Magnetotransport properties of the topological nodal-line semimetal CaCdSn

Topological nodal-line semimetals support protected band crossings, which form nodal lines or nodal loops between the valence and conduction bands and exhibit novel transport phenomena. Here we address the topological state of the nodal-line semimetal candidate material CaCdSn, and report magnetotransport properties of its single crystals grown by the self-flux method. In this work, our first-principles calculations show that the electronic structure of CaCdSn harbors a single nodal loop around the Γ point in the absence of spin-orbit coupling effects. The nodal crossings in CaCdSn are found to lie above the Fermi level and yield a Fermi surface that consists of both electron and hole pockets. CaCdSn exhibits high mobility (μ ≈ 3.44 × 10 4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ) and displays a field-induced metal-semiconductor-like crossover with a plateau in resistivity at low temperature. We observe an extremely large and quasilinear nonsaturating transverse as well as longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures (≈ 7.44 × 10 3 % and ≈ 1.71 × 10 3 %, respectively, at 4 K). We also briefly discuss possible reasons behind such a large quasilinear magnetoresistance and its connection with the nontrivial band structure of CaCdSn.

Giant magnetic anisotropy energy and long coherence time of uranium substitution on defected Al 2 O 3 (0001)

Nanomagnets with giant magnetic anisotropy energy and long coherence time are desired for various technological innovations such as quantum information procession and storage. Based on the first-principles calculations and model analyses, we demonstrate that a single uranium atom substituting Al on the Al 2 O 3 (0001) surface may have high structural stability and large magnetic anisotropy energy up to 48 meV per uranium atom. As the magnetization resides in the localized $\textit{f}$ shell and is not much involved in chemical bonding with neighbors, long coherence time up to ~1.6mS can be achieved for the quantum spin states. These results in this work suggest a different strategy for the search of ultrasmall magnetic units for diverse applications in the quantum information era.

Out-of-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy Engineered via Band Distortion in Two-Dimensional Materials

We unveil the connection between magnetic anisotropy and band structures in Γ-specialized In 2 Se 3 /Fe 3 GeTe 2 heterostructure, through first-principles calculations. A significant band distortion occurs near the Γ point with a formed valley. As the band-distortion-caused valley moves relative to the quasivalence band maximum, the magnetic anisotropy switches between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. Such a rule applies to either the strained or polarization-switched In 2 Se 3 /Fe 3 GeTe 2 heterostructure. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate the feasibility of predicting the magnetic anisotropy by band structure modification in two-dimensional magnetic systems.

Evidence of Ba-substitution induced spin-canting in the magnetic Weyl semimetal EuCd 2 As 2

Recently EuCd 2 As 2 was predicted to be a magnetic Weyl semimetal with a lone pair of Weyl nodes generated by A-type antiferromagnetism and protected by a rotational symmetry. However, it was soon discovered that the actual magnetic structure broke the rotational symmetry and internal pressure was later suggested as a route to stabilize the desired magnetic state. In this work we test this prediction by synthesizing a series of Eu 1-x BaxCd 2 As 2 single crystals and studying their structural, magnetic, and transport properties via both experimental techniques and first-principles calculations. We find that small concentrations of Ba (~3%–10%) lead to a small out-of-plane canting of the Eu moment. However, for higher concentrations this effect is suppressed and a nearly in-plane model is recovered. Studying the transport properties we find that all compositions show evidence of an anomalous Hall effect dominated by the intrinsic mechanism as well as large negative magnetoresistances in the longitudinal channel. A nonmonotonic evolution of the transport properties is seen across the series which correlates to the proposed canting suggesting canting may enhance the topological effects. Careful density functional theory calculations using an all-electron approach revise prior predictions finding a purely ferromagnetic ground state with in-plane moments for both the EuCd 2 As 2 and Eu 0.5 Ba 0.5 Cd 2 As 2 compounds, corroborating our experimental findings. This work suggests that Ba substitution can tune the magnetic properties in unexpected ways which correlate to changes in measures of topological properties, encouraging future work to locate the ideal Ba concentration for Eu moment canting.

Prediction of superconductivity and topological aspects in single-layer β -Bi 2 Pd

Topological superconductors, characterized by topologically nontrivial states residing in a superconducting gap, are a recently discovered class of materials having Majorana fermions. The interplay of superconductivity and topological states gives rise to opportunities for achieving such topological superconductors in condensed matter systems. Up to now, several single-material topological superconductors in this form have been theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. Here, using the first-principles calculations, we study the superconducting single-layer β-Bi 2 Pd. In this work, the electronic density of states near Fermi level of this monolayer are dominated by the Bi-p and Pd-d orbitals, forming a two-band Fermi surface with multiclass sheets. The presence of soft phonon bands, in cooperation with the electron susceptibility, accounts for electron-phonon superconductivity of single-layer β-Bi 2 Pd. With the centrosymmetric structure, single-layer β-Bi 2 Pd possesses a continuous gap over the whole Brillouin zone and topological Dirac-like states at its one-dimensional boundary. The present findings would lead to the expectation of one-dimensional topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states in a monolayer candidate of β-Bi 2 Pd with intrinsic full-gap superconductivity.

Magnetic multilayer edges in Bernal-stacked hexagonal boron nitride

Single-layer h-BN is known to have edges with unique magnetism; however, in the commonly fabricated multilayer AA'-h-BN, edge relaxations occur that create interlayer bonds and eliminate the unpaired electrons at the edge. Recently, a robust method of growing the unconventional Bernal-stacked h-BN (AB-h-BN) has been reported. Here, we use theoretical approaches to investigate the nitrogen-terminated zigzag edges in AB-h-BN that can be formed in a controlled fashion using a high-energy electron beam. We find that these "open"edges remain intact in bilayer and multilayer AB-h-BN, enabling researchers potentially to investigate these edge states experimentally. We also investigate the thermodynamics of the spin configurations at the edge by constructing a lattice model that is based on parameters extracted from a set of first-principles calculations. We find that the edge spins in neighboring layers interact very weakly, resulting in a sequence of independent spin chains in multilayer samples. By solving this model using Monte Carlo simulations, we can determine nm-scale correlation lengths at liquid-N 2 temperatures and lower. At low temperatures, these edges may be utilized in magnetoresistance and spintronics applications.

Ultrafast formation of a transient two-dimensional diamondlike structure in twisted bilayer graphene

Due to the absence of matching carbon atoms at honeycomb centers with carbon atoms in adjacent graphene sheets, theorists predicted that a sliding process is needed to form AA, AB', or ABC stacking when directly converting graphite into sp 3 bonded diamond. Here, using twisted bilayer graphene, which naturally provides AA and AB' stacking configurations, we report the ultrafast formation of a transient two-dimensional diamondlike structure (which is not observed in aligned graphene) under femtosecond laser irradiation. This photoinduced phase transition is evidenced by the appearance of bond lengths of 1.94 and 3.14 Å in the time-dependent differential pair distribution function using MeV ultrafast electron diffraction. Molecular dynamics and first-principles calculation indicate that sp 3 bonds nucleate at AA and AB' stacked areas in a moiré pattern. This work sheds light on the direct graphite-to-diamond transformation mechanism, which has not been fully understood for more than 60 years.

Temperature-dependent electronic structure in a higher-order topological insulator candidate EuIn 2 As 2

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) have enticed enormous research interests owing to their novelty in supporting gapless states along the hinges of a crystal. Despite several theoretical predictions, enough experimental confirmation of the HOTI state in crystalline solids is still lacking. Here, it is shown that interplay between topology and magnetism can give rise to various magnetic topological states, including HOTI and axion insulator states. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with the first-principles calculations, we report a systematic study of the electronic structure and its evolution across the magnetic phase transition in EuIn 2 As 2 which possesses an antiferromagnetic ground state below 16 K. Antiferromagnetic EuIn 2 As 2 has been predicted to host both the axion insulator and the HOTI states. We directly observe the linearly dispersing holelike bands crossing the Fermi level and the change in their dispersion across the magnetic phase transition. Our paper points to EuIn 2 As 2 as being a promising material for the exploration of interplay between topology and magnetism.

Probing magnetic configuration-mediated topological phases via high harmonic generation in MnBi 2 Te 4

Compared to a space group, a magnetic space group is much more complex, as both magnetic structure and magnetic moment direction can change the original symmetries of materials. The interplay between space symmetry and magnetism can generate versatile novel quantum states. However, detecting these topological phases experimentally, achieved through manipulating the magnetic configuration, has been restricted. It is mainly because the intrinsic link between the theory and the available experimental technique remains elusive. Here, we show that high harmonic generation (HHG) can identify these topological quantum states. In this work, we use rhombohedral MnBi 2 Te 4 film as an example, and analyze the symmetry-dependent harmonic order and signal by combining first-principles calculations and time-dependent Liouville equation numerical computations. Our results provide a fundamental basis for using HHG to study the topological quantum phases mediated by various magnetic configurations that can be easily realized by applying an external magnetic field.

Ultrafast spin-nematic and ferroelectric phase transitions induced by femtosecond light pulses

We report, optically induced phase transitions of the manganite Pr 1/3 Ca 2/3 MnO 3 have been simulated by using a model Hamiltonian that captures the dynamics of strongly correlated charge, orbital, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom. Its parameters have been extracted from first-principles calculations. Beyond a critical intensity of a femtosecond light pulse, the material undergoes an ultrafast and nonthermal magnetic phase transition from a noncollinear to collinear antiferromagnetic phase. The light-pulse excites selectively either a spin-nematic or a ferroelectric phase, depending on the light polarization. The behavior can be traced to an optically induced ferromagnetic coupling between Mn trimers, i.e., polarons which are delocalized over three Mn sites. The polarization guides the polymerization of the polaronic crystal into distinct patterns of ferromagnetic chains determining the target phase.

Moiré quantum chemistry: Charge transfer in transition metal dichalcogenide superlattices

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers have recently emerged as a robust and tunable moiré system for studying and designing correlated electron physics. In this Rapid Communication, by combining a large-scale first-principles calculation and continuum model approach, we provide an electronic structure theory that maps long-period TMD heterobilayer superlattices onto diatomic crystals with cations and anions. We find that the interplay between the moiré potential and Coulomb interaction leads to filling-dependent charge transfer between different moiré superlattice regions. Further, we show that the insulating state at half filling found in recent experiments on WSe 2 /WS 2 is a charge-transfer insulator rather than a Mott-Hubbard insulator. Our work reveals the richness of simplicity in moiré quantum chemistry.

Tuning Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in magnetic bilayers with a ferroelectric substrate

Our group performed systematic first-principles calculations to explore the possibility of manipulating Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs) in heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers with ferroelectric (FE) polarization of a PbTiO 3 (PTO) substrate. Significantly, both the sign and magnitude of the DMI can be tailored by the FE polarization reversal in PTO. Moreover, the DMIs of Ir/Co/PTO and Ir/Fe/PTO can achieve large values (|d| > 10 meV) under the influence of an upward electric polarization of PTO. Our findings provided useful strategies for enhancing and tailoring DMIs in complex heterostructures and paved the way for the development of DMI-based devices with ultralow power consumption.

Flat-band-induced itinerant ferromagnetism in RbCo 2 Se 2

ACo 2 Se 2 (A=K,Rb,Cs) is a homologue of the iron-based superconductor, AFe 2 Se 2 . From a comprehensive study of RbCo 2 Se 2 via measurements of magnetization, transport, neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first-principle calculations, we identify a ferromagnetic order accompanied by an orbital-dependent spin-splitting of the electronic dispersions. However, we identify the ordered moment to be dominated by a d x 2 –y 2 flatband near the Fermi level, which exhibits the largest spin splitting across the ferromagnetic transition, suggesting an itinerant origin of the ferromagnetism. In the broader context of the iron-based superconductors, we find this d x 2 –y 2 flatband to be a common feature in the band structures of both iron chalcogenides and iron pnictides, accessible via heavy electron doping.

Observation of a chiral wave function in the twofold-degenerate quadruple Weyl system BaPtGe

Topological states in quantum materials are defined by bulk wave functions that possess nontrivial topological invariants. While edge modes are widely presented as signatures of nontrivial topology, how bulk wave functions can manifest explicitly topological properties remains unresolved. Here, using high-resolution inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (IXS) combined with first principles calculations, we report experimental signatures of chiral wave functions in the bulk phonon spectrum of BaPtGe, which we show to host a previously undiscovered twofold-degenerate quadruple Weyl node. The chirality of the degenerate phononic wave function yields a nontrivial phonon dynamical structure factor, S(Q,ω), along high-symmetry directions, that is in excellent agreement with numerical and model calculations. Furthermore, our results establish IXS as a powerful tool to uncover topological wave functions, providing a key missing ingredient in the study of topological quantum matter.

Canted antiferromagnetic order and spin dynamics in the honeycomb-lattice compound Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

Here, single-crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, bulk magnetization measurements, and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 . While the R ln 2 magnetic contribution to the low-temperature entropy indicates a J eff = 1 / 2 moment for the lowest-energy crystal-field doublet, the Tb 3 + ions form a canted antiferromagnetic structure below 12.5 K. Due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Tb moments in the a b plane are slightly canted towards b with a canted moment of 1.22 μ B per formula unit. A minimal x x z spin Hamiltonian is used to simultaneously fit the spin-wave frequencies along the high-symmetry directions and the field dependence of the magnetization along the three crystallographic axes. Long-range magnetic interactions for both in-plane and out-of-plane couplings up to the second nearest neighbors are needed to account for the observed static and dynamic properties. The z component of the exchange interactions between Tb moments is larger than the x and y components. This compound also exhibits bond-dependent exchange with negligible nearest-neighbor exchange coupling between moments parallel and perpendicular to the 4 f orbitals. Despite the J eff = 1 / 2 moments, the spin Hamiltonian is denominated by a large in-plane anisotropy K z ~ – 1 meV . DFT calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and the substantial interplane coupling at larger Tb-Tb distances.

Built-in electric field control of magnetic coupling in van der Waals semiconductors

Electrical control of magnetism in a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor is of great interest for emerging nanoscale low-dissipation spintronic devices. Here, we propose a general approach of tuning magnetic coupling and anisotropy of a van der Waals (vdW) 2D magnetic semiconductor via a built-in electric field generated by the adsorption of superatomic ions. Using first-principles calculations, we predict a significant enhancement of ferromagnetic coupling and a great change of magnetic anisotropy in 2D semiconductors when they are sandwiched between superatomic cations and anions. The magnetic coupling is directly affected by the built-in electric field, which lifts the energy levels of mediated ligands' orbitals and enhances the superexchange interactions. Finally, these findings will be of interest for ionic gating controlled ferromagnets and magnetoelectronics based on vdW 2D semiconductors.

Defect-engineered room-temperature ferromagnetism in quasi-two-dimensional nitrided CoTa 2 O 6

Thermal ammonolysis of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) CoTa 2 O 6 yields the O 2– /N 3– and anionic vacancy-ordered Co 2+ $Ta^{5+}_{2}$O 6–x N 2x/3 $\square$ x/3 (x $\leqslant$ 0.15), which exhibits a transition from antiferromagnetism to defect-engineered above-room-temperature ferromagnetism. First-principles calculations reveal that the origin of ferromagnetism is a particular CoO 5 N configuration with N located at Wyckoff position 8j, which breaks mirror symmetry about the ab plane. A pressure-induced electronic phase transition is also predicted at ~24.5 GPa, accompanied by insulator-to-metal transition and magnetic moment vanishing.

First-principles studies of the unconventional spin-phonon coupling mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

Here, we perform systematic first-principles calculations to investigate the spin-phonon coupling (SPC) mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 which has the peculiar all-in-all-out noncollinear magnetic ground state. A large SPC coefficient up to 34 cm –1 is found, showing the potential of using this material in thermal spin devices. We further split the SPC coefficients to contributions from symmetric exchange interaction, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the single ion anisotropy. Unlike what was assumed in previous studies, the DMI contributions are rather important for most modes. These results provide insights for the understanding of the SPC in 5d transition metal oxides and useful guidance for the search of excellent spin caloritronic materials.
