Higher-Order Corrections to Optimisers based on Newton's Method

The Newton, Gauss–Newton and Levenberg–Marquardt methods all use the first derivative of a vector function (the Jacobian) to minimise its sum of squares. When the Jacobian matrix is ill-conditioned, the function varies much faster in some directions than others and the space of possible improvement in sum of squares becomes a long narrow ellipsoid in the linear model. This means that even a small amount of nonlinearity in the problem parameters can cause a proposed point far down the long axis of the ellipsoid to fall outside of the actual curved valley of improved values, even though it is quite nearby. This paper presents a differential equation that ‘follows’ these valleys, based on the technique of geodesic acceleration, which itself provides a 2 nd order improvement to the Levenberg–Marquardt iteration step. Higher derivatives of this equation are computed that allow n th order improvements to the optimisation methods to be derived. These higher-order accelerated methods up to 4 th order are tested numerically and shown to provide substantial reduction of both number of steps and computation time.

Scheme for quantitative description of longitudinal drifts in the Fermilab Linac and their correction

The Fermilab Linac accepts the 0.75 MeV H- ions from the front end and accelerates them to 400 MeV for injection into the Booster. Day-to-day drifts of the longitudinal trajectory in the Linac, reconstructed from phase readings of Beam Position Monitors, are at the level of several degrees. They are believed to cause additional losses both in the Linac and Booster, and are addressed by empirically adjusting the phases of Linac cavities. This work explores the option of expressing these drifts in terms of phase shifts in two cavities at the low-energy part of the Linac. Such a description allows for a simplified visual representation of the drifts, suggests a clear algorithm for their compensation, and provides a tool for estimating efficiency of such compensation.

Doppler Lidar Motion-Correction Wind Profiles (DLMCPROF-WIND) Value-Added Product Report

Wind speed and direction, together with pressure, temperature, and relative humidity, are the most fundamental atmospheric state parameters. Accurate measurement of these parameters is crucial for numerical weather prediction. Vertically resolved wind measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer are particularly important for modeling pollutant and aerosol transport. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility currently operates several scanning coherent Doppler lidar (DL) systems that provide accurate height-resolved measurements of wind speed and direction. These instruments operate in the near infrared (IR;1.5 microns) and provide range-resolved measurements of radial velocity, attenuated aerosol backscatter, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The systems are operated using a fixed scan schedule consisting of plan position indicator (PPI) or Doppler Beam-Swing (DBS) scans. PPI scans are performed by scanning the beam in azimuth while maintaining a fixed elevation angle, and DBS scans are similar but typically also include a vertical beam. Radial velocity data from these scans are processed to yield profiles of wind speed direction. For stationary ground-based deployments, the Doppler Lidar Horizontal Wind Profiles (DLPROF-WIND) Value-Added-Product (VAP) provides height- and time-resolved measurements of the winds (Newsom and Krishnamurthy 2022). For operation on a moving platform, modifications to the existing DLPROF-WIND VAP are required to compensate for the effects of the platform motion. This report describes a parallel VAP, DLMCPROF-WIND, that was developed for computing motion-compensated wind profiles from ARM Doppler lidar data acquired during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) campaign, when the lidar was deployed on the German icebreaker Polarstern.

TRACER Radar b1 Data Processing: Corrections, Calibrations, and Processing Report

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility deployed the first ARM Mobile Facility (AMF1) to Houston, Texas for the Tracking Aerosol Convection Interactions Experiment (TRACER) field campaign. The TRACER campaign was conducted from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022, with an intensive operational period (IOP) from June 1 to September 30, 2022.

California Offshore Wind Resource Bias Investigation and Correction [Slides]

This presentation highlights the findings of an investigation into the causes of high wind speed bias in offshore California's 20-year wind resource dataset, CA20, released by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in 2020. Utilizing observations from floating lidars deployed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), considerable bias in modeled hub-height winds was identified. The study reveals that the choice of planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme significantly impacts wind speed accuracy, with the less common Yonsei University (YSU) scheme nearly eliminating bias compared to the widely used Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino (MYNN) scheme. Furthermore, it shows that one of the key factors contributing to this modeled bias is the fact that MYNN overestimates the frequency of stable atmospheric conditions in offshore California. As a result, an updated dataset, NOW-23, incorporating YSU as the PBL scheme, has been produced.

SVD Orbit Correction in Zgoubi And Examples: SATURNE, RHIC, EIC RCS

This Tech. Note describes the SVD technique in the Lorentz force numerical solver zgoubi. It has been used as a tool to study the effect of vertical orbit perturbation on polarization transmission in RHIC, and for the study of the compensation of orbit defects resulting from stray fields in the EIC RCS.

Soil Gas Survey Results Supporting Groundwater Correction Action Plan (GCAP) Development for the Moab Site

A soil gas survey was performed at the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site during the week of November 6, 2023. Soil gas surveys are used to characterize residual subsurface sources of volatile contaminants, such as volatile organic compounds, as well as contaminants that generate a surrogate indicator gas or otherwise influence soil gas composition. The primary objective of the Moab soil gas survey was to confirm, identify, quantify, and refine secondary contaminant source area locations for uranium and ammonium/ammonia (NH 4 + /NH 3 ) in the vadose zone and shallow groundwater. The overarching goal was to provide information to assist in developing the technical basis for the Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Specifically, the soil gas data will support the deployment of source control technologies; e.g., where supplementary capping, removal actions, or amendments might be beneficial.

Complete and Correct Transfer of Information (CACTI)

Many distributed systems, file transfer mechanisms, and message passing systems offer reliability mechanisms such as acknowledgements, retries, and durability. While these tools may be “good enough” for their typical use cases, they may not offer sufficient coverage for the wide range of faults that impact data transfers and communication. A gap in the reliability measures may lead to some small amount of data loss. Some high-consequence systems cannot tolerate the loss or corruption of even a single record. We present seven principles that will counter a wide range of faults and protect against data loss and corruption. These principles bring together lessons learned from a wide range of technologies and can inform appropriate system design and application usage. These principles will help readers reason on how prevent data loss in a multi-hop pipeline and how to properly use tools that may have a deficiency in reliability.
