De-Risking Large-Scale PV Systems Through Data Analytics

Large-scale photovoltaic system performance analysis is being conducted within the US Department of Energy's-sponsored PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative. This collaboration with commercial PV system owners collects and evaluates PV field performance data, and provides reports on aggregated results. Drawing on over 2200 sites across the US and over 24,000 separate PV inverters we have collected in excess of 8.3 gigawatts (GW) of performance data, representing 6-7% of the entire US installed PV capacity. A mixture of utility-scale and large commercial systems are represented, averaging 4.1 megawatts (MW) in size and 5 years in age. Initial results show average system degradation rates at -0.75% / year, which is slightly higher than historically reported module-level values of -0.5%/year. We also found that the availability of systems averaged 97.7%, which is lower than the typical 99% uptime assumed by many project economic forecasts. Given these results, we compared monthly performance with expected production values, based on satellite weather data and a simple PVWatts performance model. We found that systems were performing within 10% of monthly expectation over 90% of the time, with a fleet average vs expected monthly value of 0.994. We also evaluated the impact of extreme weather events on system performance, and found a range of short-term and longer-term performance effects ranging from grid outage, system downtime, module damage and accelerated long-term degradation rate.

Scalable Graph Analytics and HPC Operational Enhancement: Parallel Computing and ML/DL Innovations

Parallel computing plays a pivotal role in the efficient processing of large-scale graphs. Complex network analysis stands as a capti- vating research frontier, holding promise across diverse scientific domains such as sociology, biology, online media, and recommenda- tion systems. In this era, Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) have emerged as indispensable tools, underpinning remarkable technological achievements. Within this dynamic landscape, my research revolves around advancing parallel algorithms tailored for large-scale graph operations. To achieve this, I harness the power of cutting-edge technologies including OpenMP, MPI, HIP, and CUDA, on the High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms to unlock optimal performance. I also apply ML/DL techniques to HPC operational data, to streamline the monitoring and maintenance of supercomputers, alleviating the complexities associated with their upkeep and enhancing user support. My research echoes the syn- ergy between parallel computing, large-scale graph analysis, and ML/DL, improving computational efficiency and user experience.

Molten Salt Sampling Techniques and Analytical Approaches

Recent global interest in pyroprocessing and molten salt reactors has brought salt sampling methods and techniques back to the forefront of nuclear safeguards concerns. Issues with uranium supplies have also encouraged various countries to pursue advanced nuclear fuel cycles. Tracking nuclear material in molten salt has proven to be a challenge and updating molten salt sampling will greatly help in this endeavor. Molten salt is problematic to sample due to salt stratification, lack of homogeneity, solids, and difficulty with hot cell adaptations. Various salt sampling techniques have been used since before the 1960s including surface, spoon/spatula, and bar solidification. Since then, new types of sampling techniques have been developed to improve sampling results. These include rod/dip, pipet, suction, filtered sampling along with devices such as the Valve Core Sampler and the Multi-Level Sampler. These different approaches are being analyzed and improved upon along with developing requirements for an improved salt sampling device. Work continues to develop salt samplers that are more robust, easier to segment, collect at a specific depth, can work with filters, and can collect fines. Sampling parameters are also being narrowed in terms of stirring, settling time, filtration, depth, etc. In the future, we hope to address deficiencies for process control and nuclear material accountancy control by determining the best way to collect samples that minimizes contaminants and is representative. A compilation of salt sampling approaches, analyses techniques, and an evaluation of findings will be presented.

SULI Project Report: Mu2e otsdaq Documentation and Analytics

This report outlines the history of the CLFV puzzle, gives an overview of the Mu2e Experiment, and details the results of the DOE (Department of Energy)-funded SULI (Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship) research completed over the summer 2024 on site at Fermilab. The project focused on the otsdaq software responsible for data acquisition. The project included drafting updated documentation for new users, including new procedures relevant for the Alma- Linux 9 operating system update, and the UPS package managing system replacement with Spack (scientific software package manager). A new art module (ReadTriggerCounts) to track trigger rates was created, with compatibility to be displayed via a Grafana server. The author also assisted in calorimeter cable installation in the detector hall.
