Metrics and Analytical Frameworks for Valuing Energy Efficiency and Distributed Energy Resources in the Built Environment: Preprint

This paper summarizes efforts to develop new—and enhance existing—analytical frameworks and metrics to quantify the value that grid-interactive efficient homes with solar (GEB-solar homes) can provide. Industry is working to characterize and understand these capabilities and benefits, but existing analytical frameworks for evaluating energy efficiency (EE) are often siloed from those that evaluate distributed energy resources (DERs). Five metrics were adapted from an extensive literature review and applied to case studies of a modeled home in Riverside, California: ramp up/down, cover factor demand/supply, and curtailable load. Eight different technology scenarios were analyzed using a more tightly connected suite of building-to-grid models (BEopt, REopt, ReEDS, and PLEXOS). Additionally, an initial version of the Cambium tool was developed, characterizing the marginal prices and emissions from NREL’s 2018 Standard Scenarios. These grid costs were extended to a time-varying proxy retail rate and applied as part of a new grid alignment metric. In the results, a more integrated combination of GEB-solar technologies led to a higher cover factor demand—the percentage of gross home load covered by on-site solar—however, a benchmark was required to determine what range of cover factor was “best” for given grid conditions. To that end, a grid alignment cost metric was applied to the case study scenarios. The average cost to serve the net load of the home decreased from a median of ~$0.24/kWh to ~$0.10/kWh when the most integrated technology scenario was optimized towards the grid pricing proxy versus the time-of-use (TOU) rate.

Building Blocks for Secure and Prosperous Defense Critical Supply Chains: A Case Study from Microelectronics

Securing defense-critical supply chains, built on resilient and sustainable microelectronics fabrication and deployment, is a national imperative and one that requires an investment in basic and applied research, development, and deployment into industries in (and out of) the Defense Industrial Base (DIB). Critical next steps include the development of pilots for revolutionary concepts in a new formal verification model and the Cyber-Physical Passport (CPP) concept for chain of custody. Critical infrastructure leadership should take action with a sense of urgency. Working in conjunction with the Under Secretary for Acquisition and Sustainment, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering should establish pilot programs with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the service labs to build and test both concepts in legacy and new system development.. Additionally, the Pentagon may be aware that an existing Manufacturing Innovation Institute is piloting, with the semiconductor industry, cyber innovations to provide verifiable security properties and guarantees of physical functions to build a more cyber secure, resilient and efficient micro-electronics supply chain.

Rooftop Unit (RTU) Maintenance Guide

The commercial buildings industry has long emphasized affordability, energy efficiency, and useful service life in rooftop unit (RTU) equipment. The trade-offs between these characteristics can impact decisions about the initial cost of equipment and ongoing operating costs. Often, the desire for lower initial costs leads to adoption of low-efficiency systems or neglect of proper maintenance in the interest of short-term cost savings. Maintenance of these systems is a critical step to ensure system efficiency and reliability, low operating costs, and a reasonable payback period. This guide is intended for facility managers who own or are interested in purchasing and installing RTUs and need to familiarize themselves with the maintenance requirements. This resource contains best practices, important considerations, and additional information related to commercial RTU equipment, but does not replace manufacturer-specific instructions.

Integration of Storage in the DC Link of a Full Converter-Based Distributed Wind Turbine

Energy storage is known to support the dispatchability of variable renewable resources. In this paper, we model a battery energy storage system (BESS) integrated with the DC link of a Type IV full converter-based wind turbine and the necessary controls to achieve efficient dispatch. To support the validation of control methodologies, we build a detailed model of a Type IV research wind turbine at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Controls Advanced Research Turbine (CART 3), and we integrated a lithium-ion BESS model in grid-following mode into the model. The simulation results illustrate the sizing and control of the DC link-integrated BESS for a given variable wind resource and varying dispatch strategies (i.e., under constant, uncertain, and ramping wind scenarios). The integrated storage can smooth variabilities in distributed wind output, hedge against uncertainties, provide the ramping capability, as well as support stability under voltage and frequency transients. All of these have been illustrated in MATLAB/Simulink.
