulation and analytical studies were used to determine the validity of the simulator itself as well as various data runs.

A generalized correlation of experimental flat-plate collector performance

A generalized collector performance correlation was derived and shown by experimental verification to be of the proper form to account for the majority of the variable conditions encountered both in outdoor and in indoor collector tests. This correlation permits a determination of collector parameters which are essentially nonvarying under conditions which do vary randomly (outdoors) or conditions which vary in a controlled manner (indoors - simulator). It was shown that correlation of the experimental performance of collectors allows the following: (1) comparisons of different collector designs; (2) collector performance prediction under conditions that differ from the conditions of the test program; and (3) monitoring performance degradation effects.

Attenuation of sound in ducts with acoustic treatment: A generalized approximate equation

A generalized approximate equation for duct lining sound attenuation is presented. The specification of two parameters, the maximum possible attenuation and the optimum wall acoustic impedance is shown to completely determine the sound attenuation for any acoustic mode at any selected wall impedance. The equation is based on the nearly circular shape of the constant attenuation contours in the wall acoustic impedance plane. For impedances far from the optimum, the equation reduces to Morse's approximate expression. The equation can be used for initial acoustic liner design. Not least important is the illustrative nature of the solutions which provide an understanding of the duct propagation problem usually obscured in the exact calculations. Sample calculations using the approximate attenuation equation show that the peak and the bandwidth of the sound attenuation spectrum can be represented by quite simple functions of the ratio of actual wall acoustic resistance to optimum resistance.

Optically coupled digital altitude encoder for general aviation altimeters

An optically coupled pressure altitude encoder which can be incorporated into commercially available inexpensive general aviation altimeters was successfully developed. The encoding of pressure altitude is accomplished in 100-ft (30.48-m) increments from -1000 to 20,000ft (-304.8 to 6096 m). The prototype encoders were retrofitted into two different internal altimeter configurations. A prototype encoder was checked for accuracy of transition points and environmental effects. Each altimeter configuration, with the encoder incorporated, was laboratory tested for performance and was subsequently flight-tested over the specified altitude range. With few exceptions, the assembled altimeter-encoder met aeronautical standards for altimeters and encoders. Design changes are suggested to improve performance to meet required standards consistently.

Digital snow mapping technique using LANDSAT data and General Electric IMAGE 100 system

In this study, a technique and procedures using General Electric IMAGE 100 system were derived for performing a snow cover analysis of small watersheds for quasi-operational application. The study area was the Wind River Mountains of west central Wyoming. A small watershed, namely, Dinwoody Creek was selected as a test site. LANDSAT data and U-2 imagery were used in the analysis. From a minimal snowcover LANDSAT scene, multispectral analysis was performed yielding the distribution of forest, bare rock, grassland, water, and snow within the watershed. The forest and bare rock themes were saved and registered with other scenes containing greater snow cover. Likewise, elevation contours from a digitized map were stored and superimposed over the snowpack areas.
