Strain-Driven Surface Reactivity in Magnesium-Ion Battery Cathodes

Successful deployment of a Mg-ion battery requires cathodes that can achieve reversible Mg intercalation and high energy density. Recent theoretical and experimental studies indicated that the overall transport is likely limited by sluggish Mg transport at the cathode-electrolyte interface and not Mg diffusion through bulk. Here, in this work, we investigated the surface electrochemical activity of Mg ions by using a spinel-structured manganese oxide thin-film model system and in situ X-ray scattering. In combination with post-mortem microscopy analysis, we found that magnesium insertion was more favorable than subsequent extraction near the surface of the Mg x Mn 2 O 4 film, resulting in overmagnesiation, and eventually amorphization of the surface. This structural irreversibility and high overpotential required for Mg extraction could explain significant voltage hysteresis and Mg surface enrichment previously observed in bulk cathodes. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the tendency for the Mg surface enrichment could be associated with Mg diffusion kinetics, which varies with the strain state evolved due to constrained film volume change during Mg insertion and extraction. Particularly, out-of-plane Mg migration was predicted to be favorable in the tensile strain rather than in the compressive case.

Sequential Infiltration Synthesis of Multinary Metal Oxides: The Role of Precursor Diffusion and Reactivity

Understanding volatile metal–organic precursor transport in polymer matrices during sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) is critical to the design of hybrid materials of tailored composition and uniform structure. Here, we investigate the diffusion and reaction behavior of diethylzinc (DEZ) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrices with variable indium and zinc incorporation. Unlike conventional SIS where precursors adduct or react directly with the polymer backbone, DEZ shows minimal interaction with PMMA. However, DEZ may interact strongly with In–OH or Zn–OH moieties that are previously incorporated into a PMMA thick film. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling, and EDX line scans, we quantify Zn incorporation as a function of exposure time, polymer thickness, and previous infiltration steps. The Zn distribution evolves from surface-localized to deep within the ∼1 μm thick film with increasing DEZ exposures up to 30 min. A reaction-diffusion model incorporating a hindering factor to capture diffusivity decay due to product accumulation reproduces the Zn depth profile and yields physically meaningful parameters to guide future growth. Furthermore, this study provides a framework for interpreting metal–organic precursor infiltration behavior and highlights the utility of model-guided SIS process design.

Analysis of the Reactive CO 2 Surface Flux in Electrocatalytic Aqueous Flow Reactors

We study how the mass transfer of a chemical species in shear flow is suppressed by the production of a second species that partially reacts away the first species. The second species is produced at the surface with the first species as a reactant. Our work is directly motivated by electrochemical CO 2 reduction in aqueous flow reactors, where OH– molecules generated by the CO evolution reaction react away CO 2 molecules, ultimately inhibiting the mass transfer of CO 2 to the cathode surface. We derive a simple approximation of the Sherwood number, a dimensionless measure of the mass flux into the surface, as a function of the Péclet number, surface Damköhler number, and bulk Damköhler number, and we compare our approximation to numerical solutions of the governing equations. We find that in the diffusion-limited regime, the Sherwood number is well described by the classical Graetz-Lévêque result reduced by a reaction factor due to the competing bulk reaction; with the stoichiometry relevant to electrochemical CO 2 reduction, this reaction factor is 1/2. While the model problem we solve provides insight into how OH– production affects CO 2 mass transfer, experimental systems often involve more complex chemistry. We thus also show how a common buffered electrolyte, KHCO 3 , affects our results.

Optimization Modeling for Advanced Syngas to Olefin Reactive Systems

Reactor designs with mixed catalysts play an important role in transforming a multiple reactor system to single-shot reactors. In addition to savings in capital and ease of implementation, single-shot reactors are useful to break equilibrium limitations, thereby increasing the yield and selectivity of desired product as shown in previous studies. However, the nonlinear and highly exothermic nature of mixed-catalyst systems makes it difficult for commercial process simulation and optimization tools to optimize these systems. This study describes the development and application of optimization strategies for mixed-catalyst, single-shot reactors for syngas to olefin (STO) processes. Finding the optimal catalyst distribution is challenging and requires advanced solution strategies for singular optimal control problems, which are poorly conditioned and often lead to flat response surfaces. The graded bed and partial-moving finite-element approaches are used to find the optimal catalyst distribution that maximizes the olefins yield. A 1.3% increase in the yield is observed from one zone to three zones. The yield further improves from three zones to the exact infinite dimensional solution by 0.2%. This improvement can be realized in practice by changing only the catalyst distribution, without any extra investment. Lastly, the results suggest that a mixed-catalyst single shot reactor bed can be applied to other reaction mechanisms to increase reactor performance.
