In-plane quasi-single-domain BaTiO 3 via interfacial symmetry engineering

The control of the in-plane domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films is not only critical to understanding ferroelectric phenomena but also to enabling functional device fabrication. However, in-plane polarized ferroelectric thin films typically exhibit complicated multi-domain states, not desirable for optoelectronic device performance. Here we report a strategy combining interfacial symmetry engineering and anisotropic strain to design single-domain, in-plane polarized ferroelectric BaTiO 3 thin films. Theoretical calculations predict the key role of the BaTiO 3 /PrScO 3 (110) O substrate interfacial environment, where anisotropic strain, monoclinic distortions, and interfacial electrostatic potential stabilize a single-variant spontaneous polarization. A combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements, and second harmonic generation measurements directly reveals the stabilization of the in-plane quasi-single-domain polarization state. This work offers design principles for engineering in-plane domains of ferroelectric oxide thin films, which is a prerequisite for high performance optoelectronic devices.

Substitution of Pb with (Li 1/2 Bi 1/2 ) in PbZrO 3 -based antiferroelectric ceramics

PbZrO 3 -based antiferroelectric (AFE) ceramics are promising dielectrics for high-energy-density capacitors due to their reversible phase transitions during charge–discharge cycles. In this work, a new composition series, [Pb 0.93–x La 0.02 (Li 1/2 Bi 1/2 ) x Sr 0.04 ][Zr 0.57 Sn 0.34 Ti 0.09 ]O 3 , with Li + and Bi 3+ substitution of Pb 2+ at x=0 , 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16 is investigated for the microstructure evolution, ferroelectric (FE) and dielectric properties. It is found that Li + and Bi 3+ substitution can significantly reduce the sintering temperature and simultaneously enhance the dielectric breakdown strength. An ultrahigh energy efficiency (94.0%) and a large energy density (3.22J/cm 3 ) are achieved in the composition of x = 0.12 with a low sintering temperature (1075°C).

Terahertz-field activation of polar skyrons

Unraveling collective modes arising from coupled degrees of freedom is crucial for understanding complex interactions in solids and developing new functionalities. Unique collective behaviors emerge when two degrees of freedom, ordered on distinct length scales, interact. Polar skyrmions, three-dimensional electric polarization textures in ferroelectric superlattices, disrupt the lattice continuity at the nanometer scale with nontrivial topology, leading to previously unexplored collective modes. Here, using terahertz-field excitation and femtosecond x-ray diffraction, we discover subterahertz collective modes, dubbed “skyrons”, which appear as swirling patterns of atomic displacements functioning as atomic-scale gearsets. The key to activating skyrons is the use of the THz field that couples primarily to skyrmion domain walls. Momentum-resolved time-domain measurements of diffuse scattering reveal an avoided crossing in the dispersion relation of skyrons. Atomistic simulations and dynamical phase-field modeling provide microscopic insights into the three-dimensional crystallographic and polarization dynamics. The amplitude and dispersion of skyrons are demonstrated to be controlled by sample temperature and electric-field bias. The discovery of skyrons and their coupling with terahertz fields opens avenues for ultrafast control of topological polar structures.

Electric field driven domain wall dynamics in BaTiO 3 nanoparticles

We report a detailed investigation into the response of single BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanocrystals under applied electric fields (E-field) using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging. Our study reveals pronounced domain wall migration and expansion of a sample measure under applied electric field. The changes are most prominent at the surface of the nanocrystal, where the lack of external strain allows greater domain wall mobility. The observed domain shifts are correlated to the strength and orientation of the applied E-field, following a side-by-side domain model from Suzana []. Notably, we identified a critical electric field strength of 3 MV/m, which leads to irreversible structural changes, suggesting plastic deformation. The findings highlight how surface effects and intrinsic defects contribute to the enhanced dielectric properties of BTO at the nanoscale, in contrast to bulk materials, where strain limits domain mobility. These findings deepen our understanding of nanoscale dielectric behavior and inform the design of advanced nanoelectronic devices. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Low-temperature processed beta-phase In 2 Se 3 ferroelectric semiconductor thin film transistors

As scaling becomes increasingly difficult, there is growing interest in vertical or three-dimensional stacking of transistors and especially memory. Ferroelectric semiconductor field effect transistors can be key enablers to improve energy efficiency and overall chip and memory performance. In this work, low-temperature processed, back-end-of-the-line compatible transistors were demonstrated by depositing a layered chalcogenide ferroelectric semiconductor, beta-phase In 2 Se 3 , at temperature as low as 400 °C. Top gate n-channel In 2 Se 3 thin film transistors were fabricated with field-effect mobility ∼1 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , and simple polarization switching based memory results are presented.

Pressure-dependent phase transitions in hybrid improper ferroelectric Ruddlesden-Popper oxides

The temperature-dependent phase transitions in Ruddlesden-Popper oxides with perovskite bilayers have been under increased scrutiny in recent years due to the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity that some chemical compositions exhibit. However, little is currently understood about the hydrostatic pressure dependence of these phase transitions. Herein we present the results of a combined high-pressure powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiment and a b i n i t i o study on the bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper phases Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 and Ca 3 Ti 2 O 7 . In both compounds we observe a first-order phase transition, that in combination with our density functional theory calculations, we can confidently assign as being between polar A 2 1 a m and nonpolar A c a a structures. Interestingly, we show that while the application of pressure ultimately favors a nonpolar phase, as is commonly observed for proper ferroelectrics, regions of response exist where pressure actually acts to increase the polar mode amplitudes. The reason for this can be untangled by considering the varied response of octahedral tilts and rotations to hydrostatic pressure and their trilinear coupling with the polar instability. Design of 3D Oxide–Metal Hybrid Metamaterial for Tailorable Light–Matter Interactions in Visible and Near-Infrared Region

Dielectric–metallic hybrid metamaterials exhibit extraordinary optical properties due to the light–matter interactions at the dielectric–metallic interfaces. The ability in precision control of the light–matter interactions in nanoscale is key to tailor the optical properties of hybrid metamaterials. In this work, a complex 3D framework of multilayered self-assembled BaTiO 3 (BTO)-Au hybrid thin films is demonstrated with such precision control of the light–matter interaction in nanoscale. Here, unique “bamboo-like” Au nanostructures are formed via the bilayer and trilayer stacking of BTO-Au hybrid layers with interlayers of SrTiO 3 , CeO 2 , or MgO. Different film strain states introduced by the three interlayers result in variable diameter and density of Au nanopillars. Both simulated and experimental optical data demonstrate the localized surface plasmon resonance change and hyperbolic dispersion wavelength shift in visible to near-infrared because of the effective tuning of the Au nanopillar aspect ratio and free electron density. The highly tunable optical properties along with the ferroelectric behavior and thermal robustness of the 3D hybrid film enable it to be a great candidate for multifunctional applications. This study demonstrates a unique 3D approach for precision optical property tuning and combined functionalities in oxide–metal metamaterial systems toward future integrated photonic and electronic devices.

Large Area Transfer of Bismuth‐Based Layered Oxide Thin Films Using a Flexible Polymer Transfer Method

Magnetic and ferroelectric oxide thin films have long been studied for their applications in electronics, optics, and sensors. The properties of these oxide thin films are highly dependent on the film growth quality and conditions. To maximize the film quality, epitaxial oxide thin films are frequently grown on single-crystal oxide substrates such as strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 ) and lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO 3 ) to satisfy lattice matching and minimize defect formation. However, these single-crystal oxide substrates cannot readily be used in practical applications due to their high cost, limited availability, and small wafer sizes. One leading solution to this challenge is film transfer. In this demonstration, a material from a new class of multiferroic oxides is selected, namely bismuth-based layered oxides, for the transfer. A water-soluble sacrificial layer of Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 is inserted between the oxide substrate and the film, enabling the release of the film from the original substrate onto a polymer support layer. The films are transferred onto new substrates of silicon and lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) and the polymer layer is removed. These substrates allow for the future design of electronic and optical devices as well as sensors using this new group of multiferroic layered oxide films.

63,65 Cu NMR study of the magnetically ordered state of the multiferroic CuFeO 2

In this work, field-swept 63,65 Cu NMR spectra under magnetic fields up to 8.3 T at a constant NMR frequency and temperatures T < 12 K on a single crystalline sample of multiferroic CuFeO 2 were measured and analyzed. When the magnetic field is applied along the c axis, a nearly zero internal magnetic field at the Cu site in magnetic ordered state was observed. This is explained by the perfect cancellation of the internal fields produced by the 6 nearest neighbor Fe 3+ ( S = 5/2) ions, revealing the magnetic structure to be a collinear four-sublattice structure. On the other hand, when the magnetic field is applied along the ab plane, we observed a finite internal field at the Cu sites, which is due to the canting of the Fe moments. Strong change in the NMR signal intensity is observed around 7–8 T, corresponding to the magnetic phase transition from the collinear magnetic to ferroelectric incommensurate states. The ratio of the two magnetic phases significantly depends on the history of the change in the external magnetic field and the temperature of the sample. The details of history dependence of the ratio were discussed.

Stabilization of ferroelectric phase of Hf 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 on NbN and Nb [slides]

This work demonstrated both NbN and Nb make good electrodes for stabilizing orthorhombic phase of Hf 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 ferroelectric films. Wake up are < 100 cycles. P r can be as high as 30 µC/cm 2 - respectively 14 and 18 µC/cm 2 here. Further, capacitance suggests an orthorhombic phase can be stabilized. Addition of a linear dielectric under modest thickness can tune the P r and reduce leakage.

Ultrafast Optically Induced Perturbation of Oxygen Octahedral Rotations in Multiferroic BiFeO 3 Thin Films

The functional properties of complex oxides, including magnetism and ferroelectricity, are closely linked to subtle structural distortions. Ultrafast optical excitations provide the means to manipulate structural features and ultimately to affect the functional properties of complex oxides with picosecond-scale precision. Here, we report that the lattice expansion of multiferroic BiFeO 3 following above-bandgap optical excitation leads to distortion of the oxygen octahedral rotation (OOR) pattern. The continuous coupling between OOR and strain was probed using time-resolved X-ray free-electron laser diffraction with femtosecond time resolution. Density functional theory calculations predict a relationship between the OOR and the elastic strain consistent with the experiment, demonstrating a route to employing this approach in a wider range of systems. Ultrafast control of the functional properties of BiFeO 3 thin films is enabled by this approach because the OOR phenomena are related to ferroelectricity, and via the Fe-O-Fe bond angles, the superexchange interaction between Fe atoms.

Nonvolatile Memristive Effect in Few-Layer CrI 3 Driven by Electrostatic Gating

The potential of memristive devices for applications in nonvolatile memory and neuromorphic computing has sparked considerable interest, particularly in exploring memristive effects in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials. However, the progress in developing nonvolatile, magnetic field-free memristive devices using 2D magnets has been limited. In this work, we report an electrostatic-gating-induced nonvolatile memristive effect in CrI 3 -based tunnel junctions. The few-layer CrI 3 -based tunnel junction manifests notable hysteresis in its tunneling resistance as a function of gate voltage. We further engineered a nonvolatile memristor using the CrI 3 tunneling junction with low writing power and at zero magnetic field. We show that the hysteretic transport observed is not a result of trivial effects or inherent magnetic properties of CrI 3 . We propose a potential association between the memristive effect and the newly predicted ferroelectricity in CrI 3 via gating-induced Jahn–Teller distortion. Furthermore, our work illuminates the potential of 2D magnets in developing next-generation advanced computing technologies.

Tunable phase structure in NaNbO 3 ceramics by grain-size effect, electric field and heat treatment

Large polarization and strain change during antiferroelectric - ferroelectric phase transition under electric field is the foundation for realizing excellent electrical properties in antiferroelectric ceramics, therefore, the adjustment of antiferroelectricity and clarification of the corresponding mechanism is the foundation for controlling electrical properties. NaNbO3 is the most complex perovskite system showing multiple antiferroelectric phases in a wide temperature range, in which the antiferroelectricity shows obvious instability with changing external and internal conditions, namely the antiferroelectric phase can be adjusted by grain-size effect, electric field and heat treatment. According to the systematical study in terms of the Rietveld refinement of synchrotron XRD and Raman, NaNbO3 exhibits a ferrielectric P21ma structure at room temperature, the ferroelectric component of which increases with decreasing grain size. Two antiferroelectric tetragonal phases exist around Curie temperature TC before the entrance of antiferroelectric R phase zone, while an antiferroelectric monoclinic phase, which can be maintained to room temperature by annealing treatment, acts as the bridge for the depolarization of the poled NaNbO3 with ferroelectric Q phase. A detailed phase diagram mainly focused on the antiferroelectric phase zones of NaNbO3 is plotted, which gives a clear understanding about the polymorphic phase transitions under different conditions. Finally, the results concluded in this work would give a clear guidance for designing high-performance NaNbO3-based lead-free ceramics from the point of structure.

Large spin splittings due to the orbital degree of freedom and spin textures in a ferroelectric nitride perovskite

First-principles simulations are conducted to predict that ferroelectric nitride perovskite LaWN 3 not only exhibits large spin splittings (2.7 eV Å) but also possesses unique spin textures for some of its conduction levels. Such spin splittings around the Γ and L points cannot be interpreted as a typical mixture of Rashba or Dresselhaus configurations but rather require the development of four-band $\textit{k ∙ p}$ models with high-order terms. We further identify that, for some bands, spin splittings can be greatly contributed by the pure orbital degree of freedom (PODF), a unique character of our four-band Hamiltonian compared to the traditional two-band version. The concept of PODF-enhanced spin splittings paves a way for designing materials with large spin splittings. Moreover, the energy levels possessing such large splittings and complex spin textures can be brought close to the conduction-band minimum by applying epitaxial strain.

Automated piezoresponse force microscopy domain tracking during fast thermally stimulated phase transition in CuInP 2 S 6

Real-time tracking of dynamic nanoscale processes such as phase transitions by scanning probe microscopy is a challenging task, typically requiring extensive and laborious human supervision. Smart strategies to track specific regions of interest (ROI) in the system during such transformations in a fast and automated manner are necessary to study the evolution of the microscopic changes in such dynamic systems. In this work, we realize automated ROI tracking in piezoresponse force microscopy during a fast (≈0.8 °C s –1 ) thermally stimulated ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition in CuInP 2 S 6 . We use a combination of fast (1 frame per second) sparse scanning with compressed sensing image reconstruction and real-time offset correction via phase cross correlation. The applied methodology enables in situ fast and automated functional nanoscale characterization of a certain ROI during external stimulation that generates sample drift and changes local functionality.

Superconductivity in dilute SrTiO 3 : A review

Doped SrTiO 3 , one of the most dilute bulk systems to display superconductivity, is perhaps the first example of an unconventional superconductor, as it does not fit into the standard BCS paradigm. More than five decades of research has revealed a rich temperature-carrier concentration phase diagram that showcases a superconducting dome, proximity to a putative quantum critical point, Lifshitz transitions, a multi-gap pairing state and unusual normal-state transport properties. Research has also extended beyond bulk SrTiO 3 , ushering the new field of SrTiO 3 -based heterostructures. Because many of these themes are also featured in other quantum materials of contemporary interest, recent years have seen renewed interest in SrTiO 3 . Here, we review the challenges and recent progress in elucidating the superconducting state of this model system. At the same time that its extreme dilution requires to revisit several of the approximations that constitute the successful Migdal–Eliashberg description of electron–phonon superconductivity, including the suppression of the Coulomb repulsion via the Tolmachev–Anderson–Morel mechanism, it opens interesting routes for alternative pairing mechanisms whose applicability remains under debate. For instance, pairing mechanisms involving longitudinal optical phonons have to overcome the hurdles created by the anti-adiabatic nature of the pairing interaction, whereas mechanisms that rely on the soft transverse optical phonons associated with incipient ferroelectricity face challenges related to the nature of the electron–phonon coupling. Proposals in which pairing is mediated by plasmons or promoted locally by defects are also discussed. In conclusion, we finish by surveying the existing evidence for multi-band superconductivity and outlining promising directions that can potentially shed new light on the rich problem of superconductivity in SrTiO 3 .

Room temperature multiferroicity and magnetodielectric coupling in 0–3 composite thin films

Magnetoelectric (ME) composite thin films are promising candidates for novel applications in future nanoelectronics, spintronics, memory and other multifunctional devices as they exhibit much higher ME coupling and transition temperatures (Tc) than well-known single phase multiferroics discovered to date. Among the three types of multiferroic composite nanostructures, (2-2) layered and (1-3) vertically aligned composite nanostructures exhibit comparatively smaller ME coupling due to different shortcomings which restrict their use in many applications. Here we study the morphological, piezoresponse force microscopic (PFM), ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetodielectric properties of 0-3 (magnetic nanoparticles (0) homogeneously distributed in ferroelectric matrices (3)) multiferroic composite thin films. The Pb(Fe 0.5 Nb 0.5 )O 3 (PFN) - Ni 0.65 Zn 0.35 Fe 2 O 4 (NZFO) particulate composite films were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). These particulate composite thin films are completely c-axis oriented with very low surface roughness. We observed magnetic and ferroelectric T c above room temperature (RT) for all composite thin films. The PFN-NZFO 0-3 composites exhibit large polarization, high saturated magnetization with low coercive field, low dielectric loss along with magnetodielectric coupling at RT. These nanocomposites might be utilized in next generation nano/microelectronics and spintronic devices.
