A Simplified Method for Estimating Subsonic Lift-Curve Slope at Low Angles of Attack for Irregular Planform Wings

A simplified method is presented for estimating the lift-curve slope of irregular planform wings at subsonic speeds and low angles of attack. The present process is an extension of the method derived in NACA Technical Note 3911 and enables quick estimates of subsonic liftcurve slope, to be made whereas more refined procedures require considerable time and computation. Comparison of experimental and estimated values for a wide range of wing planforms having discontinuous spanwise sweep variation indicates good agreement. A comparison of the present procedure with a 20-step vortex method (NACA Research Memorandum L50L13) indicated good agreement for a variable-sweep configuration.

Development of Electronic Data Processing /EDP/ augmented management system

To tailor the existing Unified Flight Analysis System to management data rather than technical data, a pilot model could be produced in breadboard form, using electronic data processing, in a matter of a few months at very moderate cost. Such a system lends itself to continuous refinement.

Feasibility Study 30 Watts per Pound Rollup Solar Array

Principal efforts in this reporting period were applied to preparation of the detail design of the array structure and mechanisms and to manufacturing drawings for a demonstration model of the selected design concept. Analytical support focused on substantiation of the detail design. Additional studies were performed of dynamic criteron effects on components of the wrap drum. Thermal studies were extended to evaluate another thin film (preferred) material for the substrate and its influence on solar cell temperatures. Electrical design considerations included feasibility studies and ramifications of using a new, larger size, solar cell and a new coverglass application concept. Preliminary evaluations suggest improvement in the array power to weight characteristic and net savings in the estimated cost of cell installation. Weight estimates have been up-dated in keeping with refinements in detail design. Performance of this contractor's rollout solar array design is now projected as capable of producing 31.6 watts per pound of weight; excludes estimated improvements from use of new solar cell design.

Body-fixed, Three-Axis Reference System Study: Phase II Final Report

This Phase II Body-Fixed, Three-Axis Reference System Study Final Report is the result of a follow-on contract awarded by NASAIMSFC to TRW Systems in April 1966, under Contract No, NASS-20209. of the Phase I1 Study was to refine and supplement the strapdown inertial ’ reference assembly (SIRA), software, airborne computer, and alignment analyses performed during Phase I of the same contract. The purpose Specifically, the Phase I results in many areas were those which could be achieved using simplifying assumptions (linearization) and hand analyses. It was the purpose of the Phase I1 studies to investigate the validity of the Phase I results by means of more sophisticated computer simulations, in which no simplifying assumptions were made, for each of the areas analyzed. The Phase 11 analyses were directed, therefore, at confirming the analytical feasibility asserted by the Phase I results.

Generation of sonic power during welding

Generation of intense sonic and ultrasonic power in the weld zone, close to the puddle, reduces the porosity and refinement of the grain. The ac induction brazing power supply is modified with long cables for deliberate addition of resistance to that circuit. The concept is extensible to the molding of metals and plastics.

Numerical solutions of differential equations

Various numerical methods for solving differential equations were analyzed and refined in an effort to develop a method which was adaptable to a large class of problems. The prime capabilities of the method included accuracy, numerical stability, and economic use of computer time. In multistep processes the corrector was changed at each step.
