The Short-Term Prediction of Universal Time and Length-Of-Day Using Atmospheric Angular Momemtum

Methods to combine the diverse set of geodetic measurements of Earth orientation that are currently available, and to interpolate and extrapolate these data to generate an optimal estimate of Earth orientation, have been under development at JPL for a number of years. The strategy currently in use is a Kalman filtering scheme based on Earth orentation parameters and their excitation functions that incorporates stochastic models of the important physical processes and takes into account the variable form, quality, and temporal density of the data provided by diffent measurement services.

Our Place in the Universe: History of Astronomy - Session 1

This session includes a very broad overview of a couple of the major ideas of astronomy, along with demonstrations of Earth's motions that, give rise to the seasons, show us the "faces" of Venus (and the Moon), and result in retrograde motion of the outer planets.

The Search for Life in the Universe

Each recent report of liquid water existing elsewhere in the solar system has reverberated through the international press and excited the imagination of humankind. We have come to realize that where there is liquid water on Earth, virtually no matter what the physical conditions, there is life. Dr. Lynn Rothschild, an evolutionary biologist known for her work on life in extreme environments and a founder of the field of astrobiology, tells us about intriguing new data. The prevalence of potential abodes for life in our solar system and beyond, the survival of microbes in the space environment, modeling of the potential for transfer of life between celestial bodies, and advances in synthetic biology suggest that life could be more common than previously thought. Are we truly "alone"?

Structure in the 3D Galaxy Distribution. III. Fourier Transforming the Universe: Phase and Power Spectra

We demonstrate the effectiveness of a relatively straightforward analysis of the complex 3D Fourier transform of galaxy coordinates derived from redshift surveys. Numerical demonstrations of this approach are carried out on a volume-limited sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey redshift survey. The direct unbinned transform yields a complex 3D data cube quite similar to that from the Fast Fourier Transform of finely binned galaxy positions. In both cases, deconvolution of the sampling window function yields estimates of the true transform. Simple power spectrum estimates from these transforms are roughly consistent with those using more elaborate methods. The complex Fourier transform characterizes spatial distributional properties beyond the power spectrum in a manner different from (and we argue is more easily interpreted than) the conventional multipoint hierarchy. We identify some threads of modern large-scale inference methodology that will presumably yield detections in new wider and deeper surveys.

Numerical demonstrations of this approach are carried out on a volume-limited sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey redshift survey. The direct unbinned transform yields a complex 3D data cube quite similar to that from the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of finely binned galaxy positions. In both cases deconvolution of the sampling window function yields estimates of the true transform. Simple power spectrum estimates from these transforms are roughly consistent with those using more elaborate methods.
