Hybrid Oscillator-Qubit Quantum Processors: Instruction Set Architectures, Abstract Machine Models, and Applications

This tutorial offers a pedagogical guide to hybrid quantum processors that integrate discrete-variable (DV) qubits and continuous-variable (CV) oscillators. Aimed at computer scientists, engineers, and physicists, it provides an overview of the experimental, algorithmic, and architectural aspects of this novel and rapidly developing hardware model. Experimental realizations of this model include superconducting, trapped-ion, and neutral-atom platforms. By combining DV and CV components, hybrid oscillator-qubit processors enable a powerful new paradigm that offers complementary strengths for quantum control, error correction, computation, and simulation. Working toward the goal of a full-stack system connecting applications to CV-DV hardware, we define and formulate abstract machine models and instruction set architectures. These essential abstractions enable codesign of hardware and software, and resource estimation for exploring the potential of current and future hardware for computational and simulation tasks. Using these abstractions, we present both new and existing examples that illustrate the benefits of hybrid CV-DV processors relative to traditional DV-only hardware in computation as well as quantum simulation of physical models. Examples include algorithms for transferring states between DV and CV systems, performing the quantum Fourier transform, and simulation of lattice gauge theories. Relative to qubit-only hardware, the bosonic degrees of freedom natively available in hybrid architectures can substantially reduce the circuit complexity of simulations for physical models containing bosons. A key technique is the extension of quantum signal processing ideas to CV-DV systems. This work is intended to serve as a timely and comprehensive guide to this relatively unexplored yet promising approach to quantum computation and to provide a road map to guide future development.

Testing the dark side of neutrino oscillations with the solar neutrino fog at dark matter experiments

The recent detection of the solar neutrino background at dark matter direct detection experiments paves the way to fully explore an important degeneracy in neutrino oscillations in the presence of new interactions, named the LMA-Dark degeneracy. This degeneracy makes it impossible to determine the neutrino mass ordering in oscillation experiments if neutrinos have new vectorial interactions with matter. As the composition of solar neutrinos at the Earth consists of all three neutrino flavors, testing the presence of new neutrino interactions in the muon and tau neutrino sector in scatterings can fully probe the LMA-Dark region for the first time. In this paper we show that current data from XENONnT and PandaX-4T do not yet exclude the LMA-Dark region with equal couplings of a new mediator to muon and tau neutrinos and quarks, and we identify the possible experimental scenarios to do so in the future. We also show that dark matter experiments can distinguish new interactions in the muon or tau sector only from new interactions affecting both sectors.

Coupling neutrino oscillations and simulations of core-collapse supernovae

At the present time even the most sophisticated, multidimensional simulations of core-collapse supernovae do not (self-consistently) include neutrino flavor transformation. This physics is missing despite the importance of neutrinos in the core-collapse explosion paradigm. Because of this dependence, any flavor transformation that occurs in the region between the protoneutron star and the shock could result in major effects upon the dynamics of the explosion. Here, we present the first hydrodynamic core-collapse supernova simulation which simultaneously includes flavor transformation of the free-streaming neutrinos in the neutrino transport. These oscillation calculations are dynamically updated and evolve self-consistently alongside the hydrodynamics. Using a M = 20 M ⊙ progenitor, we find that while the oscillations have an effect on the neutrino emission and the heating rates, flavor transformation alone does not lead to a successful explosion of this progenitor in spherical symmetry.

Dynamical phase transitions in models of collective neutrino oscillations

Collective neutrino oscillations can potentially play an important role in transporting lepton flavor in astrophysical scenarios where the neutrino density is large, typical examples are the early universe and supernova explosions. It has been argued in the past that simple models of the neutrino Hamiltonian designed to describe forward scattering can support substantial flavor evolution on very short timescales t ≈ log(N) / (G Fρν ), with N the number of neutrinos, G F the Fermi constant and ρ ν the neutrino density. This finding is in tension with results for similar but exactly solvable models for which t ≈ √N/(G Fρν ) instead. In this work we provide a coherent explanation of this tension in terms of dynamical phase transitions (DPT) and study the possible impact that a DPT could have in more realistic models of neutrino oscillations and their mean-field approximation.

Impact of the equation of state on f - and p - mode oscillations of neutron stars

We investigate the impact of the neutron-star matter equation of state on the f- and p1-mode oscillations of neutron stars obtained within the Cowling approximation and linearized general relativity. The f- and p 1 -mode oscillation frequencies, and their damping times are calculated using representative sets of Skyrme Hartree-Fock and relativistic mean-field models, all of which reproduce nuclear systematics and support 2M ⊙ neutron stars. Our study shows strong correlations between the frequencies of f- and p 1 -modes and their damping times with the pressure of β-equilibrated matter at densities equal to or slightly higher than the nuclear saturation density ρ 0 . Such correlations are found to be almost independent of the composition of the stars. The frequency of the p 1 -mode of 1.4M ⊙ star is strongly correlated with the slope of the symmetry energy L 0 and β-equilibrated pressure at density ρ 0 . Compared to GR calculations, the error in the Cowling approximation for the f-mode is about 30% for neutron stars of low mass, whereas it decreases with increasing mass. Here, the accuracy of the p 1 -mode is better than 15% for neutron stars of maximum mass, and improves for lower masses and higher number of radial nodes. I.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillation analysis with neutron tagging and an expanded fiducial volume in Super-Kamiokande I–V

We present a measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters with the Super-Kamiokande detector using atmospheric neutrinos from the complete pure-water SK I–V (April 1996–July 2020) dataset, including events from an expanded fiducial volume. The dataset corresponds to 6511.3 live days and an exposure of 484.2 kiloton-years. Measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters Δ⁢𝑚$^2_{3⁢2}$, sin 2 ⁡𝜃 2⁢3 , sin 2⁡ 𝜃 1⁢3 , 𝛿 CP , and the preference for the neutrino mass ordering are presented with atmospheric neutrino data alone, and with constraints on sin 2 ⁡𝜃 1⁢3 from reactor neutrino experiments. Our analysis including constraints on sin 2 ⁡𝜃 1⁢3 favors the normal mass ordering at the 92.3% level.

Nonlinear oscillator-based grid-forming converters offer superior dynamic and steady-state performance, making them an attractive solution for interconnecting renewable resources. This paper proposes a novel modified Andronov-Hopf oscillator to enhance the operating spectrum and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. An inner loop controller based on the Lyapunov energy function is implemented to achieve robust stability and performance, while a virtual cable emulation strategy enables seamless parallel operation. Comprehensive modeling and simulation studies validate the effectiveness of the proposed system, demonstrating its capabilities in addressing diverse operating scenarios, including grid faults, renewable energy fluctuations, and parallel operation. The proposed solution exhibits fast transient response, robust stability, and flexible operation, making it a valuable contribution to the field of renewable energy integration. The results of this study can be used to inform the design and implementation of next-generation grid-forming converters, enabling a more sustainable and reliable energy future. Additionally, the proposed system's ability to operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes makes it an ideal candidate for remote and off-grid renewable energy applications. The proposed solution's scalability and modularity also make it suitable for large-scale renewable energy integration. The proposed system is verified through MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness in ensuring robust and efficient operation.

A Data-Driven Exploration of the Impact of Renewable Energy on Inter-Area Oscillations in the U.S. Eastern Interconnection

As increasing amounts of renewable energy (RE) resources are incorporated into the bulk-power grid, power system oscillations are expected to change. This work investigates how RE generation impacts the frequency and damping ratio (DR) of two dominant inter-area modes in the U.S. Eastern Interconnection (EI) using regularly updated estimates collected over a 12-month period. Quantile regression is used to derive the correlation between operating conditions and mode properties, and a bootstrap method is used to quantify the uncertainty associated with the correlation estimates. Results show that with an increase in system load, the frequency of a mode decreases and DR increases. Evidence that increasing RE generation results in an increase in frequency and decline in DR was found for one of the two modes studied. This work shows that increasing RE levels will impact the properties of inter-area oscillations in the EI, but it does not indicate the presence of immediate threats to grid stability. The outlined approach can be used to periodically assess changing mode properties as RE levels continue to grow and flag stability concerns before they become serious reliability threats.

Nonlinear Virtual Inertia Control of WTGs for Enhancing Primary Frequency Response and Suppressing Drivetrain Torsional Oscillations

Virtual inertia controllers (VICs) for wind turbine generators (WTGs) have been recently developed to compensate the reduction of inertia in power systems. However, VICs can induce drivetrain torsional oscillations of WTGs. This paper addresses this issue and develops a novel nonlinear VIC based on objective holographic feedback theory and the definition of a completely controllable system of Brunovsky type. Simulation results under various scenarios demonstrate that the proposed technique outperforms existing VICs in terms of enhancement of system frequency nadir, suppression of WTG drivetrain torsional oscillations, fast and smooth recovery of WTG rotor speed to the original maximum power point (MPP) before the disturbance as well as preventing secondary frequency dip caused by traditional VIC. The proposed technique is also able to adaptively coordinate multiple WTGs to enhance the frequency support and the dynamic performance of each WTG.

Inter-IBR Oscillation Modes

This research addresses the following question: For a weak grid with multiple-IBRs, what is the nature of oscillation modes? The analysis of a system consisting of two identical IBRs offers a glimpse of the picture. It shows that the system has a weak-grid mode and an inter-IBR mode. For the weak-grid mode, two IBRs work as an aggregated one to interact with the grid. Furthermore, this mode is sensitive to IBR exporting power level and grid strength. For the inter-IBR mode, two IBRs oscillate against each other. This mode is less sensitive to grid strength and power level.

Real-World Subsynchronous Oscillation Events in Power Grids with High Penetrations of Inverter-Based Resources

This paper presents a survey of real-world sub-synchronous oscillation events associated with inverter-based resources (IBR) over the past decade. The focus is on those oscillations in the subsynchronous frequency range known to be influenced by power grid characteristics, e.g., series compensation or low system strength. A brief overview of the historical events is presented followed by detailed descriptions of a series of events. This paper also examines causation mechanisms and proposes future research directions to meet grid needs worldwide.

Geometric adiabatic angle in anisotropic oscillators

We discuss a classical anisotropic oscillator and the Foucault pendulum as examples illustrating non-conservation of action variables in integrable classical mechanical systems with adiabatically slow evolution. We also emphasize the importance of the mass parameter of a harmonic oscillator, alongside its frequency, in explicitly time-dependent situations.

Megawatt pulses from an all-fiber and self-starting femtosecond oscillator

Mamyshev oscillators produce high-performance pulses, but technical and practical issues render them unsuitable for widespread use. Here we present a Mamyshev oscillator with several key design features that enable self-starting operation and unprecedented performance and simplicity from an all-fiber laser. The laser generates 110 nJ pulses that compress to 40 fs and 80 nJ with a grating pair. The pulse energy and duration are both the best achieved by a femtosecond all-fiber laser to date, to our knowledge, and the resulting peak power of 1.5 MW is 20 times higher than that of prior all-fiber, self-starting lasers. Finally, the simplicity of the design, ease of use, and pulse performance make this laser an attractive tool for practical applications.

First Digit Oscillations

The frequency of the first digits of numbers drawn from an exponential probability density oscillate around the Benford frequencies. Analysis, simulations and empirical evidence show that datasets must have at least 10,000 entries for these oscillations to emerge from finite-sample noise. Anecdotal evidence from population data is provided.

General Quantum Field Theory of Flavor Mixing and Oscillations

We review the canonical transformation in quantum physics known as the Bogoliubov transformation and present its application to the general theory of quantum field mixing and oscillations with an arbitrary number of mixed particles with either boson or fermion statistics. The mixing relations for quantum states are derived directly from the definition of mixing for quantum fields and the unitary inequivalence of the Fock space of energy and flavor eigenstates is shown by a straightforward algebraic method. The time dynamics of the interacting fields is then explicitly solved and the flavor oscillation formulas are derived in a unified general formulation with emphasis on antiparticle content and effect introduced by nontrivial flavor vacuum.

On the stability of oscillations of an airplane wing

During a flight with a Van Berkel W. B. seaplane it was observed that the wing could perform violent oscillations. A theoretical and experimental investigation led to the conclusion, that in some cases an unstable oscillation of the wing-aileron system under the influence of the elastic and aerodynamic forces is possible without further external causes.
