Evaluation of Spray and Combustion Models for Simulating Dilute Combustion in a Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine

Dilute combustion in spark-ignition engines has the potential to improve thermal efficiency by mitigating knock and by reducing throttling and wall heat losses. However, ignition and combustion processes can become unstable for dilute operation due to a lowered laminar flame speed, resulting in excessive cycle-to-cycle variability (CCV) of the combustion process. To compensate for the slower combustion in less reactive mixtures, a modified intake port geometry can be employed to generate a strong tumble flow in the cylinder and elevate turbulence levels around the spark plug, thereby promoting a faster transition to turbulent deflagration. Consequently, optimizing combustion chamber geometry and operating strategy is crucial to maximizing the benefits of using dilute combustion with enhanced in-cylinder turbulence across a wide range of operating conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can be utilized for virtual engine optimization tasks, but this would require the models to be truly predictive regarding the impact of changes to the engine design and operational parameters. In this study, multicycle large-eddy simulations (LES) are performed for a direct-injection spark-ignition engine to investigate the model performance in predicting engine combustion characteristics with respect to changes in the intake configuration. A tumble plate that blocks the lower part of the intake port inlet is used to vary the tumble. A set of CFD models that have been recently developed are employed, which takes into account the drag of nonspherical droplets, flash-boiling behavior of liquid sprays, spray-wall interaction, surrogate formulation of a research-grade E10 gasoline, and fast chemical kinetic solvers. Simulation results are compared to experimental engine data in terms of cylinder pressure, apparent heat release rate, mass fraction burned timing, and flame images. It is found that LES employing the state-of-the-art CFD models are capable of properly predicting the spray processes and reproducing the measured mean cylinder pressure for the case with the tumble plate. On the other hand, the LES over-predicts the combustion rate during the early combustion stage and under-estimates the CCV, and these discrepancies become larger when the tumble plate is removed.

Fundamental Understanding of Cu-zeolite SCR Catalyst Aging Mechanism (CRADA 452)

The CRADA between Cummins and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will focus on advanced emission control for high-efficiency engines. It will specifically focus on the following three areas: 1. Passive NOx absorbers - The purpose is to develop next generation materials that can be efficiently used to address the cold-operation, as driven by improved engine efficiency. 2. Oxidation of methane and short alkanes – The purpose is to address cold-operation emissions arising from CNG vehicles. 3. Improved understanding of particulates–the purpose is to understand how particulates are formed which will be used to develop strategies to address the tightening regulations and their enforcement for exhaust particulate matter. The first two areas will be based on PNNL’s technical leadership in the area of zeolite-based materials. The third area will have a shorter time scope to leverage the unique SPLAT capabilities at PNNL to help address Cummins’ needs in improving the understanding of particulates.

Hybrid Electric Drivetrain Testing and Design (CRADA CRD-17-00699 Final Report)

Hybrid electric drivetrains have recently become of a great interest in the medium and heavy-duty vehicle market as it enables substantial reduction of petroleum use, vehicle level fuel use and criteria pollutant emissions. These vehicle performance improvements are not only economically beneficial for business operations relying on large fleets of vehicles, they are also paramount for curbing energy use and the negative effects of vehicle operations on the environment. Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), acquired in July 2018 by Cummins, Inc., is a small company focused on development of medium and heavy-duty hybrid electric drivetrains. EDI has already developed the general hardware architecture of their drivetrain system, but there is still a significant effort to be done on optimizing the system in terms of control strategies and component sizing in order to maximize the benefits of the hybrid drivetrain. Historically, hybrid electric systems have proven to deliver better fuel economy in certain applications than their conventional counterparts. Particular areas of advantageous applications are vocations with kinetically intensive transient duty cycles and operations requiring some sort of power take off whose power demand is not well matched to the size of the vehicle’s main engine, thus forcing it to operate in extremely inefficient operating modes. Hybrid drivetrains can be at a disadvantage when pressed into duty cycle operation consisting of extensive steady state highway cruise due to various design compromises optimized for more transient operation. This can also lead to increase in vehicle emissions if the system is not optimized properly. Ample opportunity for extensive optimization is needed to overcome these obstacles.

Rheology and engine performance of very low sulfur fuel oil blended with 10% fast pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction oils in a 2-stroke crosshead engine

The performance and emissions for a downscaled single-cylinder 2-stroke crosshead engine were determined for a very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) when blended with 10 wt.% fast pyrolysis (FP) or hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) bio-intermediates. The FP and HTL oils were derived from biomass and were observed to contain lower molecular weight (MW) hydrocarbons than neat VLSFO (which was evaluated as a baseline comparison). The addition of either biofuel reduced the overall viscosity of the VLSFO. Aging tests at 50, 90, and 120°C showed that the dynamic viscosity of VLSFO increased with exposure time up to two weeks. Similar trends were observed for the FP and HTL blends, but a pronounced spike in viscosity occurred for these fuels during the early period of exposure. None of the viscosity increases exceeded the operational limits of fuel system pumps. Engine performance studies were conducted under low, medium and high load operational settings. The relative performance of the test fuels was highly dependent on operating condition. In general, the engine results for the three test fuels were similar, but modest improvements in brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption were observed, which may be attributed to the heightened reactivity of low molecular weight fraction of the FP and HTL oils.
