Electronic magnification for astronomical camera tubes

Definitions, test schemes, and analyses used to provide variable magnification in the image section of the television sensor for large space telescopes are outlined. Experimental results show a definite form of magnetic field distribution is necessary to achieve magnification in the range 3X to 4X. Coil systems to establish the required field shapes were built, and both image intensifiers and camera tubes were operated at high magnification. The experiments confirm that such operation is practical and can provide satisfactory image quality. The main problem with such a system was identified as heating of the photocathode due to concentration of coil power dissipation in that vicinity. Suggestions for overcoming this disadvantage are included.

Magnetic suspension techniques for large scale aerodynamic testing

The potential utility of magnetic suspension techniques is discussed in the context of current efforts towards realistic aerodynamic simulation in wind tunnels. Design parameters are defined and problems of constructing large size facilities identified. A three stage strategy towards realizing a truly large scale magnetic suspension and balance with full research capability is outlined. Stage one, consisting of building and testing a prototype superconductor coil system to establish the feasibility of the concept has been completed successfully and its principal results are briefly described. This proven feasibility of using superconductors for magnetic suspensions, together with the successful demonstration of the cryogenic wind tunnel concept, appear to have opened the way to clean tunnel, high-Re aerodynamic testing. Results of a comparative analysis of scaling of several coil technologies for a specific magnetic suspension configuration, from the prototype size to a size compatible with the projected high Reynolds number cryogenic wind tunnel facility, are discussed in some detail.

The response of smoke detectors to pyrolysis and combustion products from aircraft interior materials

The following projects were completed as part of the effort to develop and test economically feasible fire-resistant materials for interior furnishings of aircraft as well as detectors of incipient fires in passenger and cargo compartments: (1) determination of the sensitivity of various contemporary gas and smoke detectors to pyrolysis and combustion products from materials commonly used in aircraft interiors and from materials that may be used in the future, (2) assessment of the environmental limitations to detector sensitivity and reliability. The tests were conducted on three groups of materials by exposure to the following three sources of exposure: radiant and Meeker burner flame, heated coil, and radiant source only. The first test series used radiant heat and flame exposures on easily obtainable test materials. Next, four materials were selected from the first group and exposed to an incandescent coil to provide the conditions for smoldering combustion. Finally, radiant heat exposures were used on advanced materials that are not readily available.

Bias-field equalizer for bubble memories

Magnetoresistive Perm-alloy sensor monitors bias field required to maintain bubble memory. Sensor provides error signal that, in turn, corrects magnitude of bias field. Error signal from sensor can be used to control magnitude of bias field in either auxiliary set of bias-field coils around permanent magnet field, or current in small coils used to remagnetize permanent magnet by infrequent, short, high-current pulse or short sequence of pulses.

Design study of superconducting magnets for a combustion magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator

Design trade off studies for 13 different superconducting magnet systems were carried out. Based on these results, preliminary design characteristics were prepared for several superconducting magnet systems suitable for use with a combustion driven MHD generator. Each magnet generates a field level of 8 T in a volume 1.524 m (60 in.) long with a cross section 0.254 m x 0.254 m (10 in. x 10 in.) at the inlet and 0.406 m x .406 m (16 in. x 16 in.) at the outlet. The first design involves a racetrack coil geometry intended for operation at 4.2 K; the second design uses a racetrack geometry at 2.0 K; and the third design utilizes a rectangular saddle geometry at 4.2 K. Each case was oriented differently in terms of MHD channel axis and main field direction relative to gravity in order to evaluate fabrication ease. All cases were designed such that the system could be disassembled to allow for alteration of field gradient in the MHD channel by changing the angle between coils. Preliminary design characteristics and assembly drawings were generated for each case.

Sustained arc ignition system

Circuitry for maintaining an arc or spark across a spark gap for a desired length of time is disclosed. A high voltage, direct current source is connected in series with a secondary winding of a high voltage, stepup transformer or coil and a spark gap such as a spark plug for example. The high voltage source may be on continuously or may be turned on and off by a control circuit such as a solid state switch which is, in turn, responsive to a timing device such as a set of ignition contact points or a magnetic pulse generator operating in synchronism with a spark ignition engine. The timing device also provides signals to a current switching circuit which interrupts, current flow through a primary winding of the high voltage coil at the prescribed time that a spark is desired at the spark gap.

Magnifying image intensifier

A magnetically focused image intensifier was improved to increase the usable range of magnification without degradation of image quality. The power requirements of the focusing coils are minimal. The arrangement of the focusing coils reverses the direction of the axial magnetic field distribution between the planes of the photocathode and the phosphor screen.

In orbit manufacture of solar reflector satellites

The implementation of an idea reported by Oberth (1929) is discussed. This idea is concerned with the reflection of sunlight to the ground by means of orbiting metal mirrors. The approach used for implementing Oberth's idea makes use of aluminized Mylar as a reflecting material which is supported with the aid of a structure which includes six booms and a peripheral mirror cable. Four low resistance one turn coils are formed by the structure. Magnetic forces for attitude maneuvers are obtained by energizing the coils. A bipropellant propulsion system is to be used to raise the initial 330 km circular parking orbit to a 330 by 1000 km elliptic orbit. Two thrusters are employed. They are oriented parallel to each other and the mirror surface. The mirror satellite can be completely folded so as to maximize the launch capability of the Shuttle.

The ISEE-1 and ISEE-2 plasma wave investigation

The ISEE-1 and ISEE-2 plasma wave experiments are designed to provide basic information on wave-particle interactions in the earth's magnetosphere and in the solar wind. The ISEE-1 plasma wave instrument uses three electric dipole antennas with lengths of 215, 73.5 and 0.61 m for electric field measurements, and a triaxial search coil antenna for magnetic field measurements. The ISEE-2 instrument uses two electric dipole antennas with lengths of 30 and 0.61 m for electric field measurements and a single-axis search coil antenna for magnetic field measurements. The primary scientific objectives of the experiments are described, including the resolution of space-time relationships of plasma wave phenomena and VLBI studies. The instrumentation is described, with emphasis on the antennas and the electronics.

High-acceleration mass drivers

High-acceleration mass drivers are discussed including the MD2 model of axial geometry, with individually powered drive coils of 13.1 cm diameter. Timing is derived through the interruption of light beams by the moving armature (bucket). Electric power is provided by the resonant discharge of sector capacitor banks through silicon-controlled rectifiers in a two-phase, quadrature circuit. The bucket flies in vacuum, guided by passive dynamic eddy-current magnetic forces, those currents flowing in strip conductors lining the inside of a nonconducting vacuum pipe. Quantitative measurements are obtained with a solid bucket carrying two superconducting coils with a current density of 25 kA/sq cm. A cryogenic station for cooling the bucket to liquid helium temperature is connected to the vacuum pipe.

On the swelling of rolled up vortex surfaces and the breakdown of the vortex core for slender wings

Simplified models of the vortex distribution over cylindrical surfaces are developed. The effect of a change of vortex strength was analyzed quantitatively by menas of potential theory. The considerable bulging of the cylindrical vortex sheet as a consequence of the change of the vortex strength is discussed. The coiling-up of the vortices rotation in opposite directions over the cylindrical surface renders the condition for instability and the subsequent large spreading of the vortex core. These processes occur without a positive pressure gradient being necessary in the field of flow surrounding the coiled up vortex sheet.

A matrix solution for the simulation of magnetic fields with ideal current loops

A matrix formulation is presented for describing axisymmetric magnetic field data with ideal current loops. A computer program written in APL is used to invert the matrix and hence to solve for the coil strengths which are used to represent the field data. Examples are given of the coil representation for (1) measured magnetic data, (2) refocusing fields, and (3) PPM focusing fields.

An 8 x 10 to the 5th bit bubble memory cell for spacecraft applications

A multiple chip magnetic bubble memory cell design developed for NASA embodies the low power, low weight, environmental tolerance and reliability necessary for successful operation in spacecraft launch and mission environments. Packaging of multiple chips in a common magnetic bias, drive coil assembly reduces weight and volume overhead per chip and also reduces the number of coil drive components required. This 8 x 10 to the 5th bit cell is conduction cooled and provides a metal and ceramic sealed hermetic chip environment.

Resistance Heater Helps Stirling-Engine Research

Stirling engine heater head consists of 18 double-turn coils of tubing, each of which is tightly wrapped with resistance-heating element, through which working gas flows. Coils form a toroid about periphery of heater-head body. With new resistance heater, total circuit resistance can be selected independently of tube geometry by changing size of wires and/or number of wire wraps around each tube.

Controlling Electron-Beam-Weld Focus

Control loop measures weld-spot temperature to regulate focus current. Square-wave generator modulates current in electron-beam focus coil so that focal point is varied between points slightly above and below surface of weld. Sensor detects intensity of light emitted by weld, proportional to fourth power of temperature at hottest part of weld spot. Sensor signal is detected by chopper demodulator synchronized by square-wave generator, to determine whether average position of focal point is higher than, coincident with, or lower than optimum point; and focus coil current is adjusted accordingly.

Stabilized Zeeman split laser

The development of a stablized Zeeman split laser for use in a polarization profilometer is discussed. A Hewlett-Packard laser was modified to stabilize the Zeeman split beat frequency thereby increasing the phase measurement accuracy from the Hewlett-Packard 3 degrees to an accuracy of .01 degrees. The addition of a two layered inductive winding converts the laser to a current controlled oscillator whose frequency is linearly related to coil current. This linear relationship between coil current and laser frequency permits phase locking the laser frequency to a stable crystal controlled reference frequency. The stability of the system is examined and the equipment operation procedures are outlined.

A conceptual design study of a high temperature solar thermal receiver (added tasks 6 and 7)

The key component of this concept is a coiled tube of silicon nitride which acts as a heat exchanger appears to be ideal from the standpoint of utilizing structural ceramics at around 2500 F under severe thermal shock conditions. However the size and configuration of this coil are beyond the state of the art for fabricating such materials as silicon nitride and carbide. A two-task program to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of extruding and forming a section of thin walled silicon nitride tubing was undertaken as an addition to the original program. A promising polyvinyl butyral-based binder lubricant was identified. Fourteen full size extrusion experiments were conducted. Two trial firings of 1-1/4 turn helices were made.
