Stress concentrations in cylindrically orthotropic plates with radial variation of the compliances

The stresses in a circular composite plate with a central circular hole in which the material is cylindrically orthotropic and the compliances vary with distance from the center are calculated. A numerical example shows that an arrangement of the fibers at predominantly + or - 45 deg to the radii in the neighborhood of the hole reduces the stress concentrations significantly in an otherwise quasi-isotropic plate.

Pressure-Letdown Plates for Coal Gasifiers

Variation of pseudoporous plates used with coal gasifiers in pressure letdown stage of processing minimize clogging. Rotating plates containing variable gap annuli continually change flow path to enable erosionless reduction of gas pressure. Particles that otherwise clog porous plugs pass through gaps.

Ion sputter textured graphite electrode plates

A specially textured surface of pyrolytic graphite exhibits extremely low yields of secondary electrons and reduced numbers of reflected primary electrons after impingement of high energy primary electrons. Electrode plates of this material are used in multistage depressed collectors. An ion flux having an energy between 500 iV and 1000 iV and a current density between 1.0 mA/sq cm and 6.0 mA/sq cm produces surface roughening or texturing which is in the form of needles or spires. Such textured surfaces are especially useful as anode collector plates in high tube devices.

Buckling and vibration of any prismatic assembly of shear and compression loaded anisotropic plates with an arbitrary supporting structure

The computer program designated 'VIPASA', which accurately treats buckling and vibration in prismatic plate assemblies with a response that varies sinusoidally in the longitudinal direction, has been found to be limited by the production of an in-plane shear loading of component plates that produces skewed mode shapes. These do not conform to desired support conditions. This problem is presently overcome through a coupling of the VIPASA stiffness matrices for different wavelength responses by means of the Lagrangian Multipliers method. The theory extends to supports at arbitrary locations, and even to the support provided by any elastic structure. The generality and capabilities of VIPASA have been retained in the computer program designated 'VICON', which permits constraints and a supporting structure consisting of any number of transverse beam columns.

A mixed finite element for the analysis of laminated plates

A new mixed shear-flexible finite element based on the Hellinger-Reissner's variational principle is developed. The element is constructed using a mixed formulation of the shear deformation theory of laminated composite plates, and consists of three displacements, two shear rotations, and three moments as the independent degrees of freedom. The numerical convergence and accuracy characteristics of the element are investigated for bending of laminated anisotropic composite plates. The element is relatively simple to construct and has better accuracy and convergence features when compared to other conventional finite elements.

Microchannel plate EUV detectors for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer

The design and operating characteristics of the prototype imaging microchannel plate (MCP) detector for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Satellite are discussed. It is shown that this detector has achieved high position resolution performance (greater than 512 x 512 pixels) and has low (less than one percent) image distortion. In addition, the channel plate scheme used has tight pulse height distributions (less than 40 percent FWHM) for UV radiation and displays low (less than 0.2 cnt/sq cm-s) dark background counting rates. Work that has been done on EUV filters in relation to the envisaged filter and photocathode complement is also described.

Neogene Caribbean plate rotation and associated Central American tectonic evolution

A theoretical model of the opening of the Cayman Trough is developed on the basis of geological evidence from a wide area. It is proposed that strike slip motion began about 30 Myr ago and proceeded at a rate of 37 + or - 6 mm/yr for a total of 1100 km of relative plate displacement, and that Central America Underwent an anticlockwise rotation with internal plate deformation. Maps of the reconstructed motion are provided.

Generic Karman-Rostovstev plate equations in an affine space

The Karman-Rostovstev plate equations are affinely transformed into equations that depend on the generic plate constants generalized rigidity, generalized extensional rigidity, and generalized Poisson ratio associated with the well-known linearized orthotropic plate/slab equations. Furthermore, since the generalized extensional rigidity is a function of generalized rigidity and generalized Poisson ratio only, with generalized Poisson ratio being a weak parameter, the only fundamental constant is generalized rigidity. This means that regardless of what analysis technique is used, the results can be cast in terms of only one strong material parameter (whose range is from zero to one). The affine stretching is performed on the dependent variables as well as the independent variables, so that the dependence of all quantities of interest on generalized rigidity and generalized Poisson ratio are easily calculated (e.g., even auxiliary quantities such as stress, strain, all weighted stress resultants, etc.). Some typical results (static side load response, collapse load limited by rib buckling) are presented by modifying an approximate technique due to Donnell (1976).

Stresses around holes in pin-loaded orthotropic plates

The effects of pin elasticity, pin/hole friction, and pin/hole clearance on the stresses around a hole in a pin-loaded orthotropic plate were studied. The problem was modeled as a planar problem, the pin and plate being two elastic bodies interacting through contact. Complex variable elasticity, a collocation scheme to enforce the pin/hole boundary conditions, and an iteration procedure to find the contact, slip, and no-slip regions were used to obtain numerical results. The results indicate that pin elasticity is not as important a variable as friction and clearance are. A rigid pin assumption, as opposed to the popular cosinusoidal radial traction, can be used without much error but clearance and friction should not be ignored.

Large deflection, large amplitude vibrations and random response of symmetrically laminated rectangular plates

An analytical method is presented for determining large-deflection static bending, large-amplitude free and forced vibrations, and large-amplitude random response of a clamped, symmetrically laminated, rectangular, thin plate subjected to a uniformly distributed transverse loading. Both movable and immovable inplane boundary conditions are considered. Numerical results for bending deflections and strains, frequency ratios, mean-square center deflections and mean-square maximum strains are presented showing the parametric effects of plate length-to-width ratio, orientation of layers, and intensities of applied force for both the linear and nonlinear cases. The analytical results for large-deflection random response are verified through comparison with experimental data.

Dynamic analysis of laminated plates using a higher-order theory

This paper deals with the dynamic analog of the higher-order shear deformation plate theory developed by the senior author. The theory is based on a displacement field in which the inplane displacements are expanded as cubic functions of the thicknes coordinate and the transverse deflection is assumed to be constant through the thickness. The additional dependent unkowns introduced with the quadratic and cubic terms of the thickness coordinate are eliminated by requiring the transverse shear stresses to vanish on the bounding planes of the plate. The theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stresses, and hence no shear correction coefficients are required.

Supersonic separated flow past a cylindrical obstacle on a flat plate

An experimental investigation of three-dimensional boundary-layer separation on a flat plate ahead of a circular cylinder at Mach 2.36 was made. Emphasis was given to the laminar flow regime and to the flow region upstream of the cylinder. The heights and diameters of the cylinders used in the study were larger than the undisturbed boundary-layer thickness at the cylinder location. Data were obtained by oil flow visualization, Schlieren observations, static pressure measurements, and laser anemometry. Oil flow visualization revealed three separation lines on the flat plate ahead of the cylinder. A postulated flowfield structure, which was suggested by this skin-friction pattern, could not be confirmed by the velocity measurements. Velocity measurements indicated an unsteady flow structure.

Flat plate heat transfer for laminar transition and turbulent boundary layers using a shock tube

Heat transfer results are presented for laminar, transition, and turbulent boundary layers for a Mach number of 0.12 with gas temperatures of 425 K and 1000 K over a flat plate at room temperature. The measurements were made in air for a Reynolds number range of 600 to 6 million. The heat transfer measurements were conducted in a 70-ft long, 4 in. diameter shock tube. Reflecting wedges were used to reflect the incident shock wave to produce a flow Mach number of 0.12 behind the reflected shock wave. Thin film platinum heat gages were mounted on the plate surface to measure the local heat flux. The laminar results for gas temperatures of 425 K to 1000 K agree well with theory. The turbulent results are also close to incompressible theory, with the 1000 K flow case being slightly higher. The transition results lie between the laminar and turbulent predictions.

A mixed shear flexible finite element for the analysis of laminated plates

A mixed shear flexible finite element based on the Hencky-Mindlin type shear deformation theory of laminated plates is presented and their behavior in bending is investigated. The element consists of three displacements, two rotations, and three moments as the generalized degrees of freedom per node. The numerical convergence and accuracy characteristics of the element are investigated by comparing the finite element solutions with the exact solutions. The present study shows that reduced-order integration of the stiffness coefficients due to shear is necessary to obtain accurate results for thin plates.

A buckling analysis for rectangular orthotropic plates with centrally located cutouts

An analysis to obtain the buckling loads of a rectangular orthotropic plate with a centrally located cutout is described. Cutout shapes can be elliptical, circular, rectangular, or square. The boundary conditions considered in the analysis are simply supported unloaded edges and either clamped or simply supported loaded edges. The plate is loaded in uniaxial compression by either uniform edge displacement or uniform edge stress. A computer program that implements this analysis is described, and the program use is demonstrated by sample problems.

Stress waves in an isotropic elastic plate excited by a circular transducer

Steady state harmonic stress waves in an isotropic elastic plate excited on one face by a circular transducer are analyzed theoretically. The transmitting transducer transforms an electrical voltage into a uniform normal stress at the top of the plate. To solve the boundary value problem, the radiation into a half-space is considered. The receiving transducer produces an electrical voltage proportional to the average spatially integrated normal stress over its face due to an incident wave. A numerical procedure is given to evaluate the frequency response at a receiving point due to a multiply reflected wave in the near field. Its stability and convergence are discussed. Parameterization plots which determine the particular wave whose frequency response has maximum magnitude compared with other multiple reflected waves are given for a range of values of dimensionless parameters. The effects of changes in the values of the parameters are discussed.
