Wood-to-Fuel Demonstration Project for California's Transportation Sector using Autothermal Pyrolysis (Non-Proprietary Summary Process Hazard Assessment)

Frontline has prioritized personnel safety, equipment preservation, and environmental protection throughout the design process of the autothermal pyrolysis unit. To facilitate a safe design, Frontline completed an informal hazards and operability (HAZOP) study and a formal HAZOP study, and employ management of change procedures. The result of these safety procedures is a plant that will function in a safe manner with a limited and acceptable amount of risk. Frontline took an approach it used in previous projects to execute a preliminary, internally facilitated hazards and operability (HAZOP) study. While this HAZOP study was performed without any subsequent change tracking, it enables a group of well-trained engineers to consider the safety implications of each part of the plant in a thorough and methodical manner. Frontline chose to bring in a pyrolysis consultant (Daren Daugaard of Burning Oak Energy) to participate in the review. Following the preliminary HAZOP and once the detailed design work was nearing completion, Frontline performed a formal HAZOP with a third-party facilitator, Jason Stittleburg of Novetus Engineering. Although the plant is not subject to process safety management (PSM) requirements, this formal HAZOP was performed in accordance with OSHA regulations deemed reasonable for PSM. Finally, after the formal HAZOP was conducted, Frontline maintained a safe system by implementing and following management of change procedures on each substantial change to the process. Frontline has kept a record of each subsequent change made to the formal HAZOP P&IDs. The process hazard assessment process allowed Frontline to find and correct several unacceptable configurations within the plant.

Wood-to-Fuel for California's Transportation Sector using Autothermal Pyrolysis: Kickoff Questionnaire for Benefits Analysis of CEC Projects

This is the first of three questionnaires that you will be asked to complete over the course of the agreement. Please type your responses directly into this document in the spaces below each question. Use as much space as you need; the form automatically creates more space within each response field. In addition, you may submit additional documents, spreadsheets, or other files. Acceptable filetypes are MS Word, MS Excel, and PDF. Additional files do not need to follow any particular format, unless specified by the particular questionnaire designed for your project.

Wood-to-Fuel for California's Transportation Sector using Autothermal Pyrolysis (Progress Report for FRD-17-002)

Accomplishments this period: Subcontract with Frontline BioEnergy, LLC has been executed and is in place (Task 1). List of TAC members is awaiting input from the CEC including any additional members of their own choosing before we finalize confirmation with the listed individuals. This is also holding off on the documented TAC Member commitment, and the DRAFT TAC Meeting Schedule, as we need to know who is approved to be on the TAC before we get commitments and start setting meetings. We are awaiting input from the CEC as to a requested date for the CPR#1. It was originally set for the beginning of July (July 7th), but as the CEC needs to conduct this, we need their input on the revised date. The additional wood feed stock was sent to ISU for analysis of autothermal pyrolysis products on July 15. The Kern refinery continues to express interest in using the bio-oil produced from the demonstration in one or more of their plants. We believe this analysis information will be a critical component of what we share at our first Workshop later this summer

Battery Performance, Thermal, and Life Modeling for Southern California Edison (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report)

The objective of this project is to develop battery performance models, thermal models and life models for SCE to use in simulation and analysis of grid services involving energy storage. NREL will fit the models to three separate chemistries using test data provided by SCE. The dataset for each chemistry will include electrical, thermal and aging response to different temperatures and cycling conditions, measured under a variety of cell-level and module-level experiments described in SCE test protocol documents. Once tuned to a test dataset, the battery system model software will provide predictions of battery energy and power loss, and thus cycle and calendar life, for any energy storage grid service power profile of interest to SCE. The automated battery life modeling and simulation tool can also be applied to any other grid battery systems as long as necessary input data is available to accelerate battery model development and battery lifetime analysis.

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC Site 300 Facility ID N-472 Toxics Emissions Inventory Plan for AB 2588 California Air Toxics "Hot Spots" Information and Assessment Act of 1987

The Air Toxics "Hot Spots" Information and Assessment Act (AB 2588 or the “Act”) was enacted in September 1987. Under the Act, stationary sources are required to report the types and quantities of certain toxic substances their facilities routinely release into the air. AB 2588 is designed to provide information to state and local agencies and to the general public on the extent of airborne emissions from stationary sources and the potential public health impacts of those emissions. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (the District) is mandated by the State to implement AB 2588.

A publication proposal to the University of California

The purpose of this book is to profile, chapter by chapter, each of the 18 Nobel laureates who contributed to the laboratory’s wartime efforts. Through narrative, nonfiction profiles with fascinating historical photos and documents, readers will learn who these scientists were, what they accomplished, and why it mattered. The goal of this book is to educate readers by creating a published chronicle of this important history based on documents and photographs that are a part of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s National Security Research Center. These 18 scientists have two things in common: their wartime work at Los Alamos and their Nobel Prizes. For the first time ever, both are presented as one story.

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLCSite 300: Toxic Emissions Inventory Plan for ABA 2588 California Air Toxics "Hot Spots" Information and Assessment Act of 1987 (Revision 3.0)

On March 6, 2015, The State Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) adopted changes to the Air Toxics Hot Spots Program Guidance Manual for the Preparation of Health Risk Assessments. These revisions were designed to incorporate three technical support documents and to provide enhanced protection of children as required under state law (SB 25, Escutia, 1999). Due to these recent changes, and the corresponding potential increases in calculated health risk, the District notified LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL SECURITY, LLC that we must be re-evaluated under AB 2588. Pursuant to the Air Toxics "Hot Spots" Information and Assessment Act of 1987, we have prepared a comprehensive, site-specific Toxics Emissions Inventory Plan. The plan specifies in detail how LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL SECURITY, LLC will inventory our facility's emissions of all toxic substances on the list of substances subject to the Act. The plan provides a comprehensive and detailed description of the methods that will be used to quantify air releases or potential air releases of listed substances from all points of release. The plan also includes quantification methods which result in accurate and comprehensive characterization of releases and comply with all applicable requirements of the “Hot Spots” regulation.
