Probabilistic Day-Ahead Forecasting Using an Analog Ensemble Approach for Wind Farm Grid Services

Wind resource assessment and wind power forecasting are used in research and industry to anticipate future power output at scales ranging from individual wind turbines to entire wind farms. Probabilistic day-ahead wind forecasting is useful for anticipating how a wind farm could potentially participate in the day-ahead market by providing upper and lower bounds for expected power generation, thus informing grid operators of its uncertainty. Understanding this uncertainty is part of a larger project focused on building a platform that combines efforts in weather forecasting, aerodynamic and economic modeling to create maximum value of a wind plant to better provide services to the grid. This effort is also known as the Atmosphere to Electrons to Grid (A2E2G) project. One method for producing a probabilistic forecast is through the analog ensemble approach (Delle Monache et al., 2011). This method leverages historical forecasts and their corresponding observations as a training data set from which future forecasts can be made. For some future forecast, the most similar historical forecasts (analogs) are identified on a regular time basis such as once per a 3-hour window. The most similar analogs, based on a metric such as root mean square error (RMSE), are recorded and their corresponding verifying observations are used as an ensemble member for this future forecast. Prior work in this area demonstrates improvements over raw Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) forecasts and shows skill similar to techniques such as logistic regression and machine learning (Delle Monache et al., 2013; Alessandrini et al., 2015). Here, we take the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model (HRRR) day-ahead forecast (0-36 hours) to create a probabilistic day-ahead forecast using an analog ensemble approach. The HRRR has an hourly temporal resolution, with a spatial resolution of 3 km. The 12 UTC HRRR model run is downloaded every day for one year from August 2019 - July 2020, with the first 11 months serving as a bank of analogs from which the forecasting algorithm can create a probabilistic forecast. Once downloaded, the original HRRR forecast is temporally interpolated to 5-minutes, aligning with both the temporal resolution of the observations as well as the timescale relevant for day-ahead power forecasts. The forecast is validated at the M2 tower at the Flatirons Campus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) at a typical wind turbine height of 80 m. Variables such as wind speed, wind direction, and turbulence intensity are incorporated into the probabilistic forecast model and weighted according to their relative importance to the forecast. Based on metrics such as mean bias error (MBE), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error, the analog ensemble forecast outperforms the raw HRRR forecast during the testing period of July 2020. Figure 1 illustrates an example day-ahead forecast compared against the verifying observations. The general variability and ramps are captured throughout the day, with potential to further improve the analog ensemble model through machine learning techniques.

Distributed directory of named data elements in coordination namespace

An approach is described that provides a distributed directory structure within a storage of an information handling system (a local node). A request is received with the request corresponding to a shared virtual address. The shared virtual address that is shared amongst a number of nodes that includes the local node and some remote nodes. A Global Address Space Directory (GASD) is retrieved that corresponds to a global virtual address space. The GASD is stored in a Coordination Namespace that is stored in a memory that is distributed amongst the nodes. A mapping that is included in the GASD is used to determine the node where the shared virtual address currently resides. The shared virtual address is then accessed from the node where it currently resides.

Prioritizing Countries by Concern Regarding Access to Weapons of Mass Destruction Materials

This article presents a global prioritization methodology that evaluates the relative risks of non-state actor acquisition of materials that could be used in chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high explosive Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) from the country’s relevant infrastructure. Prioritization is based on three domains: 1. Assessing relative scale of materials in each country, 2. The country’s corresponding security posture, and 3. The presence of threat actors. The output is a list of countries prioritized from greatest risk to least. Rather than providing an overall 1 to N ranking, however, the results are placed into tiers based upon their natural groupings within the three domains. The countries in the highest tiers are flagged as potential US national security concern; those scoring in the middle and at the bottom are flagged as posing lower US national security concern. A systematic approach assesses each country by leveraging many disciplines, such as risk and decision analysis, as well as expert judgement. A quantitative value model based on Multi-Attribute Value Theory (MAVT) organizes the objectives scoring criteria into a value tree using lessons learned from previous studies, published literature, and expert judgement. The article presents the prioritization categories and corresponding value model scoring criteria to include measurement type, weight, range, and value preference. Country names and data are notional in order to share the details on the underlying methodology and model without identification of actual security risks. A deliberative process addresses factors external to the model and scrutinizes inputs, methodology, model, and results.

M3 milestone: Advanced contact 2021

This report describes advanced contact approaches and implementations in FY21 for use in emerging reactors with geometries that differ from LWR/EBR-II cylindrical fuel. Contact remains a challenging and crucially important component of our modeling toolkit. While significant improvements have been made through mortar and automatic differentiation, we explored advanced approaches (i.e., dual mortar) that yields better conditioned systems and will improve the robustness and performance of BISON contact problems. This effort is relevant to emerging reactor types, such as micro reactors and the corresponding complex and numerous contact surfaces. In this report, improvements of the mortar-based contact formulation are described. Benchmark problems and BISON assessment cases are included to demonstrate the improvements and advantages that are brought by the recent capability. Remaining issues are discussed and corresponding development plans are outlined.

Scatter gather using key-value store

Scatter gather operation(s) are performed by accessing a shared memory that is shared amongst nodes interconnected through network(s) and having a CNS shared amongst the nodes. Data is gathered from multiple processes at corresponding multiple nodes into location(s) in the CNS, and tuple(s) having a same tuple name are created in the CNS. The tuple(s) have information referencing the gathered data in the location(s). Alternatively, data that has been gathered using the same tuple name is scattered to multiple processes participating in the CNS. The scattering uses the tuple(s) in the CNS, and is performed from the location(s) into other location(s) at one or multiple nodes for one or multiple processes at the corresponding one or multiple nodes. Both the gathering data and the scattering data may also be performed.

Map reduce using coordination namespace hardware acceleration

A system and method for supporting data MapReduce operations in a tuple space/coordinated namespace (CNS) extended memory storage architecture. The system-wide CNS provides an efficient means for storing and communicating data generated by local processes running at the nodes, and coordinated to provide MapReduce operations in a multi-nodal system. A hardware accelerated mechanism supports map reduce sorting/shuffle operations and reduce operations according to an aggregate function. Local processes running at a node generate a tuple corresponding to data generated by a process, each tuple having a tuple name and tuple data value corresponding to the generated data. Each tuple is processed and stored at the node or another node, dependent upon its tuple name. Tuple records associated with a tuple name are accumulated at one or more nodes according to a linked list structure at each that is accessible via a hash table index pointer at the node.

Securing against malicious control of circuit breakers in electrical substations

An example method for detecting and mitigating attacks on electric power substations comprises detecting a command to open or close a circuit breaker in the electric power substation. A modified extended substation model for the electric power substation is generated, based on the detected command and based on measurements in substation, where the modified extended substation model is a power flow model for the substation and for one or more directly connected neighboring substations. A power flow analysis is performed, using the modified extended substation model, to generate a predicted voltage for each of a plurality of nodes in the substation and in the one or more directly connected neighboring substations. Each predicted voltage is compared to a corresponding allowable voltage range, and execution of the command is blocked in response to determining that one or more of the voltages is outside the corresponding allowable voltage range.

Detection of an internal short circuit in a battery

An electrical device comprises a battery cell; a pressure sensor for measuring swelling forces of the battery cell, optionally with voltage, temperature and current sensors, and a battery management system including a controller. The controller executes a program to: (i) determine a reference swelling force corresponding to a reference electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at an earlier reference time, (ii) determine a second swelling force corresponding to a second electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at a later second time, and (iii) determine whether a risk of internal short circuit of the battery cell exists by comparing a reference level of the reference electrical signal and a signal representative of the second electrical signal. When the signal representative of the second electrical signal exceeds the reference level of the reference electrical signal by a threshold amount, a risk of internal short circuit of the cell exists.

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING OF REFRACTORY ALLOYS

Refractory alloys are known for their high temperature capabilities and are intended for use at ultra-high temperatures above even 1200°C, which exceeds the capabilities of conventional superalloys. Additive manufacturing (AM) is an attractive alternative processing route because refractory alloys are difficult to fabricate through traditional methods; AM can form a near net-shape part with a tailored microstructure. This work seeks to evaluate the solidification behavior of refractory alloys under AM conditions and establish corresponding solidification models. Two binary alloys, Mo30Nb and Nb7.5Ta, as well as the commercial Nb alloy, C103, and one refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA), MoNbTaTi, were subjected to single track melts in a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) machine. Each melt track was evaluated in the scanning electron microscope (SEM), which determined that some AM conditions used led to non-ideal behavior. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) revealed that the Nb7.5Ta, C103, and MoNbTaTi all exhibited new grain nucleation to various extents while the Mo30Nb exhibited primarily epitaxial growth. This was found to be inconsistent with solidification models that were developed for each alloy and each set of AM conditions to predict the columnar to equiaxed transition behavior (CET) of the experimental microstructures. This disparity was largely attributed to the input parameters for the solidification model, which were developed using Thermo-Calc and SYSWELD. These input parameters include the alloy specific Gibbs-Thomson coefficient and thermophysical properties, the solute specific liquidus slopes and partitioning coefficients, as well as the process specific thermal gradients. Each input parameter was evaluated to determine the likely changes required for the modeled values to generate solidification models that better correspond to what was observed experimentally.

Radial Compressors with Advanced Secondary Flow Paths for Extended Operating Range

Adequate range is a critical criterion in determining the proper compressor for a given application. In industries centering on turbochargers, range is often the dominant concern. Many times, significant sacrifices in performance are made at the design point in order to obtain enough range of the machine for the duty required. Active controls, the most common being inlet guide vanes (IGVs), can provide sufficient range extension while generating minimal degradation of performance at the design point. Such devices, however, add significant cost and complexity to the machine as they require an active control mechanism. Other devices, such as recirculating casing treatment (RCT), have the advantage of both cost and simplicity by virtue of their passive nature. They’ve seen widespread adoption in the turbocharger industry, though they are generally less effective than IGVs in extending range. A novel approach to extend compressor range through a passive method is proposed here. The method takes some inspiration from classical RCT applications in that it prompts recirculation at low flow rates and corresponding higher back pressures. This recirculation then occupies a portion of the primary cross-sectional passage area and confines the rest of the non-recirculating flow to a smaller area. This restriction forces a higher meridional velocity and a more favorable incidence angle at the impeller blade leading edge. The recirculation is accomplished by laying out an expanded secondary flow path at the rear of the impeller leading back to the inlet hub region. Vanes on the rear of the impeller disk provide just enough pressure rise to counter the induced pressure from the primary flow at the design point. This yields very low mass flow in the secondary path, a condition known as “shutoff” in the pump industry. At lower primary flow levels, and higher back pressures, the secondary flow is induced back to the impeller inlet setting up the recirculation region and pinching the primary flow. Various vane configurations and layouts in the secondary region are explained, and advantages and disadvantages of each are covered. The range extensions made possible by this method and the corresponding impact on performance is discussed.
