Development of a 120-mm Aperture Nb 3 Sn Dipole Coil With Stress Management

This paper describes a 120-mm aperture 2-layer dipole coil with stress management (SM) developed at Fermilab based on cos-theta coil geometry. A model of the coil support structure made of plastic was printed using additive manufacturing technology and used for practice coil winding. The real coil support structure was printed using the 316 stainless steel. The results of the SM structure size control and the key coil fabrication steps are reported in the paper. Finally, the design of coil SM structure and the coil FEA in the dipole mirror test configurations are presented and discussed.

A Review of the Mechanical Properties of Materials Used in Nb 3 Sn Magnets for Particle Accelerators

Superconducting magnets experience significant thermo-mechanical loads throughout their life cycle. These are introduced by the electro-magnetic forces during powering, but also by the prestress applied in many magnet designs. Further to this, the large thermal excursion that components of different materials experience can generate significant internal forces. The loads are also experienced by the superconducting coils, whose critical current can decrease as a consequence of the applied strain. It is then crucial to predict the overall mechanical behavior and conservatively design a magnet, avoiding failure of the mechanical components and of the superconducting coils. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is generally used to perform these tasks, but its results rely heavily on the material properties and models used. This is in particular true for the coil composite, which is simplified to allow reasonable model sizes in full magnet models. Here we present the state-of-art knowledge of the mechanical properties of the materials mostly used in superconducting magnet construction. We review elastic and plastic properties at room and cryogenic temperature, thermal contraction, and summarize the state-of-art failure criteria for these materials. Finally, the paper summarizes the present understanding of the mechanical behavior and limits of Nb3Sn coils. For the first time, an orthotropic failure criteria is proposed.

Ultraviolet digital holographic microscopy (DHM) of micron-scale particles from shocked Sn ejecta

A cloud of very fast, O (km/s), and very fine, O (µm), particles may be ejected when a strong shock impacts and possibly melts the free surface of a solid metal. To quantify these dynamics, this work develops an ultraviolet, long-working distance, two-pulse Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) configuration and is the first to replace film recording with digital sensors for this challenging application. A proposed multi-iteration DHM processing algorithm is demonstrated for automated measures of the sizes, velocities, and three-dimensional positions of non-spherical particles. Ejecta as small as 2 µm diameter are successfully tracked, while uncertainty simulations indicate that particle size distributions are accurately quantified for diameters ≥4 µm. These techniques are demonstrated on three explosively driven experiments. Measured ejecta size and velocity statistics are shown to be consistent with prior film-based recording, while also revealing spatial variations in velocities and 3D positions that have yet to be widely investigated. Having eliminated time-consuming analog film processing, the methodologies proposed here are expected to significantly accelerate future experimental investigation of ejecta physics.

Nb$^{3}$Sn Technology for Low-beta linacs

Nb3Sn is the most advanced potential successor for niobium in superconducting RF accelerator cavities. Nb3Sn has a significantly higher critical temperature (18.3 K) compared to that of niobium (9.2 K). This has a large effect on the BCS surface resistance, and therefore, on the dynamic RF losses at 4.5 K. The higher critical temperature allows two important changes for cavity and cryomodule design. First, the lower BCS losses allow the designer to use a higher frequency, translating to physically smaller cavities and cryomodules. Second, the low dynamic losses allow the use of stand-alone cryocoolers instead of complex helium refrigerators and distribution systems. Fabrication of a prototype 218 MHz cavity, test results, and continuing challenges are discussed.

Physics of the Serrano Sn Transport Package

Serrano is a software package for simulating photon transport in moving material. It presently supports 1-D, unstructured 2-D for a wide variety of element types, and 3-D for tetrahedra and hexahedra. The package is designed to be a component of larger codes, such as radiation hydrodynamics codes. Only the radiation transport equations are solved by Serrano itself.

Simulations of Nb$_3$Sn Layer RF Field Limits Due to Thermal Impedance

Nb3Sn performance in RF fields is limited to fields far below its superheating critical field. Poor thermal conductivity of Nb3Sn has been speculated to be the reason behind this limit. In order to better understand the contribution of Nb3Sn thermal conductivity to its RF performance, we simulated numerically with Matlab program*(based on SRIMP and HEAT codes) thelimiting fields under different realistic conditions. Our simulations indicate that limiting fields observed presently in the experiments with RF fields cannot be explained by the thermal impedance of Nb3Sn alone. The results change significantly in the presence of higher losses due to extrinsic mechanisms.

Production of High Specific Activity 72 Se/ 72 As, 117m Sn and 203 Pb for Research and Clinical Applications: Effective target design, recycling of target material and radioisotope separation

This grant involved four objectives for producing high specific activity radionuclides using reactor and accelerator technologies that would find use in medical, industrial and research applications. This grant continued a collaboration between the scientists at the University of Washington (UW), the University of Missouri (MU) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and addresses the need for high specific activity radionuclides, both reactor- and accelerator-produced, and for the training and education of radiochemists in isotope production, separations and precursor syntheses. All three institutions were involved in the projects, but to different degrees. The chemistry graduate students (Ph.D. program at MU) may have participated in an internship at one of the other institutions for training and project translation/facilitation.

First Results of AUP $Nb_{3}Sn$ Quadrupole Horizontal Tests

The Large Hadron Collider will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its luminosity by a factor of ~10. A crucial part of this upgrade will be replacement of the NbTi final focus magnets with Nb3Sn magnets that achieve a ~50% increase in the field strength. This will be the first ever large-scale implementation of Nb3Sn magnets in a particle accelerator. This talk will present the program to fabricate these components and first results from horizontal tests of fully assembled cryo assemblies.

Conceptual Design of A 20 T Dipole Based on Hybrid REBCO/Nb 3 Sn Cos-theta Coil

This paper presents a design concept of an HTS/LTS hybrid dipole with 50 mm aperture and 20 T nominal field based on a cos-theta coil and a cold iron yoke. The HTS part of magnet coil uses REBCO Twisted Stacked Tape cable. The LTS part is graded and made of two Nb3Sn Rutherford cables. Due to high sensitivity of HTS/LTS coils to large stresses and strains at high fields, a Stress Management (SM) concept combined with the cos-theta coil geometry is used. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed.
