This is the mechanical testing data archive from a neutron irradiation campaign of nuclear structural alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP). Data in this archive include uniaxial tensile testing data, fractography of selected tensile bars, and nanoindentation. The irradiation campaign was designed to facilitate a direct comparison of PM-HIP to conventional casting or forging. Five common nuclear structural alloys were included in the campaign: 316L stainless steel, SA508 pressure vessel steel, Grade 91 ferritic steel, and Ni-base alloys 625 and 690. Irradiations were carried out in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to target doses of 1 and 3 displacements per atom (dpa) at target temperatures of 300ºC and 400ºC through the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) project 15-8242.

A Preliminary Theoretical Study of the Expansion Tube, a New Device for Producing High-Enthalpy Short-Duration Hypersonic Gas Flows

A preliminary theoretical study was conducted of a new technique for producing high-enthalpy gas flows. The device considered utilizes an unsteady expansion process for the purpose of total-enthalpy multiplication. Analyses were conducted for both perfect and real air in equilibrium, assuming idealized diaphragm bursts, centered expansion waves, and continuum flow. Results of the study showed the expansion tube capable of outperforming the conventional shock tunnel by a factor of approximately 2 in velocity for the same test-section ambient density and pressure. The degree of dissociation is low at all phases of the thermodynamic cycle in the expansion tube; thus the test-section air has a good possibility of being in equilibrium. Maximum pressures involved in the cycle for duplicating a typical reentry from, a lunar mission are low enough for existing pressure-vessel techniques. Both the known and anticipated advantages and disadvantages of this new concept are also discussed.

Lightweight door seals cryogenic container against diaphragm type loading

Lightweight, removable, sealed joint access door for a spherical or semispherical pressure vessel containing cryogenic materials uses a joint overlock design to take the shear and moment loads. Oversize bolt holes are used so that the attaching bolts are in tension only.

Pressure seal ring may be effective over wide temperature range

Positive pressure seal rings seal bolted flange joints in pressure vessels containing fluids whose temperatures can vary over a wide range. The seal rings mate with grooves in the flanges and compensate for the excessive thermal expansion or contraction of a gasketed joint.

Susceptibility of irradiated steels to hydrogen embrittlement

Investigation determined whether irradiated pressure-vessel steels 4340 and 212-B are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement and to catastrophic failure. Hydrogen-charging conditions which completely embrittled 4340 steel had negligible effect on 212-B steel in tensile and delayed-failure tests.

Adhesive for cryogenic temperature applications

Adhesive, which bonds a metal liner to a filament wound composite structure used for cryogenic pressure vessels, prevents the metal liner from buckling under depressurization. The adhesive consists of adducts of urethane and epoxy resins.

Flaw Growth of 6Al-4V Titanium in a Freon TF Environment

The plane strain threshold stress intensity and sustained stress flaw growth rates were experimentally determined for 6AI-4V S.T.A. titanium forging and weldments in environments of Freon TF at room temperature. Sustained load tests of surface flawed specimens were conducted with the experimental approach based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. It was concluded that sustained stress flaw growth rates, in conjunction with threshold stress intensities, can be used in assessing the service life of pressure vessels.
