Simulation Based Evaluation of Integrated Adaptive Control and Flight Planning Technologies

The objective of this work is to leverage NASA resources to enable effective evaluation of resilient aircraft technologies through simulation. This includes examining strengths and weaknesses of adaptive controllers, emergency flight planning algorithms, and flight envelope determination algorithms both individually and as an integrated package.

Mechanical properties of wire insulation automatically determined

Three separate mechanisms test the insulation on electrical wire specimens for mechanical resistance to flexure, abrasion or wear, and vibration. The test mechanisms perform the evaluation tests on insulated wire specimens in a chamber which can be controlled to simulate space or spacecraft cabin environments.

Mission definition study for Stanford relativity satellite. Volume 3: Appendices

An analysis is presented for the cost of the mission as a function of the following variables: amount of redundancy in the spacecraft, amount of care taken in building the spacecraft (functional and environmental tests, screening of components, quality control, etc), and the number of flights necessary to accomplish the mission. Thermal analysis and mathematical models for the experimental components are presented. The results of computer structural and stress analyses for support and cylinders are discussed. Reliability, quality control, and control system simulation by computer are also considered.

Flammability tests for Apollo command module and lunar module mockup

The flammability test program for Apollo command module and lunar module mockups is described. The fire safety design of the modules was verified by performing deliberate ignitions at many locations while the interior atmosphere was controlled to simulate realistic flight conditions. The data obtained for each test and restrictions on various materials are discussed.

Effects of prevaporized fuel on exhaust emissions of an experimental gas turbine combustor

Effects of fuel vaporization on the exhaust emission levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOX), carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbons, and smoke number were obtained in an experimental turbojet combustor segment. Two fuel injector types were used in which liquid ASTM A-1 jet fuel and vapor propane fuel were independently controlled to simulate varying degrees of vaporization. Tests were conducted over a range of inlet-air temperatures from 478 to 700 K (860 to 1260 R), pressures from 4 to 20 atmospheres, and combustor reference velocities from 15.3 to 27.4 m/sec (50 to 90 ft/sec). Converting from liquid to complete vapor fuel resulted in NOX reductions as much as 22 percent and smoke number reductions up to 51 percent.

Effect of fuel vapor concentrations on combustor emissions and performance

Effects of fuel vaporization on the exhaust emission levels of oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbons, and smoke number were obtained in an experimental turbojet combustor segment. Two different fuel injectors were used in which liquid ASTM A-1 jet fuel and vapor propane fuel were independently controlled to simulate varying degrees of vaporization. Tests were conducted over a range of inlet-air temperatures from 478 to 700 K, pressures from 4 to 20 atm, and combustor reference velocities from 15.3 to 27.4 m/sec. Converting from liquid to complete vapor fuel resulted in oxides of nitrogen reductions of as much as 22 percent and smoke number reductions up to 51 percent. Supplement data are also presented on flame emissivity, flame temperature, and primary-zone liner wall temperatures.

Flow tracing fidelity of scattering aerosol in laser Doppler velocimetry

An experimental method for determinating the flow tracing fidelity of a scattering aerosol used in laser Doppler velocimeters was developed with particular reference to the subsonic turbulence measurements. The method employs the measurement of the dynamic response of a flow seeding aerosol excited by acoustic waves. The amplitude and frequency of excitation were controlled to simulate the corresponding values of fluid turbulence components. Experimental results are presented on the dynamic response of aerosols over the size range from 0.1 to 2.0 microns in diameter and over the frequency range 100 Hz to 100 kHz. It was observed that unit density spherical scatterers with diameters of 0.2 microns followed subsonic air turbulence frequency components up to 100 kHz with 98 percent fidelity.
