Achieving Large-Scale, High-Resolution, Full Shell Replicated X-Ray Optics: Budgeting for Sources of Spatial Resolution Errors

Technology for a large-area, high-angular resolution mirror module for a future Great Observatory x-ray mission is progressing along different paths. To date, none of these are fully developed. Work at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) seeks to leverage the benefits of full shell optics while exploring the limits of using shell replication technology for optics production. Here, we provide an updated accounting of spatial-resolution-constraining error terms to give context to recent improvements in MSFC replicated optics, as well as guidance and justification for current and future directions of research. Content includes strawman error allocations for an optical system that is parametrically Lynx-like, where the replicated-optics technology stands relative to these allocations, and methodology for mapping development plans to efficiently identify the limiting factors and approaches to overcoming these.

GPM’s 10-Year Achievements in NASA

This presentation provides the NASA perspective on 10 years of Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission activity, in conjunction with the Japanese partners. It begins by recalling the U.S. contribution to the design and construction of the GPM Core Observatory, and the role of the GPM Constellation of passive microwave satellites of opportunity. It shows a few selected results, notes the U.S. personnel involved, and points out the importance of field campaigns, then ends with some discussion of the impact that the data are having on the scientific and user community.

Method for achieving sustained anisotropic crystal growth on the surface of a silicon melt

An apparatus for growing a crystalline sheet from a melt includes a cold block assembly. The cold block assembly may include a cold block and a shield surrounding the cold block and being at an elevated temperature with respect to that of the cold block, the shield defining an opening disposed along a surface of the cold block proximate a melt surface that defines a cold area comprising a width along a first direction of the cold block, the cold area operable to provide localized cooling of a region of the melt surface proximate the cold block. The apparatus may further include a crystal puller arranged to draw a crystalline seed in a direction perpendicular to the first direction when the cold block assembly is disposed proximate the melt surface.
